I dont think we should criticise Michael Mosley. Perhaps he left his mobile behind to help him unwind. As I understand it his walk wasn't pre-planned and he may have decided he didnt need the mobile on a water taxi and at the beach. If you are in the public eye the mobile is probably both a curse and a blessing. I seem to remember he suffered from insomnia and was probably trying to have a complete break to unwind. RIP Michael. I thought he was an amazing man.

Looks like I’m the only person on here never to have heard of him too.
Only he knows whether he took a wrong turning on his walk or what happened tho.
From what’s reported on the news about him he did all sorts of stunts to see what effect they had on him.

He was one of a kind, we don't have enough TV presenters that really know their subject like he did. He put himself through trials and I always thought of him as genuine. His poor wife and children must be wondering what was wrong with him to take on the challenge of walking during the hottest part of the day, when he should have been relaxing or having a siesta. I have a theory that this walk was another of his experiments because he must have known, when he set off, he would be 'pushing' himself, esp at his age. If not, I can only assume, his lack of judgement that day was due to something else. He reached Pedi but chose to carry on walking. His wife said he nearly made it, which is a strange thing to say (understandably she was in shock, but nevertheless I think he was possibly a bit of a stubborn person and may have been warned by her not to take things too far that day).

I’ve seen a video of exactly where he died which makes much more sense of it. From what I’ve pieced together he took a wrong turning which took him away from where he was staying. He then headed towards the other beach ( it was probably a while before he realised his mistake but thought it would be better to get to the marina than turn around, only to find the whole area was surrounded by a six foot fence and he couldn’t find a way through it). It was all a tragic mistake.

Hiking in the wild mountainous hilly areas of Greece is risky. Hiking on your 2nd day in a Greek heatwave, at midday without a phone and enough water - bad idea

. It's a tragic way to go but perhaps his prominence can save more lives if people understand why and what to do instead.

We're just back from Corfu and it was absolutely roasting some days. Our daughter got married out there on Thursday and it was a baking hot day - she actually said she felt as if she had got a touch of heat stroke just from standing on the beach and cliffs to have their wedding photos taken - it was so hot that the soles of her husband's shoes actually melted. So I can easily understand how this could have happened.

My daughter’s wedding is in Rhodes exactly a year from now. I’m dreading that possible heat (I’ve never wanted to holiday “in the sun”).

The reports of the temperature dear Dr Mosley faced that day are horrific.

RIP to a most engaging presenter, it’s a terrible tragedy.

My first thought, too. My ex husband used to hate beach holidays, always used to hire a bike and go cycling. Over the past few years he’s cycled from Scotland to Lands End in both directions and is currently walking the Pennine Way. Even I would hate to be on an island that wasn’t suitable for walking.

My husband loves to go walking when we are on holiday too, and even last week in Corfu, in those kind of temperatures, he insisted on carrying on with his walks, but he went early in the morning before the temperatures got too high and I always checked that he had his phone with him just in case of emergencies, and he kept his walks fairly short. Normally, he walks for a couple of hours, several miles each day back at home in Scotland. Even the locals were saying it was unusually hot for June.

I think I recognised his name when it came up but I've never listened to or watched his programmes. I believe his wife has said he had a sense of adventure. Perhaps he set off with a kind of adventure – or test with his knowledge of human physiology – in mind. No-one knows. RIP.

He would not do that. Yes he did do rather extreme things, but he did them in a controlled scientific way.

It is the sort of thing that he would do. He wasn’t very aware of dangers and not frightened of putting himself at risk. You can see that from the things that he did on tv.

The sad thing is, MM was in all probability dead before his family reported him missing. RIP Dr Mosley.

They were staying with friends who have an apartment there, I think.

Sad, yes, but I’m relieved in a way that nothing could have been done to save him ie he wasn’t lying injured in a cave for a long time and that he probably lapsed into unconsciousness still with a hope that someone at the resort might find him. Having said that, for someone that had suffered from insomnia he would have been doing everything possible to stay awake. If only he’d had his phone. I assume they only chose that particular holiday destination ( other than having friends there) as a way of getting him to wind down because I bet he was a workaholic.

If that is true, strange behaviour form someone who wanted to live a long life.

It's extremely sad that a well respected doctor died slumped against a fence when he could have been relaxing on a beach.

Just moving about in those high temperatures is so tiring even for a very short walk.

To the start of our walk, leaving at 7.30am. We’d aim to be back at our car or accommodation before 11.30am after which it was too hot to hike. We carried water, apples and oranges. I’m not criticising Dr M but it’s a mystery to me that a doctor ignored the obvious

I agree with Freshair in her earlier post. I did think it was strange for his poor wife to be comforted by the fact that he nearly made it. We are all different in our reactions but I would personally find it unbearable to think that he was just a few minutes from safety. We will never know but maybe his wife and friends implored him not to walk back in such terrible heat but he decided to do a sort of experiment to assess the effects on the human body. What a tragedy, he will be sadly missed.
