Strangely, I was discussing something like this with my cleaning lady over coffee the other week.

She'd lost her mother at an early age and it was the anniversary of her death, so I let her talk about her mum a bit and reminisce about what little she remembered about her.

We then got round to discussing that even when your parents depart in 'natural' old age, it's still a huge emotional shock to the system - not the fact it's happened, but the realisation that you will never see them again.

And we then went on to talk about what age various people we knew had died, marvelling that some lived very long lives and that others were not so lucky.

So I didn't find anything sinister or questionable in the OP's question.

Are we living longer than our parents' generation, or is longevity declining?

The question doesn`t bother me.
Father 22, (RAF, WW2)
Mother 85.

Dickens, my dear Mum would have been 108 the day before I posted, and this is what made me wonder.

My Mum was just a couple of months past her 80th birthday - not bad considering when she was born, her parents were told they were very unlikely to raise her as she had something wrong with her heart and yes, she did eventually die from a heart attack. Dad was just a few months short of his 85th birthday, actually died from a fall from a hospital trolley resulting in broken neck - but did by then have lung cancer - which as he had smoked for the seventy plus years was not very surprising.

I was in my early forties when Mum died, and felt far too young to lose my Mum, was not quite 50 when I became an orphan.

There was a lady in my street who, at 97, was still walking her dog (using only one walking stick) - always beautifully turned out, every evening until she finally moved to a retirement home!

She was an amazing woman, and I still miss her ever day.

To be honest, some of the posts have been so unpleasant and truly hurtful. Quite shocking. I would have understood if I was a new and unknown poster. Sadly, 'nuff said.

My mother was 85, my father 92. As he was the younger of the two, he outlived her by 10 years and until his last short illness was living independently, cutting the grass, and still on the committees of several village organisations.

My father's family, a large one (11) are long lived and most have lived healthily to at least their late 80s and 4 of them into their 90s.

At 80 this year, I still have an aunt, 95 this year, living independently at home, although in the last few months she has had a couple of falls and now has a walker, and while she doesn't have dementia, her mind is also slowing down.

My mother was 67, she died less than two weeks after a cancer diagnosis, my father was 83, he also had cancer. In my early 40’s when my mother died I still miss her every day and was fortunate to have my father with all his quirks for many more years.

Mum 44, Dad 89. Mum died of cancer in 1967, it was ghastly, nobody talked about cancer in those days. Brother and I, mid teens, were devastated and Dad bereft. She’d always been there and then she wasn’t. I’m now older than my Gran was when Mum died and it does upset me to think about everything I’ve had in my life but Mum never had the chance. And seldom a day goes by without thoughts of them at some point.

Mum had a stroke at 65
Dad made 86 died unexpectedly from heart attack

Mum was a shock, Dad wouldn’t have wanted it any other way
