Street you live in, name of teacher, pet, etc

or maiden-name- NO, I would never ask of course, as this could be used for phishing and it would be too personal.

As Casdo says 'It’s of no use to scammers to know how old your parents were when they died because you aren’t revealing what the year of their death was so no information of use is given, but it is revealing to state the actual year of their birth surely?'

Will soon be deleted.

Just the usual pile on from the usual posters. Any excuse is good. Have asked for the thread to be deleted.

Unfortunately it comes across that way.
Sorry you want to get the thread taken down, I don't think you should. It's not offensive.

There will be a thread asking for mothers maiden name next

I suppose someone with a very twisted mind could look at the year born thread, and then match to answers here. That of course never crossed my mind as it is so so unlikely. But yes, with hindsight, it is a possibility.

An aggressive and unkind pile-on is much more likely though. So deleted soon.

Scammers have twisted minds, they are not nice.
No one has said anyone on GN has these characteristics. Protection is key.

I must be missing something here. It’s of no use to scammers to know how old your parents were when they died because you aren’t revealing what the year of their death was so no information of use is given, but it is revealing to state the actual year of their birth surely?

You're wrong there.
A poster gave the years their mum and dad were born on one thread. Add how old they were on this thread when they died and bingo I have the four figure number of their death which could be a PIN. They have innocently revealed what you said they haven't.

I didn’t say that though, I said revealing how old they were when they died is not useful to anybody. It’s the date of birth that’s useful, you can only use the age of death if you have other information as well, and it will still only be accurate potentially to within 3 years if you put the two things together, won’t it?

There are a lot of coulds and woulds in some of these posts.

I have no problem with your question, Fleur.

My dad was only 66.

My mam is still with us.

varian Tue 18-Apr-23 19:08:40

I do think that the age that our parents reached does affect us as we age.

The OP whose parents both lived well into their nineties is fortunate, She may have good genes ad

and have inherited their longevity.

I'm surprised no one is mentioning Scam Interceptors on BBC 1 yesterday evening.
Rav Wilding is hunting down the scammers plaguing our lives. Working with ethical hackers to hack into the fraudsters’ illegal call centres, Rav uses cutting-edge technology to monitor the scammers’ phone calls in an effort to stop victims losing out to real-time scams.
It showed the scammers can reconfigure the numbers in no time. If my dad was born in 1920 and died aged 60 it doesn't take a genius to get to the year within 3 if you like.

I don't for one minute think that you asked the question for anything other than innocent reasons. Unfortunately, having written articles where I had to interview internet safety and security experts, I'm only too aware of how seemingly innocent bits and pieces of information can be put together to pose a security risk. You genuinely can't be too careful. It's frighteningly easy to track someone down from just a few pieces of info they've posted on the internet. I've done it.

Yes. I am being kind because I don’t want any on GN scammed.

I've just been reflecting on how much younger my parents were when they died compared to my grandparents. I put it down to the fact my parents smoked cigarettes from their teens until the end.
It would be interesting to know how many smoke tobacco nowadays and how it's reflected in the age at death figures.

VioletSky Tue 18-Apr-23 19:37:47

Redhead56 Tue 18-Apr-23 19:45:27

Nannylovesshopping Tue 18-Apr-23 19:48:06

Very old, I’m hoping I’ve inherited the longevity genes!

Witzend Tue 18-Apr-23 19:58:32

I didn’t see it as scam material.

My father was 72, my mother 97.

nandad Tue 18-Apr-23 20:04:39

Both were 70.

This information will be of no use to scammers unless they can tie in my ip address with my maiden name and any other relevant information which will help them. Yes I have also been able to track people down with only a couple of bits of information about them but this wasn’t it.

GN have declined to delete as they believe there is no problem- and as GNetters have the obvious choice not to respond.
