I was married in ‘72 and wore red!

I married in 1958 and yes, our picture was in the local paper with a full description of family, bridesmaids , what everyone wore and where we worked.
There would be about 6/8 published every Friday.
Also funerals were reported on, with mourners who attended and a photograph of the deceased person.
It took the place of social media in those days.

I too was married in ‘72 and wore rust trimmed with black!

They even said what gifts they had from work colleagues!

I had completely forgotten about seeing the wedding pictures in the local paper! And haven't seen a local paper for many years.

I wore a high necked Laura Ashley corduroy dress in a brown flowery pattern in 1973 in February. I must have looked like a pair of curtains!

I remember our photographer was keen to tell us our wedding photo would appear in the local newspaper for free. We told him we didn't want ours included. He thought that we were very odd.

I married in July 1973 and wore a pale blue linen suit with a white shirt and a big, floppy white hat. No picture in the local paper; my brother in law took the pictures, dozens of them and I still have all of them.

I've been married twice.
First in 1973 was the white high necked dress with bell sleeves trimmed with daisies, long veil etc. Two bridesmaids sore navy blue dresses trimmed with white daisies.
Second wedding in 2005 I wore a plum full length silky dress with matching long silky coat. The coat had rags of the same fabric stitched over it at random. I loved it and wore it again at son's wedding. It didn't matter a not that I'd worn it just six months previously.

I married in 1969 and wore a pale pink knee length dress with white spots. DH wore a matching tie.

I married in 1972 and back then, you had your wedding picture in the local paper. We wed on the Saturday and were front page news on the coming Wednesday.

Also (in the fullness of time) the birth of your babies was in the ‘Hatched’ column as well,

My wedding photo was in the Henley Standard. The headline was ‘local woman to live in Seychelles.’
I wore a Gina Fratinni white cotton dress which was in two sections.

I was married in 1973.

Secondhand dress; floor length, cream silk, high neck, long sleeves, broad brimmed hat to match. I looked a bit like a mushroom.

DH wore his black, interview suit with a silver coloured tie.

No bridesmaids, no official photos, nothing in the paper.

Friends took photos and sent them us afterwards.

We are still together unlike some of our friends whose weddings were much grander.

A while ago there was a thread on here where Gransnetters posted their wedding photos. It was so lovely to see all brides and their new husbands .... and all the amazing wedding dresses
I have never learnt how to post photos so 1970 DanniRae didn't appear.

We got married in 1981 and our photo went in the local paper. I wore a high necked Laura Ashley dress. I loved it! Still happily married.

Can you imagine how the journalist might have viewed such an assignment?
Perhaps they saw themselves as investigative writers, breaking exciting news, and then.... and woe betide them if the mother of the bride outfit was described wrongly.

Chocolatelovinggran maybe some did - but I think many photographers did weddings to just earn a crust. I had a friend who was one of these. He was good at weddings but loathed them and as soon as he could he dropped them for more lucrative and interesting commercial work. No copy there!

Of all the shops closed in the last decade or so the closure of Laura Ashley made me the most sad. So many memories of lovely, well made clothes over the years.

My wedding photos are like scenes from Wuthering Heights.

We got married in January 1977. Our photos were taken on a hill overlooking the sea. The sky was so dark and almost black and clouds were rolling in from the sea. A real storm was brewing! I looked very pale and bewildered in my white dress with my veil having a life of its own in the wind.🤣

I was ahead of the field in 1962 in a hired dress (second wearer so like new), very classical with long sleeves, bell shaped skirt and a very short train. My DGD commented recently that it was a dress which could be worn today! I remember the difficulty of managing the hooped petticoat in the car but certainly felt amazing - just not quite like me. DH looked so handsome in his morning dress and the photographs still bring me pleasure, particularly one of the three year old bridesmaid yawning mightily.

The dress was fairly floaty. The under-dress was full length with leg o mutton type sleeves and over the top was a three quarter length pinafore. I bought it from a wonderful shop in Oxford called Campus, which is no more.

Goodness when I look back to 1974. (Yes this September is our Golden Wedding anniversary hopefully). The weather was absolutely dire! An aunt cheered me by saying ‘happy is the bride the rain falls on’. Correctamundo.

Anyway the local photographer was bobbins looking back. Brides today are more savvy (or their wedding organisers are!). Our reception was in the BEAUTIFUL venue of Lancashire Cricket Club. It was literally round the corner from my parents house.

But what did the wally with the camera do? Sigh….

He took every single photo in the grotty church ‘hall’, next to the vestry. Think youth club/jumble sales/scouts venue. Radiators in the background. Beige wallpaper. Just off the bluddy cloakroom.

When I think of the venue my parents had booked and the photos we COULD have had for our wedding album! 🤣🤣
We were naive. We never took control of the situation! Brides nowadays ‘would be on it’!

GrannySomerset, I too hired my dress. My mother and I had trailed round lots of shops without finding anything we could agree on (!!!!) We happened to pass a dress hire shop and went. The first dress they brought out matched one I had sketched the day previously while talking a friend.
