Do you dislike wearing makeup as I do?

I don't wear makeup these days, I dislike the feeling of it on my face. I did allow makeup to be applied in the past when I appeared on TV programmes and films, however when I did some filming more recently I refuse to have it applied.

Some women put so much of it on it certainly doesn't improve their looks, and could damage their skin.

I wear makeup when I go out. I don’t over apply though. A bit of concealer, then a powder foundation, and a bit of blusher. A little eyeshadow and mascara and a slick of a natural colour lipgloss completes my look. It improves me in my opinion. I look better with it than without.

I like makeup at present using Number 7 from Boots but go for a natural look. There is nothing more aging than too much plastered on as we get older. Their new sun repair damage serum is brilliant and over time really does start to smooth out lines. I always use a good facial sun cream like La Roche posay which is not thick or greasy.

Sorry Yongy but I love my makeup and wear it every day, whether I’m staying in or going out. I honestly don’t think anyone has seen me without makeup in living memory!
Less is more, I’ve got it down to a fine art and don’t come downstairs in the morning until my face is on - it only takes a few minutes. I’ve told the DDs I’ll come back and haunt them if I’m not wearing eye liner and mascara in my box!

I have never worn foundation. I don’t like the feeling of it, nor the appearance. It can look really awful on an older, lined face but so many older ladies really plaster it on. I use a face primer which gives a soft finish and blurs lines and pores. I wear taupe eyeshadow and grey eye pencil every day and tinted lip balm, perhaps a touch of concealer under my eyes if I’m looking tired. Maybe a little mascara too if I’m going out, but not too much. I agree with Tiley, as we age less is definitely more.

I wear make up every day. It's part of me taking hold of my day and feeling in control.
It's pretty muted, most people don't notice - but if I'm unwell (cold, covid etc) I don't put it on then and I get loads of sympathy for how rough I'm looking.

I too wear a little make-up everyday. I always use a good moisturiser then a tinted moisturiser, mascara, eyebrow pencil, and blusher. If I remember I put a little colour on my lips. For special occasions a very light eye shadow.

I like a bit of make up. It cheers me up and makes me feel better about myself. But it's quite subtle and you would hardly know I am wearing any.

I agree that as we age, less is more. That’s why I don’t over apply. A little concealer around my spots of age discolouration does help though, and the powder foundation by Laura Geller, not too much, evens out my skin tone and contains brightners which lift and even out the skin tones. I find powder foundation much less heavy than liquid foundation and you really don’t feel it on your skin. Unlike liquid foundations.

Moisturiser and lipstick, nothing else. I sometimes apply a tinted Moisturiser in summer.

MayBee70 Thu 30-May-24 10:05:22

Having not worn much make up throughout the pandemic, when I did apply the sort of make up that I’d always worn I looked ridiculous. My eyes stream when I put mascara on, my eyelids now hang over my eyes. Foundation just seems to sit on my face. I can’t see what I’m doing even if I use a magnifying mirror. My eyebrows have completely disappeared! I bought lots of make up aimed at older women but it still looks awful.I’m looking to find some cream eye shadow as powder just makes the skin sag even more! My eyes are like sunken hollows!

I use E45 cream as a moisturiser on my face and the rest of my body after my early morning shower. It seems to work very well, and some people when they ask my age are surprised that I am only 6 years off 80. One kind person said they thought I was in my late 50s!

Lovetopaint037 Thu 30-May-24 10:26:31

As I have aged my use of make up as decreased to a bit of light coloured lipstick, a little moisturiser from time to time and powder on my nose. Lately I have been using nothing. I have this feeling that my skin should be allowed to breathe. What I have done for many years is wash in Aqueous Cream.

JaneJudge Thu 30-May-24 10:30:05

I wear a bit (not a lot) as it gives me a bit more confidence
isn't that sad?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 30-May-24 10:31:22

Totally depends on my mood, if I have a light tan and feel happy moisturiser is all I use.

If I am feeling down (having what I call an ugly day ) then its tinted moisturiser, taupe eyeliner, brown mascara, taupe eyeshadow (just a light brush over), a light sweep of blusher and natural lip tint.

Witzend Thu 30-May-24 10:31:32

I don’t wear foundation, I never have. I hate the feel of it. Just moisturiser, a little eye make up (or my eyes disappear), lipstick and blusher, though that last is more usually a dab of lippy, rubbed in.
But I rarely go out without those basics.

hollysteers Thu 30-May-24 10:32:54

I’m a big fan of the wonders makeup creates. I don’t agree that less is more, if you know what you are doing. I’m “no eyes” without my eye makeup and I love a smoky eye. As a singer, it’s been part of my performing life, so I’m a dab hand at it.
If more women knew how to apply it, they would see how much better they could look. I feel sorry for men who don’t usually take advantage of it (some do!).
I also draw and paint, so painting my face is just an extension of that😁

MiniMoon Thu 30-May-24 10:36:14

I don't wear make-up. I'm allergic to most of it. All I put o my face is a daily moisturiser.

Casdon Thu 30-May-24 10:39:47

I like it. I’m never seen without at least tinted moisturiser and lipstick. I like eye make up too, but I can’t wear it in the summer if the sun is shining due to hayfever, I’m always rubbing my eyes.

LisaAN Thu 30-May-24 10:46:42

I have not worn it since I was about 18.

TerriBull Thu 30-May-24 10:48:20

Much more minimal make up these days, less is more as women get older imo, anyone remember Barbara Cartland, face that looked as if it had been dipped in a bag of flour, electric blue eyeshadow and false eyelashes into her '90s, an inspiration of how not to look shock I certainly wore far more in my working days which would always include foundation. Then I read a question and answer article with Shakira Caine on makeup when she remarked that she never wore foundation "it only goes in creases as you get older" I think she's right, I haven't worn it for ages now. I moisturise, pay attention to my eyebrows, I think they give that eye area some definition, particularly as they have become more sparse as I've got older. How I envy the perfect arched eyebrow. I also put some highlighter on my brow underneath, I don't bother with mascara too often maybe for a special occasion. I like lipsticks and lip gloss, I have quite a few.

RosiesMaw Thu 30-May-24 10:52:32

Contrary to the notion that it damages your skin, given that most foundations (all?) contain some SPF , even just a smidge of foundation helps to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays. Lippy also protects your lips.
I actually like tinted sunscreen (factor50) instead of a tinted moisturiser in summer.
Not removing it properly is where the damage can occur- blocked pores etc. But again, proper removal will also gently exfoliate and get rid of dead cells.

Pantglas2 Thu 30-May-24 10:52:56

I generally have one day a week at home with no makeup just moisturiser and always wear some if going out.

I find that tinted moisturisers are brilliant without feeling heavy and have enough coverage for me. Add eyeliner and cheek n lip colour, I’m sorted. I dye my own lashes and brows every month as my silver/gunmetal hair means I’d look washed out t’other wise.

Calendargirl Thu 30-May-24 10:58:59

Sitting here reading this with my unmade-up face, as per usual.

I go to aquacise five times a week, some there have make up on, but seems a bit pointless.

I would probably look better with some, but never bother.
