Mitch Benn, comedian, was the voice of Ask Elvis on Steve Wright in the afternoon.

Well I guess now #SteveWright is leaving the afternoon slot on Radio 2 I guess it’s finally ok to confirm that I WAS Elvis on the Ask Elvis slot for many years. Steve & I had decided never to admit to who it was doing the voice because it helped maintain the “illusion”.

I was so shocked. I love Steve Wright and always listened to his show in the afternoon when he was on radio 2. I stopped listening to radio 2 when they got rid of ken and replaced Steve with the cringingly awful Scott mills. Steve was a legend, one of the best. He will be sadly missed. My thoughts go out to his family. RIP Steve.

Oh how sad, I used to engage Steve to appear at Blazers in Devon when I ran it then, how sad, I am going back to early 70ish. He always did a very professional job even back then. Tony Blackburn was another of the DJs I used then.

Yes the BBC have a lot to answer to for axing his show & Ken Bruce! Load of crap now is radio 2

But maybe keep this in perspective? He was a well paid disc jockey. Well liked sure. Hugely popular - that’s a given. But at almost 70y maybe it was time to accept the plaudits, enjoy his reduced status and audience and put his focus on life in general a bit, well, elsewhere? He had his health, wealth, family.

Music dominated his life and yes, he was good at it. Highly knowledgeable. But it was time perhaps to move over for new blood. Admittedly not my taste but you get my drift. It’s a difficult industry to get a foot in the door and room has to be made to allow elbow room for upcoming presenters.

I just found it very sad that it seemed to be his ‘raison d'etre’.

That made me smile Kandinsky. Isn’t it a contradiction to say older DJs should make way for new talent, and then say you listen to Boom Radio, which is dedicated to old music and features no new talent at all?

Boom Radio isn’t for me, I like to hear new stuff too, and Radio 2 still has plenty of presenters I like. I don’t think whether you like presenters has anything to do with their age actually, it’s more about whether you warm to their personalities and presenting style.

Pity the BBC didn't realise how loved he was before axing his weekday afternoon shows - and the same for Ken Bruce and other experienced broadcasters that they tossed aside.

Johnnie Walker paid special tribute to Steve this afternoon in his Sounds of the Seventies show. Then he played Pilot of the Airwaves. Very moving.

Urmstongran. He didn’t have his health actually. His brother and a very close friend both say he was really unhealthy due to his poor lifestyle. Ate junk, hardly exercised, smoked cigars, was very overweight etc.

He had had a heart bypass op just after the BBC cut down his hours. The photos of him in recent years show what a size he had got to and on some it looks like he lost most of his teeth too.

I rarely caught the Sunday Love Song programme, as the timing wasn't right for me, but I loved the concept, that ordinary, everyday love, enjoyed by ordinary, everyday people ( not celebrities in Hello! magazine) was worth celebrating, and Steve Wright did it so well.
Speaking as a cynical ( my father called me Hard Hearted Hannah) long divorced woman, the broadcast gave me a lovely warm feeling. Good work, Mr Wright.

Haha Casdon - I agree we need to make way for new talent, but in the case of R2 they’re just replacing the over 60’s with 45- 50 year olds, so hardly ‘new talent’ - the replacements are never as good either!
I mean, is Zoe Ball better than Terry Wogan? ( I know Chris Evens replaced Terry but he wasn’t as good either ) I can’t even remember who replaced Steve Wright but I know he’s really annoying. As for Ken Bruce’s replacement…..just not for me.

Boom radio is great. Got all the DJ’s from my youth, Graham Dean, Nicky Horn. Great!
