Best fiver I spent recently šŸ™‚

After walking the Gdcs to 2 different schools, I had a 45 minute wait until their fantastic hardware shop* opened at 10.

I’m not a frequent user of coffee shops, but thought I’d nip into Costa and wait there. But there was a Greggs almost next door, which I’d never tried, so….

A perfectly nice coffee and a hot cheese and ham toastie (I’d had no breakfast) for a fiver! With a peaceful table to myself thrown in.
Safe to say I will definitely be doing that again!

*I just wish we had one of those anywhere near here! He has everything, and knows exactly where to find it.

I have never bought anything from Greggs much prefer to support independent shops and bakeries.

Juicylucy Fri 05-Apr-24 13:07:39

Have to love a Gregg’s sausage roll.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Apr-24 13:09:19

Ah, memories.
One of my first big arguments on gransnet was about Greggs sausage rolls. 🤭

We stock up on stotties too whenever we go north Purplepixie. I don't understand why they don't sell them all over the UK - there are people from the NE living all over the UK. Last time we went we came back with 12 stotties - 4 for us, 8 for other people grin

MissAdventure Fri 05-Apr-24 13:11:21

Are stotties the ones that have pease pudding inside?

MillieBoris Fri 05-Apr-24 13:42:29

Yes absolute ripoff prices in these chain coffee shops - I stood with my mouth open when I realised I was paying £4.40 for a flat white at Costa in Reading Service station on M4 recently. Nobody else in the queue turned a hair - just accepted it. Expect its increased even more by now.

Georgesgran Fri 05-Apr-24 13:49:29

A stottie is just a bread cake MissA - anything from 6inches wide, but less than 2inches thick. Sliced in half (horizontally) and filled with whatever you like.
Pease pudding - also known as Geordie hummus - and cooked ham is a winning combination.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Apr-24 13:57:15

That's it!
That's what I had when I was up that way.

Very nice it was, too.

Georgesgran Fri 05-Apr-24 13:57:16

Half a large stottie

Maggiemaybe Fri 05-Apr-24 13:59:36

I love a quick Greggs for lunch on the go, especially one of their chicken bakes. And I don’t feel a bit guilty for choosing it over the independent round the corner, where the pasties have way too much pastry and way too little filling and cost twice as much. Each to their own though - fortunately they both seem to be thriving.

Gin Fri 05-Apr-24 14:06:24

So am I with you Urms. We were out shopping where a branch has opened up so, never having had one, tried the sausage roll. I did not like the filling, a soft sludge not a sausage! Prefer the ones I make. Perhaps the veggie one would be better.

My Geordie DH is constantly saying the same as you, AreWeThereYet! I’m sure it would be a winner - after all, you don’t have to be a Geordie to like it!

Good job you didn’t choose Costa - Ā£3.65 just for a cappuccino!! šŸ™„

DevonshireSalop Fri 05-Apr-24 15:01:33

We’ve just lost the Greggs in our town. They are run as a franchise apparently.

JaneJudge Fri 05-Apr-24 15:17:10

I like their vegetable slices. You can buy them frozen in iceland though

hilz Fri 05-Apr-24 15:17:59

A few weeks ago I met up with 4 friends in Asda cafe. We all had an over 60 deal so soup and a buttered roll and endless teas and coffee all for a pound a head. Best fiver I spent in a long while and the soup was delicious too. Don' t think the offer is still going but will certainly check out other deals in the future Just as I have during the school hols at various eateries. Think I must be getting savvy in my old age. smile

Purplepixie

I used to live in the north east where Greggs started and they used to be much better back in the early days. The cheese and onion pasties are like sludge now. They do excellent stotties in the north east but sadly not in the East Midlands where I live so I buy a few on my visits and freeze them. I think the food is ok value for money but very very fattening. I could spend £5 in a better way. On wool!!! Haha!!!

Normally I don't go into Greggs, but one day, not too long ago I missed the bus. I had thirty minutes to wait and felt hungry. Greggs is close to the bus stop. I popped in and bought a cheese and onion pastie. After the second bite I put the pastie in the bin.
I think it was mashed potato in oily pastry. No resemblance to cheese and onion. Absolutely vile. Never again.

Around here in North Yorkshire we have a bakers called Thomas’s, they started in Helmsley but now have branches all over the area including York. Probably more expensive than Greggs but very good. Their award winning Yorkshire curd tarts especially. I have used Greggs the odd time but wasn’t keen.

Abitbarmy Fri 05-Apr-24 15:33:41

Actually just checked and Thomas the Baker shops are now in. Cleveland, South and West Yorkshire also. Highly recommend if you come across one.

Urmstongran Fri 05-Apr-24 15:42:32

I’m with you Aldom. A cheese and onion pasty would be my go-to so a couple of years ago I tried one. Eurgh! I binned it. Sludge indeed in oily pastry.

Lollin Fri 05-Apr-24 16:07:27

There are times when I struggle to choose independent over larger establishments now that they have to provide nutritional information. Greggs have improved their healthy options I see but the smell would always make resisting a sausage roll difficult so I have to avoid. I will relax and enjoy an ordinary coffee at an independent and okay yes possibly a bite to eat if I have someone to share the calories/fat/salt content with.

rafichagran Fri 05-Apr-24 16:14:53

I love a Greggs sausage roll with a Costa Coffee.

Primrose 58. Honestly I just can’t see the point of reporting the milk jug. Just tell the staff. Why are we not supporting each other just tell the counter staff. Milk turns very quickly. We all know that.
We all have to work and if we were all reported to ā€˜the authorities’ life would be miserable. Let’s help each other and be kind.

It hadn’t ā€œā€just turnedā€ it was so thick and congealed it looked like a yellowish plastic circle. it was horrid! I poked it with a spoon to make sure it wasn’t a plastic seal actually.

The shop was very busy and I would have had to go to the back of the queue to complain and I thought doing that would be even worse for them in front of customers.

Primrose53 Fri 05-Apr-24 16:47:28

Germanshepherdsmum

If the staff let the jug get into that state, LovelyLady, it’s obvious that they are not sufficiently aware of good food hygiene. What Primrose described isn’t down to milk ā€˜turning’, it’s down to lack of frequent cleaning. If the management were doing their job properly they would be teaching the staff about these things and carrying out regular inspections. If the jug’s like that, what’s going on behind the scenes? A visit from the environmental health department would be of far more use to the staff and their customers than a complaint to a member of staff. What’s all this ā€˜helping each other and being kind’? Would you say that if you had contracted a nasty bug due to poor food hygiene? Staff are paid to do a job and should do it properly.

Thank you, exactly how I felt.

My husband was a Baker and we watched greggs put many a small bakery out of business, now they don't even do bread any more!
And this was after the supermarkets had there bash at them. Now we have Artisan bread rather over priced and usually to be found in farm shops.
