I thought I'd start a new thread because I don't want to spoil the pleasure of the monarchists or let the thread turn into a slanging match.

What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

Depending on the weather we may do some jobs in the garden and sit in the sun, go out to somewhere miles away from TVs and celebrations, or visit the empty shops. Tbh I'd sit in a dark room for the whole day if it was the only way to avoid the expensive farce.

I am not obsessed with celebrity . The thought of yet another election ? No thank you

volver3 Tue 11-Apr-23 11:50:07

The coverage of the church visit this weekend included:

Prince Louis wore a tie!
They're all in blue.
The Princess of Wales had a manicure.

Obsessing with celebrity, definitely.

King Charles will be a great king. We’re fortunate to have him. We’re having a street party and the road will be closed.
It’s a positive when all our neighbours will get together. Usually, sadly they ignore each other.
This will be a day of celebration and merriment.

I’m sad to read the anti words here.
This is a decent country (UK) Some of these ‘anti’ contributors maybe think what it would be like without the monarchy. We’d have been led with King equivalent- Tony Blair and even Boris. Wow that would have been the end!!! I know the monarchy is not voted in and for that we have continually. Just can’t imagine my country without the monarchy.

Nannapat1 Tue 11-Apr-23 12:22:38

Totally agree with you Lovelady!

mrsgreenfingers56 Tue 11-Apr-23 12:30:30

Getting up early and going off for a very long walk, take advantage of hopefully no traffic on the road. Couldn't bear to watch it, Queen Camilla indeed!

Trapped at home in my village, with no car and bus services cancelled, I can get an idea of what is going on from TV news digests. Charles 111 seems an inoffensive front person for the nation and much to be preferred to our recent Prime Ministers. Most of the day, I shall be reading, probably my favourite historical novels, and reflecting on the long journey from absolute to constitutional monarchs around the world. Charles 1 was a dangerously stubborn extremist and Charles 11 not much of an example to follow. Better a powerless monarch than a populist tyrant or an uneducated President.

Oddly enough, I do think what it would be like to have an elected Head of State, and unlike people who are fond of saying what a decent country we live in and then suggesting otherwise, I do think we could come up with a system that ensured decent, effective, accountable leadership.

Tony Blair and Boris Johnson did actually lead the country.

And guess what - they don't do it any more.

Because we have the choice. 🤦🏼‍♀️

It's like a contagious meme. Here it is again.

All our PMs actually fronted the country. They were the ones turning up at meetings that mattered. Other people could stand for election, not just ex-PMs. Rather than somebody inoffensive I'd want somebody effective.

volver3 Tue 11-Apr-23 12:44:44

Do people actually think the King is more important and affects the way the country is run, more than a Prime Minister?

Edith81 Tue 11-Apr-23 12:48:56

Gramerreto how condescending of you to be kind to us people who would watch the Coronation because we have such boring lives. Is that your take on everything you’re not interested in?

Tweedle24 Tue 11-Apr-23 12:49:26

boheminan

Found out yesterday the crowning bit's on Monday, not Saturday, so need to re-arrange long made plans that involve staunch royalists who'll be glued to giant telly watching it all. I can't be bothered with any of it, another waste of money.

Is that true? I have just looked online and could find no reference to it. Have I missed something?

Tweedle24 Tue 11-Apr-23 12:54:35

Riverwalk

For those who are monarchists and practising Christians do you have any conflicting emotions on the coronation ceremony itself?

Two adulterers are being 'anointed in holy oil' specially brought from Jerusalem, crowned in a solemn ceremony in the highest church in the land by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

I am a practising Christian and find the whole adultery thing very sad. However, Christianity is about forgiveness. Let’s not forget that. ‘Let he/she who is without sin, cast the first stone.’

Foxygloves Tue 11-Apr-23 12:56:25

Don't know what has given you this idea that it's on Monday..
This from the Royal website
The Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6thMay, 2023. The Service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. As previously announced, the Service will reflect the Monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry

There's a detailed programme for the whole weekend if you Google it.

honeyrose Tue 11-Apr-23 13:00:54

I’m not a massive Royalist, but I’ll watch it on tv for “historical value” as someone put it. It is going to be a slimmed down version compared to Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, I believe, but still a huge expense of course.

Lizzie44 Tue 11-Apr-23 13:05:00

What will I do on the day? Probably a good walk if the weather is nice. I certainly shan't be celebrating the Coronation. Such hypocrisy for Charles to say he wants "a scaled down" monarchy. I think the UK is the only European monarchy to make such a huge thing of a coronation. Bread and circuses yet again.

Coco51 Tue 11-Apr-23 13:05:33

Why bring it up at all if you don’t want to cause controversy?

volver3 Tue 11-Apr-23 13:12:29

Coco51 a recent poll showed that 50%-ish of the population aren't interested at all in the coronation.

So having a discussion about what people are going to do on the day is a perfectly valid thing to do. If people don't like it, don't read it.

mabon1 Tue 11-Apr-23 13:15:01

Not interested in Royalty,. Coronation total use of public funds.
They are a wealthy, entitled, privileged lot, use their own money for the pantomime.

widgeon3 Tue 11-Apr-23 13:33:42

Dad had bought a tv in the 50s and invited in a large number of his ancient aunts..... My mother laid on a lunch. This was probably to demonstrate to them that my father was not on his uppers as several of his relatives had suggested might be his end
My brother and I endured the hairy kisses from the great aunts. He then disappeared into the grey drizzle saying he was going to find a 'good merp-hole' ( for playing marbles) in the nearby school yard as on normal school days these were reserved very early in the morning
I do not know what my brother intends so many years later. If , however. anyone wants to escape by playing marbles, here in Hampshire I have a large box of the things.... neighbours will possibly escape to a street party and the whole road shows an excellent selection of '. merp-holes' which will possibly be free from traffic

In the 50s it was my job to help my mother serve the bearded aunts. This time I shall cook for myself and husband and keep the tv on, just in case we get some real majestic choral coronation music..... Zadok the Priest..... I was glad etc etc

Soniah Tue 11-Apr-23 13:39:08

I'm no Royalist but any excuse for a party, I'm running a tea on the Friday for 70 or so older people (actually some of them will be younger than me!) with the help of my WI and local Uke group who are providing live music, more celebrations in the Town with a street party and entertainment on the Sunday organised by others on our town events committee. We did a similar tea for the jubilee and it was very well received so hopefully this one will go as well

kwest Tue 11-Apr-23 13:40:42

How sad, this sounds like a form of inverted snobbery.
I was at an event recently with mostly older people and the youngest one there made some really inappropriate remarks without having the good sense to 'read the room'. The looks of disappointment and the atmosphere in the room which suddenly became joyless stayed with me. No one thought the younger person was witty or clever. Many people are looking forward to history being made and they want to enjoy the day without being cast as 'less than'.

Mrsgranny Tue 11-Apr-23 13:44:28

Some people will just get on with their days as normal, some will enjoy and take part in the festivities, some will completely ignore, some will take advantage of the extra bank holidays, some will use the opportunity to gather with family and or friends. I for one will spend time with friends and family and dip in and out of the reporting perhaps on catch up after all it is a historical moment in our lives, I wasn’t here for the last coronation and may not be here for the next. Either way I will enjoy my day. I really don’t understand those who spend so much energy winging and whining about something they have no interest in and intend to ignore - just ignore it and get on with your day.

cc Tue 11-Apr-23 13:48:42

We're getting together with our very local WhatsApp group, a couple of dozen people. One day we'll eat bacon sandwiches apparently and another day we'll sit in the sun with snacks and booze. Lots and lots of booze.
I doubt that we'll do much Coronation watching as few of us are dedicated monarchists, it's just a pretty good excuse for a bit of a party.
