Small Babies With Headbands

Why do some mothers insist on putting bands around their babies’ little heads? To add insult to injury, the bands invariably have a big bow on them! Am I the only one who thinks they look utterly ridiculous?
I’m not a miserable old fuddy daddy and have no problem with pretty much all other baby fashions but I hate the look of this!

GrandmaMia1 Sun 19-May-24 09:02:06

They put them on their babies because they like them and think they are cute. Each to our own.

Joseann Sun 19-May-24 08:47:32

Of course it's just a comment MissInterpreted, as is mine.

MissInterpreted Sun 19-May-24 08:14:44

Oh come on, it's just a comment? Surely babies can look 'plain' (or worse), just as some adults do? I'm sure every mother thinks their baby is beautiful, but others are allowed to think differently.

Joseann Sun 19-May-24 06:32:46

very plain little things is the quote.

Joseann Sun 19-May-24 06:31:54

I agree VenusDeVillendorf with your sentiments.
Posters can say the headbands themselves look silly or whatever, but to say the babies wearing them are plain looking themselves was unkind.

NanKate Sun 19-May-24 06:20:29

I think they look daft and naff but it’s the fashion.

I remember in the 60s when the fashion was for baggy sweaters and I persuaded my dad to give one of his sweaters. I must have looked awful like a beatnik but I was thrilled.

I don’t think any baby looks ridiculous no matter what their parents or GP puts on them. Babies are lovely little humans.

I think it shows that they are loved actually, and that they are clothed, and are fed and clean.

GSM- I think Sharon’s having a lend 🤣 To each his own, some of my grandchildren have Tatts, I think they’re awful but, hey, different generation.

Emilymaria - this is a lighthearted thread. Crossstitchfan can choose to chat about it.

You don't need to join in if you only want to talk about serious things - but
I think we do need some ordinary chat now and again.

Many of us adults have had our ears pierced and we know how much it hurts! My own earpearcing was really painful...poor children! It is abuse and dangerous imo.

Loobyloo12 Sat 18-May-24 23:11:27

Also, even more hilarious!

Loobyloo12 Sat 18-May-24 23:09:38

Hilarious!! Much sillier than headbands imo

brownbunny17 Sat 18-May-24 20:31:58

I agree with Crosstitchfan.
I think they look ridiculous. Stupid idea.

6 months or 10 years,
Still a child.

I loathe headbands on babies. I also dislike jeans on small babies - look so uncomfortable. Also ear piercing - a form of child abuse in my opinion. Surely a parent can wait until the child can understand what is going to happen. I once watched a little girl screaming her head off in Claire’s Accessories. She looked to be about 3. My pedicure person won’t pierce children's’ ears until they are at least 10 and she asks to see them briefly without their parent to ensure they understand what is going to happen and how they have to look after the wounds.

I don't like them for the same reason I don't like tiny baby boys in bow-ties or any of the other accoutrements of the adult world of fashion, show-biz, etc. They are infants and children for such a short while and should be free of those 'trappings' to wriggle, kick, crawl, roll etc, until they begin to show an interest in such features and objects. Not to mention the danger of suffocation from such items, or choking if they put them in their mouth.

Maybe I have a too 'romanticised' view of infancy and childhood, I'll admit. However, these trends are to satisfy the parents I believe, nothing else. No baby girl without hair is bothered by the fact of not yet having much of it and little boys barely able to walk aren't the least bit interested in looking cute for our benefit in a bow-tie. It might be 'fun' for a photo-session, but apart from that it would be nice if babies could just be and look like whatever they look like. For a while in their infancy, it won't even matter whether they're boys or girls. Not to them, anyway. A contented baby smiling at you from a pram or buggy is a delight, regardless of which sex they are.

I love to see babies wearing headbands with bows.
Not while they're sleeping though.
I got my daughters ears pierced when she was about 2 years old and my younger son got 1 ear pierced when he was around 5.
At 40 he still wears a stud in that ear.

I found this post appalling.

@Summerlove
You’re right when you say headbands etc are better than pierced ears. Why would anyone have a tiny baby’s ears pierced? To my mind, that’s abuse! The mind boggles!

I completely agree

I don't like the headbands on babies either. If baby has not much hair , I think she looks like an easter egg. However it's up to the mum to dress her baby in whatever she likes. My daughters were born when angel tops and tights were the fashion

4allweknow Sat 18-May-24 18:18:16

I do not like them. Isn't there a known risk to breathing if the ridiculous bow falls onto the baby's face.

Ilovedogs22 Sat 18-May-24 17:55:53

Some parents are lemmings & have no ideas or flair of their own! Most of the little girls I have seen wearing (dangerous) headbands are often unfortunately very plain little things alas. 🤔

Boz Sat 18-May-24 17:54:59

I was told I kicked off in a pram at 8 mths old when a bonnet with elastic chin strap was placed on me. I was the only child my mother ever had because of my bad behaviour. I dragged off dresses with tight necks and threw soft toys across the bedroom, hating their intrusion.

Smileless2012 Sat 18-May-24 17:32:59

Sometimes circumcision is needed for medical reasons which of course is entirely different.

I don't think parents have the right to pierce their child's ears !!!! The ears belong to the child not the parent - it is boardering on assault! Why not wait till the child is old enough to want their ears pierced and old enough to consent y the procedure.

Do you feel the same about circumcision? (Just to be clear, I think neither that nor ear-piercing are acceptable)

Yes, I feel the same about both.
