So far, I think that Varian's OP has served to show us how diverse we are. I doubt that there can be such a person than the 'typical' gran.

No I am not overly confident Fanny my first post was ripped to pieces and I admit to feeling physically assaulted (I posted something I had seen in the Daily Mail, which I now know is akin to one of Hogwarts three despicable curses)

If it wasn’t for dearest Anniebach I would have run for the metaphorical hills never to be seen again. 🤣🤣🤣

The fact that we are anonymous on this site means we can be honest. Each one of us has had a life and has a story to tell.

One of my very first posts was ripped to shreds but it didn’t put me off posting again. I was having a bit of a moan about inadequate facilities at an expensive holiday cottage - only to be told sternly that ‘roughing it’ was part of the fun of going on holiday.
Not to me - especially when I’ve paid ££££! Can’t even remember who it was now, but needless to say I wrote her off as not worth a moment of my headspace.

No one is. That is the joy of Gransnet. Its members include a wide range of women form those struggling to manage financially to those who are well off. From those who married the love of their life at 16 and the two of them remain devoted to each other 60 years later and those with much more checquered and varied romantic histories, unmarreid as well as married, those with children and grand children and those with neither.

Quite simply GN can be proud of the fact that it attracts such a diverse range of members and I have benfitted immensely from this diversity.

I think you’ve nailed it Fanny. And as Sarah says, don’t forget the ‘votes Labour,’ or Green, or Liberal Democrat! Anything but Tory really, although I think there are one or two Tory voters on here. Well about five I think.

Ah, no, you misunderstood my post - I think there are very few posters (as opposed to lurkers) who actually, actively vote Labour…….

I asked a fairly innocuous question about ironing tablecloths. That was soon after gn started so it wasn't all sweetness and light back then.

I have some Seasalt, read the Mail and The Times (and do the crossword) and mostly vote Tory unless there is an SDP candidate.

It seems like your post has been mis-construed varian - I didn't think you were being smug. Just recognising that some seem to have more than their fair share of mis-fortune.

And I don't believe there is a typical gransnetter either!

But perhaps most people wouldn't post about family misfortunes, ailments etc on the internet.

They come on here for a bit of light relief (😂😂😂)
Or to be shredded for reading the DM and voting Tory/Brexit/liking the monarchy/take your pick

I don't think there is a typical gransnetter, I think like other demographics in society, there are "tribes" about 8 or so I once read somewhere, but even then there will be nuances within one's selected "tribe" enough I imagine to float between more than one. Life is rarely black and white even in later years.

I'm another one who received a mauling at first. I made a joke about how much my family drank on Christmas Day. The drink police came out in force. I was questioned as to how much we drank, were there children present etc. When I said that I was joking, I was told that I should have included a 'wink' emoji if I was joking. I had no idea how to do that at that point.
Fortunately the support over the years has made me stay.

I meant to add I think the OP is a good pondoring point, to suggest it's smug is imo a misinterpretation, I read it as Varian counting her blessings, as we all know from reading various posts there are a whole gamut of tragic/difficult situations some posters have had to deal with.

I have never in my life been a member of a 'tribe', no matter how defined. I have always been the 'awkward' one, although never deliberately.

Having always been on the minority side of any argument, I learnt long ago to stick to my guns and ignore people who arr rude.

It does have the big advantage, that I am an excellent complainer because I am not easily imtimidated.

I read the DM. occasionally the DT, Observer and i - and vote Lib Demand and have never ever voted any other party.
