Sick of celebrities

I know some will say 'read a better class of newspaper' but the papers this morning may as well be renamed the Taylor Swift Diaries. I don't enjoy politics and like to read light hearted news but I'm sick of reading about the Beckhams flaunting their wealth, the Kardashians latest child, who's nepo baby is succeeding at what, etc 😠

Apparently Wanda played a recurring role as Cassandra Trotter's mother Pamela Parry in the sitcom Only Fools and Horses between 1989 and 1992.

I would never have the Daily Mail in my house. We take the Guardian and the I.

He’s a fine actor, but I think Benedict Cumberbunch is very strange looking.
Can’t think why he’s apparently a bit of a heart throb🤔

Our eldest daughter, the Yorkshire Lass, has the same POV as you LLFL. Hates it with a passion!

I happened to catch a few moments of Pointless Celebrities. The contestants showed themselves very ignorant.

Well it's a good job the two presenters, Armstrong and Osman, went to Cambridge then to make up the balance!

Primrose53 Mon 22-Apr-24 09:05:30

I realise some on here just want to have a go at the DM and try to prove how superior they are as they read other papers but TV is just as bad!

If I am ironing I put the TV on and most daytime progs feature celebs, most of whom I have never heard of or have no interest in. Same with chat shows in the evenings. Wall to wall celeb nonsense.

nanna8 Mon 22-Apr-24 09:29:23

Intellectual snobbery at its best ( or worst, depending on your POV). I think my Dad used to get the DM and he was a pretty smart cookie. Mind you, he was a staunch Conservative.

But I bet they're much wealthier than most of us!
And they are raising money for charity, although the BBC should be ashamed of the pittance they pay out on that show compared to others!

So you get a one-sided view then?

I look at both online. It's easy to avoid the celeb parts.

We have the DM on Saturdays for the TV programmes. And Monty Don 🙂

Blimey! I can’t believe I read that. How dreadfully snobbish.

I don’t know, is it more snobbish to say that than to say ‘I only ever read the Telegraph and the Mail’? It defines your beliefs, but I don’t think it’s actually snobbish.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 22-Apr-24 09:49:46

Saying you would never have the DM in your house is surely very snobbish and superior. Why not just say you don’t read it?

buffyfly9 Mon 22-Apr-24 09:51:05

I'm thoroughly fed up with "celebrities" doing travelogues around the country. What makes them so special that I need them to pass comment on a nice view, a walk through the countryside, a culinary tour on a weekend break. If they are chefs, fine, if not I'll make my own mind up.

Witzend Mon 22-Apr-24 09:57:23

Even The Times yesterday had Victoria Beckham plastered over the top of the front page.
I despair.

I just think we probably all feel like that about one publication or another.

The DM has been pushing their campaign on banning plastics since 2008. A victory for them today as the Govt have decided to do so in the autumn. Wet wipes being banned.

The Guardian is not to be left out 😂😂😂

I could go on (but I won't!)

New Scientist anyone?

polly123 Mon 22-Apr-24 12:38:46

Celebrities are absolutely boring and irrelevant. It is hard to believe that people buy items on the strength of their endorsement. I avoid any papers or magazines with a celebrity focus and also chat shows where they are usually selling some awful book they haven't actually written themselves. This does not apply to those with a genuine talent who have something to say worth listening to.

Mojack26 Mon 22-Apr-24 12:49:31

Don't read newspapers, never have....detest celeb culture and reality shows!

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 22-Apr-24 12:51:30

If you have never read newspapers, do you follow what’s going on in the country and the world? If so, where do you get your information?

Grantanow Mon 22-Apr-24 12:56:03

Many celebs have PR teams to keep them in the press and lazy journalists mop up their handouts. Celebs need to stay in the public eye to make money from endorsements, influencing and selling their records, t-shirts, memoires, etc. It's just business as usual, nothing personal. Failed politicians do it too.

Babamaman Mon 22-Apr-24 13:20:37

Totally fed up with this obsession with celeb culture! And then those from stupid non celeb reality shows become tv/radio presenters? Travel show presenters?
All fake teeth & tans ?
Where are the ‘real’ presenters?

I'm not sure that's something to be proud of - the not reading newspapers part.
