Angela Rayner as Deputy Prime Minister God help us šŸ™

What do you think?

Oreo Sun 20-Aug-23 14:43:38

Louella12

I quite liked Boris as well, oreo

So no flaw in my thinking at all.

Very honest of you😁

Whitewavemark2 Sun 20-Aug-23 14:52:04

oreo Raynor was voted into that position by Labour Party members, but when Starmer becomes PM all that ceases and he is free entirely to choose his own cabinet.

Of course there will be pressure from all sides of the Labour Party, but given Starmer’s obvious strength of character evidenced by his work to date I think that you can be reliably content that he will only have who he thinks will aid the Labour government deliver a reforming government.

Louella12 Sun 20-Aug-23 14:55:57

Great response, Oreo!

Louella12 Sun 20-Aug-23 14:57:15

Do you really think Starmer has strength of character, Wwm2?

Interesting how we all see things differently

Casdon Sun 20-Aug-23 15:15:19

The snobbery on this thread reminds me of this from Yes Minister.

I think people are underestimating Starmer. He’s far from weak, and no longer in the circumstances where the Union choice is one of his prime concerns. He will appoint to what he thinks is the best fit. I can see Angela Rayner as Health Minister, I think she’d be good in that role.

Urmstongran Sun 20-Aug-23 15:24:27

Angela Rayner is passionate and feisty. Nowt wrong with that per se. However as a representative of the UK I’d prefer Yvette Cooper.

Remember Keir Starmer tried to demote her a couple of years back? She ended up not only staying put but with an extra portfolio! He’ll have to try harder next time if he wants to finagle her out of his Cabinet.

She used to flat share with .... (name momentarily escapes me) who was the darling of the Momentum crew. No one was more surprised than Angela I think when she herself won more votes.

I must look up the flat mate. I can picture her, short blonde bobbed hair tucked behind an ear, thick black ā€˜studious’ frames on her spex but her name escapes me .... back in a minute!

Louella12 Sun 20-Aug-23 15:26:11

I think it's a shame Andy Burnham isn't available. I think he'd have been a good Labour leader

But whatever one thinks of Keir, he's going to be the next PM

Hopefully he won't sideline the lines of Angela

It's Rebeca Long-Bailey who seems to have disappeared, or perhaps it's just that I haven't seen her.

I guess that she'll appeal to some of the snobs on here with her double barrelled name.

I don't need help, thank you Dinahmo

So, one minute he’s a nasty baddie because he gets rid of people that he doesn’t like and the next minute he isn’t a strong leader. Surely he can’t be both?

Maggiemaybe Sun 20-Aug-23 15:34:43

I attended a literature festival talk by Angela Rayner a few weeks ago. She came over as articulate, amusing, intelligent and honest, and had a standing ovation at the end from her very diverse audience. I could actually see her on the world stage - she would certainly hold her own.

What I think is that her rise is a testament to her character, determination and sheer hard work. She was brought up in poverty, which was even more acute when her father died young. She knows what it’s like to be at the bottom of the heap, and she has always had a strong desire to improve society for the sake of children now growing up as she did. It’s snobbish and shameful to sneer at her lack of formal education - her own mother couldn’t read or write, and she was herself working to support her own child from the age of 16. Under the circumstances she’s done brilliantly, and her story will be inspirational to children from similar backgrounds.

So what are her crimes then? Speaking Northern, vapeing and enjoying a drink with her friends on holiday? I can think of much, much worse behaviour from some of the upstanding Eton chaps many of you seem to prefer.

I've never said Keir is a nasty baddie getting rid of people, *Maybee70!

You must be thinking of someone else flowers

I don’t think that holds anymore! Two surnames often indicate an unmarried couple who just use both surnames.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 20-Aug-23 15:50:39

That’s the first thing I think when I see a young person with a double-barrelled name - they or their parents are unmarried.

No, it's her views on issues such as people being able to change sex which concern me.

Would she be pressurised and cave in to persuasive, vociferous groups without doing the necessary research to find out the true facts?

MadeInYorkshire Sun 20-Aug-23 16:08:35

Personally, I think that the only person that we could have TRUSTED would have been Corbyn!

He couldn't make his mind up whether he was for or against the EU!

I know Johnson couldn't either but he did spend a weekend pondering the pros and cons before jumping off the fence the wrong side.

I prefer Jess Phillips if the Labour Deputy Leader has to be a woman.

Here hear šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

One of the reasons people in senior positions get rid of people is because they perceive them as a threat.
Another is that some people aren’t afraid to point out that the emperor has no clothes.
That doesn’t make you a good leader. Sooner or later your going to be found out.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 20-Aug-23 16:52:14

The labour deputy prime minister doesn’t have to exist. Starmer does not have to appoint one.

John Prescott made a colourful DPM though.

Who has Starmer seen as a threat?
