Sad news - It looks like Michael Moseley has been found

I was very sad to hear about Michael Mosley this morning. I couldn't really understand how it happened. I thought he was just coming off the beach and returning to where they were staying and took a wrong turning. Fron the pictures though it looked a rough terrain and hazardous.

I cried when I heard the news yet he is not a relative. RIP Michael. So very very sad.

Some years ago my husband took our grandson for a coastal walk in his buggy. Grandson took off his hat and threw it towards the rocks. Instead of leaving the hat hubby slithered down the rocks to get it. By the way leaving a toddler in his buggy. Luckily there weren't any mishaps but a split second wrong decision could have meant disaster. I'm just reminded of this today.

He appears to have been on a bit of an 'adventure' walk, and from what his family say, they appear to be taking some small comfort from the fact he was doing something he enjoyed.

As for the mobile 'phone matter - it may or may not have made a difference if he'd had it with him.

Many of us carry them automatically, but you can't go through life living on the razor's edge every time you leave the house or do something spontaneously.

Very sad for the whole family, but now the agony of "not knowing" is over.

I'm not going to be speculating on why he decided to walk where he did or why he decided not to have his mobile with him. Sometimes we just do things because we want to.

Michael Mosley was one of those people who, one felt, one kind of knew through his broadcasts. He was prepared to show vulnerability but put a positive spin on life. I shall miss his presence on radio and TV.

This is happening much too often now, people going off trekking without the proper gear. All he had was a bag and an umbrella. It is sad but so much expense and police time taken up by looking for people who have not had the common sense to ensure they have the correct walking gear with them.

I see one of the searchers has been stretchered off in the heat.

Whatever happened, the poor man is dead. Taken from his family too soon, thoughts are with them. RIP

You have absolutely no idea if a mobile phone would have helped him in anyway.

True, but having a mobile with you gives those searching a better chance of finding you sooner, even after the battery runs out as your location prior to the battery going is still available. Absolutely heartbreaking. A needless loss of a well loved person. I’m so sad. RIP Dr Moseley.

People have taken risks since the dawn of time.

As humans we don't always compute these risks as we should when we decide to do something spontaneously. And I'm guessing that mostly, we get away with it.

And, even if he'd had the correct walking gear, he could still have had an accident.

I don't think this is the right time to blame the victim or castigate him for the time spent by the emergency services in their attempts to find him. These services will always exist - but they are really not called on that often considering the unknown number of risks - both calculated and unrecognised - that people take with their lives.

I had never given a thought to my mobile tracking where I had been.
However, I had a Google alert this morning, which showed all my locations for the month of May. Big brother is watching us indeed! .

I don't want to switch it off, as I use WhatsApp location facility, when I am out on my own, in case I take ill, then DH knows where I am.

Times on line have now posted his Obituary.
There is also an unpleasant pictures too of where they found him with rescue team covering there noses.
Such a shame, poor family.

Dingleberry he was hardly 'trekking off'! I understand he was walking back to the apartment and it was less than an hour's walk away. He was an apparently fit 67, and he had an umbrella to keep the sun off him - it's the kind of thing I would certainly do, to keep fit on holiday, and may well have been what he and his family did all the time. The only thing that's a bit puzzling is that he said he felt unwell, but maybe the only way back was to walk - we cannot judge. He was a lovely man, wise and likeable - I'm very, very sad RIP Michael

Very sad, and his poor family having to return home without him.
I guess the major flaw was, as described by his wife, that he took the wrong road leading over rougher terrain.

SAR half my life. bad outcomes were, being alone in mountains where i worked no water phones dont work in many places never never go alone .i live in the gulf of mexico now so different needs but
phones might work on the water but,freshwater,food and flare gun,matches, common sense helps too

The local Facebook group for the village we regularly visited on southern Crete had posts from the civil protectorate last week pleading with visitors not to hike . Two people had died in the unusually high June temperatures. They referred to the pressure on police/mountain rescue and local volunteers when people hike in high temperatures, often without adequate water etc.
I’m very sad for dr Mosley and his family. Accidents do happen. I always carry my mobile for that reason.

Such terribly sad news. He seemed such a lovely man with the most infectious laugh. I'm so sorry for his poor wife and their children.

I normally carry my mobile with me, but have certainly been known to forget it. Now my husband, that’s a different situation altogether. He doesn’t like mobiles (?? I know) and rarely carries his, despite my pleas to him. What to do 🤷🏼‍♀️

I am quite surprised that a medical man did not take his phone and lots of water - he seemed so sensible.

It is so sad for everyone. A very sad day for his family.

So very sad , My heart goes out to his family. However......!? Why would an intelligent man set off for a walk in such extreme heat , at that time of day. Wonder if he was trying to prove he could do it ? We will probably never know what happened , may be rest in peace - he will be missed, by family and the public.b

I wonder if he decided to visit the Monastery which is why he walked in that direction and not down the road to Symi Town. The walk doesn't look easy according to reviews.

I have felt so sad for him and his family today. And this evening but for the long walk in such heat they would be enjoying a Greek meal in a taverna and the rest of a lovely holiday to look forward to. Just so very sad for them all.
