I thought I'd start a new thread because I don't want to spoil the pleasure of the monarchists or let the thread turn into a slanging match.

What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

Depending on the weather we may do some jobs in the garden and sit in the sun, go out to somewhere miles away from TVs and celebrations, or visit the empty shops. Tbh I'd sit in a dark room for the whole day if it was the only way to avoid the expensive farce.

Although I did like the Queen I have no respect for the rest of our Royal family. Can someone tell me why we should bow and curtsey to these ordinary people? It belongs in the middle ages and has no place in 2023.
Charles and Camilla are disgusting people who used Diana for breeding an heir.
I will probably glance at the TV to see the parades. We could still keep parades without the RF though.
I am in favour of a Republic with an elected president and would vote for that if we're ever given the chance. But that's unlikely

Yes it’s just an excuse to get trollies and start drinking at 11 am for many.

Authoress Tue 11-Apr-23 14:00:32

I have a course that day - so there's a good 20-odd other people who won't be watching smile

Dee1012, sounds like a good plan , may do the same or take my book and choc into the garden.

Never watched a royal event in my life - take advantage of empty shops if it's raining or the empty roads to a garden if it's not.
We regularly share food/drink in our own and our neighbours gardens so don't need to have a royal event to encourage us.

Interesting articles in The Guardian last week on the cost of keeping and the breathtaking wealth of the royals.

I shall spend the day remembering Princess Diana.

Anniebach Tue 11-Apr-23 14:11:33

Wonder if the wives of the men she had affairs with will remember her too .

Some of these ‘anti’ contributors maybe think what it would be like without the monarchy. We’d have been led with King equivalent- Tony Blair and even Boris

Maybe look at the Republic of Ireland model or develop our own. We can have a Head of State that does not require us to keep their brothers, sisters, children, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents etc etc in luxury for all of their lives - even when they are a rank embarrassment to our country! Preferably with one home while they are in office and not passed onto their children.
Worth looking at the real money royals make from the taxpayers - and no, monarchy doesn't cost us pennies, nor do we get more in return than they give! As for being a 'model family', what a joke.

Because I don't want to risk tangling with evil stuff, I'll be sorting through things brought in a hurry from my old home to decide what to throw away, donate or sell. Otherwise, I'd be sitting with a voodoo doll each for Charles the Turd and his repulsive wife, and enjoying sticking pins in them.

stewaris Tue 11-Apr-23 14:31:13

My DH's nephew is being married the same day so we won't be watching. Although tbh I wouldn't be anyway as we gave up on TV many years ago.

knspol Tue 11-Apr-23 14:40:03

Definitely not a royalist but I'll be watching on the TV - it's an historic event and I won't be around for another one. Difficult to believe Camilla will be the queen considering the vitriol directed at her in the past.

StoneofDestiny Tue 11-Apr-23 14:41:55

Funny how non of us can keep our Will secret - but the royal family can. Heaven forbid we taxpayers who fund them find out their huge wealth and just how much they pass onto their family in secret. Utterly ridiculous.

Sawsage2 Tue 11-Apr-23 14:56:40

I might watch it for an hour or so.

Grandma70s Tue 11-Apr-23 15:06:55

Whenever people post about the RF’s “huge wealth” I feel the need to point out that they are nowhere near the richest people in the country.

I see the usual curmudgeon are out in force, making a virtue out of not watching anything to do with royalty and making nasty remarks about those who will be happy and proud to watch the coronation on 6 May.

Keffie12 Tue 11-Apr-23 15:18:39

The TV will be off, I shall be nowhere near anything to do with it. Once the Queen went that was it for me.

Republican numbers have really grown since the Queen passing.

I think I will leave it there on my feelings as I would not be polite

If people are lucky enough to be rich - good for them, as long as I am not forced to pay my taxes towards their upkeep or their relatives generation after generation.

You're not.

Check it out.

The RF is pretty rich though considering that through the generations they only do charitable work.

Anniel Tue 11-Apr-23 15:57:26

I am a monarchist and will watch the Coronation. From start to finish. It is our history and tradition. It costs but the Monarchy is an institution that brings so many tourists to Great Britain. I read the replies of the Republicans here, some are lefties others are SNP or just not interested. They are entitled to their view but I find them rather boring people and the thought of us being a Republic makes me shudder.

Who would be President? Jeremy Corbyn? Keir Starmer? The very thought of it appalls me.

Long live the King!!!!

Just imagine what

volver3 Tue 11-Apr-23 16:03:38

Aaaarrrrrgggggggh!!!!!

FannyCornforth Tue 11-Apr-23 16:05:57

🤦‍♀️

tictacnana Tue 11-Apr-23 16:14:48

I”ll d my best to miss it. It’s not so much him as her that I object to. He was always going to be king but she isn’t the queen. She’s something else entirely.

Lindy Tue 11-Apr-23 16:20:50

Me too Gillycats

volver3 Tue 11-Apr-23 16:24:32

Can I just point out, if the people who want to watch the coronation object to being told they have dull lives, those of us who don't want to watch the coronation object to being called boring curmudgeons.

Just saying.
