What were the first ever records that you bought and when?

My brother and I passed the 11 plus within one year of each other and our parents bought us a record player between us . The first record I bought was 54321 by Manfred Mann , can’t remember what my brother bought .

I didn’t have a record player of my own until I left home. Before that I used my parents’ massive radiogram, and a large mahogany gramophone which lived in the dining room and was largely mine.

As far as I remember it was Cliff,s 'The Young Ones' from the film. I then went on to buy all of his records.I was smitten! My first ever crush!☺

Simon and Garfunkles Wednesday Morning 3AM ,when I was 12 in 1966 swiftly followed by Parsley Sage Rosemary and Time the same year all because our music teacher was a fan and introduced them to us in class I believe the album was a rerelease as it hadn't been popular a couple of years earlier .I still have the albums and still occasionally play them .I had my first part time job at 12 so was able to buy books and music I liked .I also got a reel to reel tape recorder for my birthday that year and we had great fun with it as well as recording records so we didn't have to keep changing them .

All you lucky people who were given record players…I had a Dansette too but had to work in a fruit and veg shop every Saturday for months before I had enough to pay for it.
As for my first record, it was Stranger in the Shore by Acker Bilk. I was 13.

Mid fifties: The Dam Busters, Elvis Presley's Rip It Up, and Paddy Robert's EP which included The Belle of Barking Creek.

Grandmadinosaur, Grocer Jack (Excerpt From A Teenage Opera) was by Keith West. I remember my little sister singing it as a toddler, except she sang "Boser Dack" instead!

The wide range of choices is interesting and shows the wide age range of GNers. Those of you buying in the 60s had a much wider choice of pop/rock music than those of us born in the late 40s. I remember listening to Childrens' Favourites and Two Way Family Favourites for the occasional rock and roll record that would be played. There were no other popular music programmes. When I was a teenager my parents bought me a tranny and I listened to Luxemburg under the bedclothes. Then one day my Father came home from work and told me about Radio Caroline which started broadcasting in 1964.

We are so lucky with the variety of channels available to us.

I also had a Dansette player for Christmas, I think I was 12. With my Christmas money I bought Obladi Oblada by the Beatles and played it on repeat for hours.
My brother about 3 years previously was given a Dansette as well and I remember hearing Go Now by the Moody Blues for hours on end.

The first LP I bought was Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd. I never bought singles only albums.
I still have a few but nothing to play them on now.

In the mid ‘70s, Silver, our Boss let us have a radio on in the office. Every time Stranger on the Shore was played, the Transport Manager would leap to his feet and waltz ‘Beryl’ an older lady around the room. It was almost a daily event- brings back memories.

I think my older brother bought me my first record and I think it was Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Cliff Richard - Move It bought with my 12th birthday money. It was the first of many 45s that formed my record collection which was mostly made up of Cliff, Everly Brothers, Adam Faith, Billy Fury et al until the Beatles and Stones took over.

I couldn’t afford to buy LPs until I earned money from holiday jobs but I’ll always remember the first ones were Manfred Mann (when they were a blues band) and Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames.

What memories this post has brought back! I too used to listen to my transistor under the blankets. My first purchase was a Cliff Richard "EP" (extended play if I remember right). It was many years ago obviously and the only song I remember was "Shrine on the second floor). I played it over and over driving my parents mad but I was an only child and was let off over many things and we all liked music and shared the radiogram. Mother with "crooners", father with traditional Scottish music and me with anything I could get my hands on. My first LP was Roy Orbison and I still have it along with my Beatles LPs and EPs,

Very first record was Daydream Believer by The Monkees. Think l was about ten or eleven. Played on my Dansette record player. Happy days.

My first record was Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire. It was a protest song released in 1965 when I was 13. I must have played it over and over because I still remember all the lyrics.

The first record I bought was Do You Mind by Anthony Newley in about 1960. My father worked for EMI and he brought home a 78rpm (!) of Elvis singing Blue Suede Shoes and a demo disc of Cliff singing Theme For A Dream.

I don't remember the first single I bought but the first LP was The Animals probably around 1965 when I started my Saturday job. I even remember the record shop in Norwich, near Castle Meadow, opposite British Home Stores.

In 1958 I bought Michael Holliday's record of " The Story of my Life " . I think that was the only popular music record I bought as I discovered classical music after that .

Yes, it was this - I’ve still got all my records, they are more evocative than photographs.
