Scared of the motorway

Hi all
I'm 62 and a driver of over 30 years. I'm confident and able but have an irrational fear of driving on the motorway. Due to the rail strike I've now agreed to drive to visit family in the south (I'm in the northconfused) which is a drive of about 6 hours on my own. My partner can't come due to looking after our dog who we can't take. I'm already nervous and anxious. The problem I have is fear of taking the wrong exit or slip road or not merging lanes in time and losing my way. I'm embarrassed by this fear but really want to conquer it. Any words of wisdom for me? blush

When I first visited London and surrounding region years ago, we had a rental car and had to drive a bit (husband was on a working trip), but he knew the road system well from previous trips, so we arrived back home safe and sound.

It was my very first exposure to roundabouts… OMG… how horrid are these?? My eyeballs were completely spinning 😵‍💫. Not to mention being on the wrong side of the road 😆. I hated them! Got back to the US and wouldn’t you know a few years later, we had roundabouts being installed. Hrmph!

They claim it’s a safer form of transiting through intersections. Really? The way people drive (fast) these days, I’m not convinced. I hate them. (I already said that.)

Stick to the speed limit but don’t go so slow that you are a hazard on the road. Don’t grip the wheel so hard that your knuckles are white - once you relax, driving becomes more enjoyable. I do like to cruise around.
Be careful!

I am your age and regularly drive 200 miles on the A1 ( much preferred to M1) sharing driving with my husband but would not like to do this journey driving on my own. When I have travelled this journey alone I have gone by train, much more relaxing. Have you checked a route by train?

I don’t mind driving on the motorway, but really don’t like getting on and off.

I prefer driving on motorways or dual carriage ways. It is quite relaxing compared with ordinary roads.

I've been driving since I was 17 and am now over the 75 mark. I loathe driving now - so many boy racers about who can't wait 2 secs. I have to drive to pilates every week along a dual carriageway and keep to the left and breathe a sigh of relief when I can get on a side road. I sometimes take a country route which is quite pleasant though can be busy with - lorries!! There is no way I would drive long distance now though DH does and I sit there with my eyes shut!!!! So far so good wink
