Clearly the Republicans want him and clearly the blob is scared of him.

I predict he'll win bigly.

😁

I wasn’t really commenting on why asylum seekers want to come here, I just decided to look up what exactly they are entitled to, since there seem to be varied opinions on that, and I wanted the facts. For instance, I’ve regularly seen it claimed that asylum seekers get Ā£40 per week for expenses such as toiletries but they don’t, they only get that amount if they are living in accommodation without meals provided, and they have to buy food and other essentials from that amount. That’s why I looked it up. It’s all there on the Government website.

I know you were and I already know the answers myself. I've worked with a couple of refugee charities and met amazing, brave people. It's just irksome that people think you'd hang on for your life on the undercarriage of a train for such a pittance per week. Anyway, that's all I'll say on the matter. Thank you for posting itsmile

Of course I can understand the struggle if meals aren’t provided in the hotels but I was reminded of the queues for free dentistry and at food banks.

I also understood Julietthat if people aren’t even able to access NHS dentistry that it must be extremely annoying to realise that asylum seekers can access free dentistry. I’m lucky, I have an excellent NHS dentist, who moves between NHS and private care, which suits me.
Yes I do understand why people might be upset, but as I said, I was just setting out the provision for asylum seekers in the UK. I don’t know how it compared to other countries, but France doesn’t seem to do very well, judging by the camps near the coastline we see on the news regularly.

This is an interesting read......

That’s interesting, although not a surprise re Germany. I already knew that. Unfortunately the chart is rather dated, it’s 2018/19 and much has changed since then, in particular Covid. I’m not sure how that has impacted on immigration anywhere, and I’m not sure that Syrians are the biggest group anymore. Still interesting though.

Totally a disgrace if this vile, vulgar, racist, insane criminal gets into the White House.

He really is horrifying and cruel ..

I very much doubt that asylum seekers are the actual cause of people not being able to access NHS dental care, They are just used as an excuse for things that have been badly affected by ears of austerity cuts. Not helped by ā€˜ I run marathons, me’ Hunt being in charge of the NHS at one point.

I can't stand Trump.

What AlwaysSmiling was trying to get across, as was I, is that we would prefer Trump over Biden. Neither of us are talking about his policies re immigrants. We are entitled to our opinions even if you don’t understand them. I see another point of view having dealt with and befriended many Americans who are not from the north and New York. I don’t particularly like the man, he is deeply flawed but that is what is on offer just now.

But no real answer as to why Trump over Biden ? Because your American friends do ? That’s not an answer . Biden has a wealth of experience in politics that Trump does not have . Have you seen the recent news that the Trump administration was awash in medications like Xanax and even Ketamine . Prescribed by the Trump appointee physician . Explains a lot of the erratic behaviour of his administration .

I saw a Prigg ramen about 1) shortages of actual dentists, 2) Many dentists now only take private or insured patients.

The main reason was because of ongoing inadequate compensation/funding from the govt iro NHS patients. Little bit like the funded Nursery Schemes.

Ooops programme that should read!!!!

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 07-Mar-24 14:55:51

I was shocked to find that over a quarter of the money has provided for NHS dentistry in my area remains unspent.

More or less my POV. Seriously scary a a like him can be re-elected POTUS.

But the big question is - what's the appeal? I think in times of great difficulty people seek a sort of magical solution, the image rather than the reality of a strong leader who can lead them to the promised land.
So much so that the actual record of what they have been or done (documented by other posters above) is literally not believed especially in an age of social media.

History is littered with such (nearly all male) "Strong, confident, leaders" and some have been very, very dangerous indeed.

Ali08 Thu 07-Mar-24 20:09:15

Maybe he'll build a wall around the White House to keep us all out!
That would be lovely.

maddyone Thu 07-Mar-24 20:51:33

Nor did I say it was Maybee. I was actually simply setting out the position re the benefits asylum seekers are entitled to in the UK.
But in fairness, I can understand that some people (not myself as I have an NHS dentist) may feel aggrieved when they cannot access NHS dental care but see others able to access it. Surely you can see they may feel aggrieved about that?
The bigger picture is that this government have overseen this lack of access to NHS dentistry and I abhor it. The fault lies with this government entirely.

To get this thread back on track : here is a thought: Trump was a lifelong Democrat. When he decided to switch to Republican he was asked why . He said : because they are stupid enough to vote for me !
