Breeding animals for money.

An acquaintance does this to pay for holidays. Quite unpleasant in my opinion.
Any thoughts?

The previous post has been reported SS512 not the thread.
Spam or advertising probably.

Thousands of strays? Really?

caknib Tue 30-Jan-24 07:43:18

Absolutely no sour grapes from me and no need to tell me to mind my own business.
This person has chosen to breed domestic animals to fund extras like holidays. As there are thousands of strays, this seems unfortunate. Animals can't say no,can they.
It seems an unkind way to behave.

Rest assured I will do my research before having the temerity to start a thread in future.
Thanks

I would doubt if anyone gets much of a holiday out of breeding cats, nobody gets a holiday out of breeding rare breeds of farm animals, they are so unproductive, eating far more than they are worth.

Fancy breeds of dogs is different, at £2000 and more there is big money to be made, point the finger at East European smuggling gangs who bring puppies into the UK. Or bring a pregnant bitch in then sell the pups, advertised locally, in my opinion ANYONE selling a dog should be registered.

This thread is very vague. This person the poster writes about could be breeding pedigree cats with a licence. The OP states they have never seen the conditions the cats live in.
The OP also said that she learnt second hand that the owner funded her holidays by selling these kittens. How does she/he know its true.
The thread started is based on gossip, and I think the person who started this thread should mind her/his own business.

I know someone who responsibly breeds Bengal cats, they belongs to the official bodies and are registered.
Why not? Some people sell all sorts of things others might find offensive and fund their holidays, it’s one of the things people go to work for.
I sniff possible sour grapes with the little information we have.

I know someone who breeds dogs, very responsibly, and without her that particular breed of lovely dog might well die out.

I also know people who farm rare breeds of animals, keeping some ancient species going.
Of course, they sell them, buy in new stock to avoid interbreeding. It's called conservation.

Of course they have to make money, otherwise they wouldn't be able to continue.

Of course there are unscrupulous, irresponsible breeders and the authorities should clamp down on these people and shut them down.

However, it is a subject which is so diverse it cannot be described in such a sweeping, dismissive way.

And what happens to the queens when they are past breeding I wonder. It’s so irresponsible to bring more animals into the world when so many are homeless. I have only ever had strays and rescues and all have been spayed/neutered.

It’s a disgrace to use animals in this way to make money. There are so many unwanted cats - why do people buy them? I would be reporting her to the council for running a business from home, the RSPCA and HMRC.

And I would do exactly the same. I assume that this person's irresponsible behaviour means she dumps unwanted/unsold kittens into animal shelters when they are no longer "cute" and need food, inoculation and looking after?

Yes, it is.

The OP asks a perfectly reasonable question which doesn’t necessarily require additional information and which doesn’t make any claims to either believe or disbelieve.

I think she’d simply like opinions about making money from breeding animals.

That is a huge, wide-ranging and diverse subject.

^Does every post warrant forensic questioning I wonder.^

So you can’t back up your comments but expect us to believe every word. You’ve asked for our thoughts. I think you should mind your own business.

Yes, I'm wondering what is wrong with asking for more information about a rather vague OP posted by a new poster, who is asking Any thoughts? .

Any thoughts?
Plenty.

Apologies for any confusion....I know of multiple holidays through a second party. 'It's grim' referred to the general.

valdavi Mon 29-Jan-24 19:37:07

Well if she's an experienced and conscientious breeder & pays for veterinary attention whenever it is needed, I don't see what is wrong with that on the face of it. Most of us have holidays it's not like breeding cats to buy yourself a ferrari.Maybe she works part time in order to be able to do this.
I guess the way she's put this across to you makes you suspect that she's just in it for the money & thinks it's a good way to make a fast buck & may not put her animals' welfare first in which case I'd agree with you, nasty.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 29-Jan-24 19:30:24

As you said ‘it’s grim’ and that it funds ‘multiple’ holidays it was reasonable to assume you had some knowledge of conditions and numbers.

Dee1012 Mon 29-Jan-24 19:26:26

I'm pretty sure there's regulations via the local authority i.e council, not the RSPCA. I think it applies for 3 or more litters a year.
Likewise if she's breeding pedigree cats... could you have a look at the 'governing bodies'?

caknib Mon 29-Jan-24 19:26:20

How very odd some of the responses are. Quite clearly I know scant detail,as I made clear ,I am not talking about sheep or cows or a farm situation. I refer to an acquaintance who is breeding animals, selling them and using the money to fund holidays.
Since I have never set foot there,I can not comment on the living conditions of the queens and tomcat nor the frequency of litters.

Does every post warrant forensic questioning I wonder.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 29-Jan-24 19:11:28

Me too. And my opinion of people who buy animals.

JaneJudge Mon 29-Jan-24 18:33:15

I always change my opinion of people who breed their pets sad but I have only ever had rescues, even when my children were small. I remember my Mum saying a particular rescue dog we had was 'always very grateful' and she was.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 29-Jan-24 18:28:27

You said ‘it’s grim’ so you must know something of how many cats are involved and the conditions they are kept in. It is not recommended for a queen to have more than three litters in two years - if this person is having multiple holidays from the sales of kittens, either the recommendation is not being followed or there are several cats. The local authority can tell you if she’s registered or not.
