Update on my post. Miraculously the home Mum is on the waiting list for rang today to say she can move in tomorrow. The hospital will be off my back and Mum will start her new life in a home which has a brilliant reputation. I am walking on air!

A rantette, Doodle, I love that!

Another minor rant on something which has annoyed me for some time (and about which I was reminded by an article in the Guardian by Adrian Chiles). It is (fanfare please) - TV programmes presented by historians who talk about historical happenings in the present tense. Why??? If it happened in the past we have a selection of past tenses to use to talk about it. It annoys me so much that I have given up on some programmes, which is a shame as they can otherwise be interesting. Am I alone?

I was just in Spain and saw a lot of notices plastered around that said

Tourists stay out, refugees welcome

Now, I’m afraid that would annoy me as a tourist, BlueBelle. In fact, I’m glad now that I’ll be spending my Euros somewhere else next month!

Just got back from a walk. Got chatting to some people with a dog when my partner was ahead of me with our dog. It made him very grumpy. Ever since I’ve known him he seems to get very irritated if people we chat to ( we chat to a lot of fellow dog walkers) want to speak to me more than him. He then sulked because I pointed out he’d let the dog run through a patch of what I felt was uneven ground; she runs so fast I’m always very careful that the terrain is safe. This has been ongoing for the twenty or so years I’ve known him….there’s a huge difference between being married to someone for many years and being in a relationship with someone….

I’m sorry but that doesn’t make sense to me. What good does it do to insult paying tourists? Surely local businesses depend on them?

Refugees can be welcomed and supported. It doesn’t need to be either or.

Maybee70 there is a difference between a DH and a partner it’s true.For me this means telling DP exactly how I feel and not walking on eggshells like I used to many years ago.

I did that tonight Oreo. I also said I’m fed up of him expecting me to be happy and jolly all the time and if I want to be miserable and grumpy I will be! We’ve been thrown together far too much over the past few years!

Thank you Maggiemaybe and Romola. It is like a weight lifted from my shoulders that I didn't even realise I was carrying. Now I'll have to find something else to be angry about.

Merlotgran I was told it s because the place is flooded with air b and bs and locals not able to buy any housing I m not sure of the full reason
also the poor behaviour the police were on the beach each day taking alcohol off sunbathers I m sure there must be other reasons too

Air B&Bs are a scourge in the UK too. There are several in my town, where house prices are high, and rentals thin on the ground. It's really difficult for young locals to live here, and of course the B&B visitors don't pay council tax. It's not really a tourist town, it's just a good place to stay to visit a range of local attractions, being near the coast and the country, so the Hometown economy doesn't benefit in the way that somewhere like Skegness might.

As I’ve just posted on another thread, why does someone new to GN post a question, get lots of advice, some good, some not so, but doesn’t reappear with any comments, a word of thanks, or a kiss my ar*e!

That's just silly.

I'm sure whoever put up those notices thought they were making a point but tourist hot-spots need tourists to survive - I can't believe that hotels and restaurants really want tourists to stay away.

Why oh why do we have this 'extremism', it doesn't help to deal with the problem at all.

Asylum seekers / refugees / immigrants arriving on the shores of Europe is a problem that needs level heads, compassion - and a joined-up plan.

I would personally just ignore the notices - they are irrational and futile. But some will possibly take offence and decide to go elsewhere. I can't see how that will benefit the businesses revolving around tourism.

Also, autocorrect is making me annoyed. It seems more determined than ever to change ‘well’ to we’ll’ and ‘ill ’ to ‘I’ll’ etc. it took me three attempts to write that sentence 😂😂, and it still went back and changed it again when I put the full stop! It’s infuriating- and yes, we need an edit button.

Please can I have a rant

We have issues with the structure of our home (40 years old) we had major cosmetic repairs and some external brick stitching five years ago. Now we have cracks in every room, some I can get my hand into, but according to the structural engineers who have been monitoring the house has settled so they want to come in and do all the internal repairs.

They will not answer my direct questions of what is causing this and why just repair without remedying the root cause.

All this has caused an increasing rift between DH and myself, I am so flipping grumpy and stressed and as much as I try I cannot get myself out of this huge cavern of frustration and anger.

I feel as though being over 60 has made my view and comments invisible to these bloody experts🤬🤬🤬

Technology! And the impotent FURY that you get when you don’t understand what to do , and there’s no one to ask for help!

georgesgran I think I know what you mean… we get invested in a thread and then the OP doesn’t respond or, maybe, issues have worsened and the OP hasn’t the energy🥹

My mother's partner is going through the same thing. 30 years ago he had the same problem and the insurance company did the same thing to him and he had the internal repairs done. Now he is making a claim again, they are trying to slide out of it saying he had subsidence all those years ago. so they are not liable. Unfortunately he cannot find the paperwork from 30 years ago so he has no proof that he argued with them and refused to sign to say that he accepted the work as a full and final settlement because he was adamant that it was subsidence when they said it wasn't. He is having a nervous breakdown over it.

The only thing I am grateful for is that we didn’t sign of the last claim and this is being treated as a continuation of that.

I cannot fault our insurance company, our contact is feeling as frustrated as I am.

Is it unreasonable to want to know what is causing the problem, and have that remedied before the cosmetics part? It’s a big house and every single room needs plastering, decorating and the majority of the floors need to come up, I am just at the end of my tether…

Bit miffed after putting my mobile phone in the wash funny enough it now doesn’t work and what I know about mobiles you can fit on a postage stamp !
