Sad news - It looks like Michael Moseley has been found

My DH was a builder and worked in Greece one summer. They started at 6am working til 11am during June, July and August - no one would be doing any strenuous activity outdoors between noon and 4pm.

There have been many comments by colleagues and also his wife saying that he was "adventurous" and "a risk-taker", and when he was still missing, I watched the brief film clip of him with his umbrella, and he was really striding purposefully which I posted about on here at the time.

He wasn't just strolling in the heat, and I do wonder if he was actually challenging himself because he had that sort of nature.

I have also read that he particularly recommended spending time in nature without a phone which is clearly bad advice in certain circumstances. I make sure I carry my phone, but it doesn't mean I look at it every 5 minutes. We're lucky enough to have this technology and I've found it very useful when, for example, my car broke down one time.

I agree, Sparklefizz. I always make a point of taking my phone with me when I'm out and about, whether it's walking the dog or going somewhere in the car, especially if I'm on my own. I may never look at it at all during those times, but it's there in case of emergencies.

I think the biggest risk he took was not letting his wife and friends know what he was intending doing. Had he rung them from a cafe in Pedi to say he had arrived there and that he was walking on towards Ag. Marina the searches would have been made around that area much more quickly. It would have made no difference to the outcome, but Mrs Mosley would not have had 3 days of anxiety and the search parties would have focused on one area albeit still a difficult search. If only he had stayed in Pedi and spent a couple of hours there with a drink in some shade he could have met them from their water taxi and travelled back to Symi with them and be enjoying his holiday now. It is just so sad. If there is anything good to come out of this, it will be that tourists in hot countries will respect the hot sun and don't take risks. Also in cold countries. I was told off by a local for not wearing a warm hat in Finland. Not liking hats is not an excuse in those winter temperatures.

It just goes to show how debilitating excessive heat can be. I know people are fed up with our weather at the moment but it suits me. I find temperatures in the 30's and nudging 40 degrees pretty unbearable. After just a couple of days I feel really unwell. A tragic end for poor Michael Mosley and his family and friends and he was fit for his age. Just goes to show what extreme heat can do. RIP.

I can remember being in Addo Elephant Park in South Africa and the temperature was mid 40's.. It was only for a short period of time but my whole body swelled up..

A Weleh man went missing on Zakynthos five years ago. His body has never been found and the son said the search was not extensive, they stopped looking after five days.
The family brought in their own search team but no trace has ever been found.

We holidayed in southern Crete in mid May for years. Young fit fifty year olds. We started hiked at 8am latest, finished by 11 am by which time it was too hot

The only time I’ve ever seen vultures was at the end of our walk along the Samaria Gorge.

Unfortunately it was obvious this would be the outcome He was quite definitly a risk taker and risk takers never see the danger to themselves they have done many things over the years and come to no harm and this was just another challenge
The authorities believe he was dead before the alarm was raised so maybe his heart just gave out after all that exertion in the massive heat and he would have just become unconscious and unable to fight the searing temperatures Chances are he knew nothing about it but the family left behind will probably always be saying to themselves why didn’t I stop him or make him take a phone

I was in Egypt one exceptionally hot year in May. We went to visit the Valley of the Kings and the tour began at 6am. By 11 am it was approaching 40 degrees and far too hot to walk about.

Agree, it would have been sensible to take a phone but according to news reports the guy who has gone missing elsewhere has 2 mobile phones with him.
It's possible that even has he had one with him therefore it might not have helped. I know that when I had a bad accident although I had a phone with me I couldn't access it as it was in a pocket and I couldn't get it open.
Believe it or not many years ago I got heatstroke in w Scotland, it was an extremely hot day and actually a similar landscape, a treeless rocky mountainside alongside the sea so the sun was reflected from both sides. I wasn't alone, it was very scary though. Although had I been alone I'd never have gone to that particular area

Even in dying, this man has taught us things.

But a phone can be tracked so his location could have been discovered.

I had sunstroke as a teenager and it was horrendous.
