I was in a big shop in Birmingham and I saw a mum with a pram. I love babies so I had a peek, baby was tiny. I said how lovely how old? Three days! I said why aren't you home resting! I wish women would look after themselves better

Biscuitmuncher Mon 10-Jun-24 23:29:21

Callistemon I didn't climb in, I could see the baby. If she was worried about germs she wouldn't have been out

cornergran Mon 10-Jun-24 23:33:47

It didn’t occur to me to stay in after my two. Once I felt well enough, day four with number one and day three with number two as his brother needed fetching from pre school, out I went. No one commented, I’d probably have laughed if they had. Tone of voice matters a lot with these things though, I hope your comment was made gently and kindly binscuitmuncher.

I have to say, I wouldn't have minded if it were me, I would have appreciated the concern

A lot is expected of mums at times that we just carry on when we probs oy shouldn't

Get up, do the school run, tidy the house, feed everyone with the flu? Of course we did... Wish someone had been there to out me to bed but needs must

Not your business OP.

Biscuitmuncher Mon 10-Jun-24 23:57:00

cornergran it was said with absolute kindness and concern

NotSpaghetti Mon 10-Jun-24 23:57:57

How very rude and invasive, Biscuitmuncher.
This make me feel very angry on behalf of the mum.

Baby was out with mum!
Back off!

VioletSky we definitely have to get on with family life after a baby, but Zaras on a Saturday in brum?

I "told her off" with kindness, I suppose I remember how awful I felt after giving birth and Zaras would be the last place on earth I would have been

But that's you!

Maybe she wasn't feeling awful and fancied a trip to Zaras?

I’d be worried about germs with a very young baby like that but you can’t judge. We are all different. Kid will probably grow up as tough as old boots !

I was shocked by DDiL who gave birth at 9am in hospital and when we visited her at home at 4pm she was making us tea!!!
She's a nurse so should know better.
I told my son off.

You can't always stop people being silly.
I am told on good authority (retired midwife at that same hospital) that new mothers are often readmitted with excess bleeding and other emergencies as are babies, so I do not think Biscuitmuncher was out if order to speak her mind, gently.

I would have too.

OldFrill Tue 11-Jun-24 05:27:31

Surprised she didn't retort with 'what are you doing out of the home at your age?'

Framilode Tue 11-Jun-24 06:08:21

I popped across the road to the newsagents the day after giving birth. Someone reported me to the midwife and I was well and truly told off by her when she called the next day.

Pantglas2 Tue 11-Jun-24 06:29:46

Ooh Framilode that reminds me of being properly ticked off by the nurse who ran our ante-natal class when we bumped into her 10 days after my daughter was born who said I shouldn’t be gadding about…😳

Calendargirl Tue 11-Jun-24 06:33:04

I wouldn’t have looked in the pram, not interested in looking at unknown babies, and certainly wouldn’t have commented on her being out and about.

Absolutely nothing to do with you.

You and me both.

Not your business and to tell people off who you don’t even know from Adam what a cheek
There’s nothing wrong in being out after 3 days if you’re fit and well just because YOU were unwell 3 days after giving birth doesn’t mean every else one is
Cheeky

RosesandLilac Tue 11-Jun-24 07:39:22

How incredibly rude and disrespectful! I did a supermarket shop the day after I had dc2, it was either that or we didn’t eat (DH was away)
It’s hard enough being a new mum without some interfering busybody butting in 🤬

zakouma66 Tue 11-Jun-24 07:42:16

Do people have prams nowadays?

Nice story anyway. Back to the custard creams now.

petra Tue 11-Jun-24 07:55:04

Well that went well, didn’t it 😂

GrannyGravy13 Tue 11-Jun-24 07:57:18

Oh dear 😱

I flew to my parents home in mainland Europe when DS4 was 10 days old, and when DD arrived two weeks late I had no choice other than to go to a conference the other end of the country with her at six days old.

(Neither were easy births, just got on and done what had to be done, which included going up to London Passport Office in 23/12 to get passport for DS only a few days old)

She was out of order.

And so would you you be.

You have no idea of any woman's circumstances, health, needs, wishes - after they give birth, so it is none of your business.

... and midwives vary considerably in their views and in their advice they give.

Unless a new parent is in obvious distress, or looking for help - they don't need patronising by complete strangers wagging a 'gentle' finger at them.

Tbh I agree with you, shopping in Zara three days after giving birth seems crazy to me, both for the new Mum and the baby.
This isn’t a trip to get food or nappies cos there’s nobody to do it for you after all.
Don’t worry about the tut tutting at you on here.😃

OurKid1 Tue 11-Jun-24 08:39:27

You were totally in the wrong to poke your head into the pram, then compounded that by poking your nose into her business. I'm not surprised she told you off. You remind me of the woman who reached into my baby's pram many years ago and turned him onto his front because "that was safer my dear."
