I wonder what it said?

Indulging my Rightmove habit this morning, I came across a description of a house which said, 'Upon entering the house one is greeted by the lounge.....'.

What do you think it said - 'who the hell are you' springs to mind.

Well, hello.
Please remove your shoes. Thank you.

Did the lounge go on to ‘boast’ a log burner? I find properties almost always ‘boast’ things.

That's funny. Maybe the agents try different wording to make things more interesting from time to time. I too enjoy those property sites. When we sold our house I insisted on proof-reading the estate agent's details and found several spelling mistakes and omissions. I especially love the photos. Some people obviously make a huge effort in presenting their home well whereas others look simply dreadful. My pet hate is seeing a tea towel hanging from the cooker.

To be fair gsm, this house didn't 'boast' about anything being 'ripe for renovation and modernisation'.

It did have a very nice, old, stove of some sort in the voluble lounge.

Don't buy me, this estate agent has hugely overpriced me..

And, 'a louvred door grants access to an understairs cupboard'.

… but only if you know the password!

Ooh, I'm on a roll now.

Another house has glazed, double doors which flow to the sun room.

Wipe your feet on the way out!

I used to plan the property pages for several of our newspapers, which involved trawling local estate agents' websites for suitable properties. One agent in particular (north east England) was terrible - their photos were just awful. No-one had ever made an attempt to even tidy up the properties, with rubbish lying around everywhere - and in one notable instance, dirty knickers lying on the unmade bed!

Funnily enough we have just seen one of our previous houses houses which we bought as a new build and sold 25 years ago on Rightmove. The estate agents description is “needing a little TLC which is reflected in the low price” Nearly half a million pounds is not a low price for that house!
It looks as if nothing has been done to maintain or update the property since we sold it, apart from removing a very expensive fitted carpet in the living room and varnishing the floorboards! The photos are dreadful too. Needless to say it hasn’t sold and has been on the market for 7 months!

'Greeted by the lounge in floor length velveteen with maribou trim'.

Does anybody remember the property ads by Roy Brooks, the refreshingly honest London estate agent of the 1960’s?
His weekly advertisements in the Sunday Times and Observer became must-reads, predominately for their refreshing honesty in a profession not known, then as now, for its candour.
An example
Wanted: Someone with taste, means and a stomach strong enough to buy this erstwhile house of ill-repute in Pimlico. It is untouched by the 20th century as far as conveniences for even the basic human decencies are concerned. Although it reeks of damp or worse, the plaster is coming off the walls and daylight peeps through a hole in the roof, it is still habitable judging by the bed of rags, fag ends and empty bottles in one corner. Plenty of scope for the socially aspiring to express their decorative taste and get their abode in The Glossy, and nothing to stop them putting Westminster on their notepaper. Comprises 10 rather unpleasant rooms with slimy back yard

Who could resist indeed?

You've made me want to trawl the estate agent sites now.

Chulachuli Fri 09-Jun-23 11:41:44

“Sea peeps” gets me annoyed. Peeps at what??

00mam00 Fri 09-Jun-23 13:58:17

Wide angle interior photos are laughable. A small new build house near us looked huge on the estate agents site, but there is no way all those lovely spacious rooms would fit into that oversized garden shed. It took several years to sell.

TanaMa Fri 09-Jun-23 14:34:36

Hate seeing bathrooms and toilets whete the toilet lid is still up! Also suitcases etc on top of wardrobes!

Witzend Fri 09-Jun-23 14:41:59

Used to love Roy Brooks! Pity there’s nobody like him now.

4allweknow Fri 09-Jun-23 14:55:02

When selling a house the estate agent described the kitchen as having a lovely cosy nuke (neuk). Suppose if the gas cooker blew up had it may have seemed like a nuclear explosion. I had to correct him.

Staceyann Fri 09-Jun-23 15:00:03

Because of the word lounge, I think it would be a Terry Thomas ”Well, hello there…”

Bijou Fri 09-Jun-23 16:15:01

When the agent came to value our bungalow we said we had fifty trees in the garden he went out to count them. You are wrong he said. You have fifty one.
We sold privately in the end.
