What is your favourite poorly food?

Following a discussion about a GNers friend who was off her food I wonder what you favourite poorly food was?
A few days ago I was felled by the onset of the worst sore throat I have ever had. My GP diagnosed a strep throat infection. For days even if I had wanted to eat I couldn't as my throat was just too sore. Even drinking water, which I did out of necessity was excruciating. ( I wondered if the accompanying headaches were part of the illness or caffeine withdrawal). Today I am feeling slightly more human so I have just reverted to my favourite childhood " poorly food". Two softly boiled eggs beaten up in a cup with butter and salt. It does have to be in a cup. I tried it in a bowl once and it just wasn't the same. It did take its toll on my throat, but I did enjoy it.
What is your favourite , go to, poorly food?

My father used to suffer a lot with tonsillitis. He swore by 'pobs'.

This was white buttered bread broken or chopped up and put in a cup with sugar and hot milk. It had its own particular smell.

I don't know anyone else who has heard of it.

Baby rusks softened in warm milk! :-)

I think pobs are a north of England thing and I might have misremembered the butter. I don't think it had butter in it.

I also love eggs chopped up in a cup with butter. As others have said , it has to be in cup

I have PinkCosmos!! See my post upthread. The same thing, but we just called it bread and milk rather than pobs. I must admit though, I had forgotten that the bread was buttered.

My Mother's special meals for poorly children were either Heinz Cream of Tomato soup with a small mound of mashed potato in the centre of the bowl - strangely delicious - or steamed plaice with mashed potato and peas.

The idea of something really simple like a soft boiled egg, mashed potato and grated cheese sounds appealing to me if I'm a bit out of sorts but I must admit that if I'm feeling very poorly I don't feel like eating.

Got to be dippy eggs and toast soldiers.

I've been out of bed for 2 days after spending 5 in bed with nothing to eat, and the first thing I wanted was Heinz Tomato Soup. Best thing I've ever tasted, at least it felt like it at the time. Had some Heinz Chicken Soup yesterday, that was lovely but not so much as the tomato.

Yes Blondiescot I also knew that I must be poorly if I got Lucozade! Heinz Cream of Tomato soup is my ultimate’poorly food’ too

Bread and honey or, maybe even buttered toast with honey. Once, when I was down with a really vicious tropical tummy bug, I was advised by a local doctor who knew about these things not to eat fibre and avoid protein. So that time it was white bread and honey without butter.

Eggs in a cup & I remember my Mum giving us Bovril with potatoes in & apparently my husband’s Mum did that too.

Polly4t42 Wed 03-May-23 17:48:32

That’s mine also with hot buttered toast

Bazza Wed 03-May-23 18:02:35

Another one for Heinz tomato soup but with a splash of Worcestershire sauce to counteract the sweetness. Eggs in any form.

Tinned rice pud every time. So easy to swallow and very nourishing.

Lizbethann55 boiled egg chopped up with butter in a cup? Oh yes! My mother made it for me if I was poorly and it always made me better! And Yes! Definitely in a cup! It wouldn't work in any other way...

albertina Wed 03-May-23 19:25:34

Jam sandwiches ( soft white bread only please)

SachaMac Wed 03-May-23 19:41:42

A cup of tea with thick toasted white bread & marmite or an egg custard.

Thanks everyone for replying. It is such fun reading them all. What is very evident is how many of us revert to our childhood memories when we need comfort.
