Following a discussion about a GNers friend who was off her food I wonder what you favourite poorly food was?
A few days ago I was felled by the onset of the worst sore throat I have ever had. My GP diagnosed a strep throat infection. For days even if I had wanted to eat I couldn't as my throat was just too sore. Even drinking water, which I did out of necessity was excruciating. ( I wondered if the accompanying headaches were part of the illness or caffeine withdrawal). Today I am feeling slightly more human so I have just reverted to my favourite childhood " poorly food". Two softly boiled eggs beaten up in a cup with butter and salt. It does have to be in a cup. I tried it in a bowl once and it just wasn't the same. It did take its toll on my throat, but I did enjoy it.
What is your favourite , go to, poorly food?

Toast and strawberry jam,it used to be my grans homemade Blackberry jelly.
When working I caught Shigella Dysentry and lived off flat high-calorie lemonade left to go flat with extra sugar for a fortnight. Like Sago, I've had Campylobacter and lived off the same then.

A plate of spinach with poached eggs on top always makes me feel good if I'm a bit under the weather. The eggs just to perk it up a bit - I could eat spinach all day, every day! My first meal after getting home from hospital when I'd had my tonsils out at age 6 was a plate of spinach with a bit of meat and other roast veg on a separate (much smaller) plate!

If I'm actually feeling nauseous, then just plain toast with tomato soup...

Buttered toast
Sausage sandwich
Marmite on toast...
Mint ice cream for a sore throat!

White crustless buttered toast.

Lucozade original (I suspect it tasted better from a tall glass
bottle wrapped in mysterious amber coloured film)

Bovril with dry toast.

Orange jelly

Chunky boneless cod steaks in a butter sauce (no veg)

original hot Ribena
Definitely NO tea until I’m better!😔

I have a raging mouth infection after a molar extraction at the moment and all I can eat is eggy bread. Used to love Lucozade and the yellow film when I was a child. Best thing about being ill.

Me too, anything with mince is going to make me feel better!

Thank you Blondiescot for the eggs-in-a-up info - might give that a try, poorly or not!

Oh @lizbethann55 the memories have just flooded back!!

My lovely late mum used to make me 'eggs in a cup' - two hard boiled eggs, that she used to chop up with a hefty spoonful of Heinz salad cream. It was divine. At Granny's it was always Heinz chicken soup with a freshly floured, buttered bap (until they changed the chicken soup recipe - then it just wasn't the same).

Nowadays my 'go to' is steamed white cabbage (or sweetheart) a big bowlful sometimes with a drizzle of mint sauce if my stomach can take it!

Chips & baked beans.

Tuna fish pie.

After 2 doses of Covid, my sense of taste was affected, and many of the things I used to eat happily just didn’t appeal. My husband kept buying stuff that could just be put in the over, like ready meals and pizza. Jacket potatoes with a salad and cheese would go down OK. I had to start leaving any food I couldn’t face.

It depends on what the illness is really, but I do remember as a 14 year old suffering with a very severe bout of tonsillitis whilst on holiday in Cornwall. I ate virtually nothing nothing for a week but my first meal of choice was a picnic on the beach with cornish pasties from the local bakery. I had just taken one bite when a seagull flew down and ripped the rest of it out of my hand. My siblings' pasties were completely untouched by the seagulls, luckily I had a lovely dad who went back to the bakery and got me another.

Marmite on toast cut into four squares with the crusts cut off!

Milest0ne Wed 03-May-23 12:14:55

Home made lemon curd on fresh bread or a poached egg. Unfortunately I have developed an intolerance to egg. So they are off the menu. grin

Heinz Cream of Chicken Soup (must be Heinz)
with
Lightly buttered toast (must be thin, ready-slice bread)

I’m another for boiled egg and soldiers. My lovely mum used to cut the crusts off the bread too. If I have an upset tummy it’s generally water until I feel I can eat, then it’s a bowl of porridge with hazelnut milk.

After reading the thread on what is your go to food when poorly, I’d just like to ask has anyone had a change in tastes after a bout of Covid? I’ve never really had a sweet tooth, always opting for the cheese board insteadof a sweet desert, but since Covid, I’m eating so much sweet stuff. I’ve gone off so many savoury foods. Love M&S trifle. 😋

Summerfly Wed 03-May-23 12:30:53

Oh dear, this was meant to be a new thread. I’m not quite sure how to do it though! 🫢

Boiled potatoes mashed up with Oxo gravy. My Nan always gave us this when we were poorly as children. Still does the trick today!

Boolya Wed 03-May-23 12:44:41

Hot lemonade and a slice of bread and butter and Bovril on top.

Poppyjo Wed 03-May-23 12:49:41

For me it has to be scrambled egg and my mums cure all, lucozade

inishowen Wed 03-May-23 12:53:27

When I was grieving after mum's sudden death I stopped eating. One day my aunt arrived with a flask of homemade veg soup. It did the trick. I felt loved again.

Riggie Wed 03-May-23 12:54:10

tidyskatemum

Heinz tomato soup, though you practically need a bank loan to buy a can now!

Mine too. Must be heinz!!

Magme Wed 03-May-23 12:58:40

Mine is Farley’s rusks. My sister was a baby when I first had them after an upset tummy and not eating. My mum said I’d get better quickly because they were full of vitamins. Now they are my go to, so long as there is someone to get them for me. I find them really comforting 😊

Durga Wed 03-May-23 13:08:14

Tea and toast with butter and honey

Jay21 Wed 03-May-23 13:08:18

Definitely 'dippy' eggs chopped up in a cup with soft toast soldiers
