Irritating email from Santander

We've both had emails from Santander saying they want to thank us for our loyalty. Oh good I thought, gift voucher possibly. But no, they just want to thank us. Then they asked how useful this email was. You can probably guess what I said

I too have been a customer since it was Girobank. When I first came to Manchester as a mature student there were no mainstream banks on the rough estate where I lived so I joined Girobank.

About 2 years ago someone hacked my Paypal business debit card and got access to one of my bank accounts because they were linked. Santander spotted it when they tried to draw funds and sent me one of those "was this you" messages. They sorted it out pretty quickly and Paypal refunded my money from the card. Needless to say I no longer have these cards linked.

What is so wrong with ‘thank you’

I agree, Anniebach, what’s wrong with them saying thank you? No need for gift vouchers, etc.

Poor old Santander - damned if they do and damned if they don’t. It’s just a way of showing that they appreciate your custom.
Often shops have a sign up saying ‘thank you for your custom or airlines say ‘we appreciate you have chosen us’.
Why the high horse ?

Because it's gimmicky nonsense.

All this "thank you for reaching out to us" and "thank you for choosing xyz" or "how was your experience with us today" and the exasperating, "your call is important to us".

Companies and organisations have made a virtue out of basic business practice.

What counts is how well they treat you when you have a problem or need to talk to them.

If these organisations really value your custom, they will employ more people to answer the 'phone - not fob you off with the tired old "we are experiencing a high volume of calls".

... or pass you around the company after you've pressed Option 1 or Option 2.

What they are doing is maximising their profits by cutting costs which means employing as few people as possible to deal with customer queries and enquiries. And then pretending that they value your custom by sending out a silly letter.

Anyway, they flatter themselves - most of our choices are based on cost, not brand name.

I got a £50 Shop voucher from RBS for renewing the household insurance. I did check if I could get it cheaper elsewhere before I renewed, but I don’t think they know that grin

Not at all. This is how companies are rated. What if there was no rating ? I look up companies all the time on different issues. With no rating I wouldn’t know if they were good or bad.
This feedback can be a benefit to us as well as companies.
