Ponchos

I was an avid knitter and crocheted too a craft I enjoyed as it was trendy in the late 70s. I made ponchos to go with long skirts that were in fashion at the time. It was mini skirts in summer maxi in winter.
My mum hated them saying they looked like the old women who sold fruit and veg on carts in Liverpool city centre.

Mum, when she was alive, God bless her, kept buying me ponchos because I was so overweight at 10 stone.. She thought they would hide my stomach. Now I have dental issues and am a shadow of my former self. Dare not step on the scales. Good news is I have finally faced up to the missing teeth and made an appointment today with a dentist who has been recommended.
As I have large breasts, wearing a poncho looks like a tent. Not for me. I prefer tight fitting clothes.

My very stylish DD bought me a pale pink and grey beauty about 10(?) years ago, and I know they were trendy then. I was so glad to find it still in my wardrobe when I broke my shoulder in lockdown and just couldn’t get a coat on - it served me well when I was sitting two metres away from one DC at a time in the local park in the snow. DH used to escort me up there to meet them, supporting me by the working elbow and carrying two fold down chairs. Happy days!

If they’re back in fashion, I’m delighted. And it’s not at all frumpy!

My mother crocheted me a pink and purple poncho in the seventies. I was delighted with it.
I have a couple of smart ones now, they are handy for this kind of weather, you know, warm and then chilly.
I wish I'd kept mam's though, so much love chrocheted into a poncho.

One of my d.i.l's wears them. She's far too smart and beautiful ever to be called frumpy. So judgemental, some people.

I have a lightweight cashmere one which is perfect for reading in bed these chillier nights, though I don’t actually sleep in it.

Which reminds me, I still have a crocheted shawl made by a friend's Mum in the early 70s, fashionable then and retro fashionable now.

However, perhaps wearing it at 20 something looked rather hippyish and on trend, wearing it at my age might look like an old woman trying to keep warm 😃

I still have it, carefully stored away.

I have a few. 2 have big roll-neck, and the other is more of a shawl type. I like the look for fall, but admit we get a lot of wind and rain here as well, so they don't get a lot of wear.

Actually the shawl was bought by accident. I was travelling on a ferry, was very chilly so bought if from the gift shop thinking it was a scarf. Not something I would normally have purchased, but it looks nice.

They’re just handy at transitional weather times - when it’s not cold enough for a coat, but a bit chilly

We certainly don't life in a city, or a trendy area, but I would say that these are quite common around here in the 25 - 45 age group.

I bought DD one a few years ago made from alpaca wool when she was living in a draughty flat. It kept her very warm.

I made two ponchos last winter from blankets that were cream one side and caramel the other and bound in cream. They proved very useful. I would not describe them as high fashion, but they were warm, comfortable and served their purpose. I first came across ponchos as a student when my flatmate who came from Mexico, who wore the one she had bought over with her all through the awful winter of 1963 when she was the only one of us who actually kept warm!

Nor here in all the rain.
Although they might be cosy on slightly chilly evenings indoors to save on the heating.

I was slightly alarmed when DS bought his DGF a poncho for her recent birthday. I have never got on with them though I did knit a brown(!!) shawl complete with fringes in the 60's which looked like a poncho when I was wearing it.... Good to see they are fashionable again for DS's sake. He does normally have pretty good taste..

My mum knitted me a lovely poncho when we came back to Britain after living in a hot country. It saw me through two pregnancies and I've no idea where it went to after that. Wish I'd held on to it!

The ones that I was admiring five or six years ago weren't frumpy either. Very stylish ☺

They are very 'in' at the moment, I knitted one for DD.
