How old were you when you got married( if you are married )?

I was the ripe old age of 19 which was not unusual at the time but now couples seem to wait and wait if they bother at all. A lot of ‘older mums’ around now, too. It was very unusual for someone to become a first time mum in their 40 s in those days. I remember being described as an ‘elderly multipara’ when I had my 4 th at the ancient age of 31. I was quite hurt by the description at the time. What on earth do they call people now ?

We had a hilarious interview (in retrospect) with a fertility counsellor to make sure we were "Doing it properly".

I have just remembered my DH saying "We do both have O'Level biology, you know." He is an art's graduate. I was a state registered nurse at the time, a fact they already knew. It didn't stop the counsellor describing in embarrassing, childishly worded detail what we should be doing. I just remember front bottoms, thingamejigs and back bottoms being mentioned.

21 wife was 19, 1st daughter 18months later, lived in mobile home for 2 yrs, no fun in winter with a baby.

I was 25 and DH was 34. Our third child was born in 1978(6 years later) and when she was in primary school he earned the dubious reputation of being the oldest Dad in her class .

I was 19. Had my son 15 years later.

I was at uni and had to get permission to marry from the uni authorities! Talk about interference in your life. Of course, because my future husband was an academic with a PhD , they ‘allowed’ it. Probably wouldn’t have if he was a brickie.

Auntieflo Fri 14-Jun-24 09:14:38

I was 19, DH was 22. First child in 1963, second 1956, third 1975. We will have been married for 63 years this September.

I was 22 and DH 25. We've been married for 53 years. Sadly our twin babies died soon after birth but we were lucky enough to eventually have a daughter and little later a son. They both have a family and live not far away which is lovely.

Married at 25 and divorced by 28. Its not that my ex husband was that bad a person - we are still in touch and he never forgets my birthday. I should never have married anyone Im far too strong and independent a person to need to be one of a couple.

Had a few casual relationships since (friends with benefits) but never contemplaited living with another person since.

Never wanted the burden of children.

I married 3 weeks after my 21st birthday.
I would have married on my birthday but in those far off days, 1958, we could only take two weeks holiday in August when the place closed for two weeks.
The other reason was that my widowed mother would not give her permission which was required then until the age of 21.
My H was 22.
We were married for over 60 years until he died.

I am enjoying the fact that so many GNs have been married longer that I have (51 years next month).

It doesn't happen to me very often in real life.

Lovetopaint037 Fri 14-Jun-24 10:01:42

I was 18 but 5 weeks off 19. Dh was twenty. It was 1960 and not unusual.

annsixty Fri 14-Jun-24 10:02:03

Children born at 28 and 33.

Sar53 Fri 14-Jun-24 10:07:57

We married in 1974 both aged 20. Daughters born in 1976 and 1979. That relationship lasted 19 years.
I married again and we have been together for 16 years and hopefully there will be many more years to come.
I can't believe we married so young, but that was what people did then.

Spuddy Fri 14-Jun-24 10:18:58

I'm now 59 and hubby will be 63 in August.

A first marriage for us both when I was 42 and he was 46!

We met in September 2007 and officially married February 2011!

No kids by choice as I was 6 when decided I didn't want any.

cornergran Fri 14-Jun-24 10:27:00

I was 20. Had to get my father’s permission. Mr C was 25. Our first child was born after 6 years, a straightforward home birth Our second when I was 29. A firm message, had I reached the age of 30 a home birth wouldn’t have been allowed. Not sure what difference six months would have made. wink

Married in 1969. I was 24 and DH was 27.

Jane112 Fri 14-Jun-24 10:36:38

I was 18 and my husband was 22, we met at work, still very happy together 46th anniversary next week.

henetha Fri 14-Jun-24 10:38:58

I got married two weeks after my 21st birthday and we lasted 32 years. But I never liked the feeling of being married and it ended badly, although we remained good friends.

Gin Fri 14-Jun-24 10:49:46

We both were 21 and have been married for 62 years. Three sons born in 65, 68 and 75. Looking back we were far to young but his work posted him to Africa so it was get married or goodbye! We had our honeymoon sailing to South Africa, not much more than school kids!

Kate1949 Fri 14-Jun-24 10:49:54

I was 20. DH was 23. 55 years this year.

Cherrytree59 Fri 14-Jun-24 11:12:35

Married at 22
First child when I was 23.
Second child when I was 26 ( and classed as old mum!)
Still married 43 years and counting
Hoping for many more 💜

Strangely my cousin's son is just turning 22 and consider him quite young with his 20's in front of him , that hopefully will be exciting and interesting.
I am glad I married young, but times have changed.

Curlywhirly Fri 14-Jun-24 11:28:50

Both me and DH were 20 when we got married in 1976. Waited 9 years before having children (I was petrified of childbirth and kept putting it off!). So glad I plucked up the courage - can't imagine life without them and my much loved grandchildren.
