There are so many different types of chemo drugs for the many different cancers and they differ in their affects on the body.

You're right HelterSkelter1, My daughter couldn't have the cold cap as its known to make her particular chemotherapy regime less effective. Despite knowing she would lose all her lovely long hair, it still came as such a shock and upset her a great deal. She did make the smart move to have her brows microbladed just in the nick of time as her treatment was started very quickly. They look so natural.

There will be those who look at the Princess of Wales today and think because she looks stunning, she can't be that unwell. Those of us who have experienced this nightmare will know only too well of the huge effort it will have been for the Princess and how exhausted she will be for days afterwards. She has my absolute respect.

Calipso Very best wishes to your daughter. I am on a blood cancer website and yes cold cap cannot be used for blood cancer treatment. Despite my cancer being normally an older persons disease, there are many young men, women and children on the Facebook closed group. Young women with young children and even young babies. And my heart goes out to them. Parenting is difficult enough anyway let alone when you are feeling very ill yourself. The fatigue is dreadful.

The hair loss in the face of other problems is dispiriting for those women affected. However many say that once it is gone, or you have shaved it off, the scalp is not so painful. And it will eventually grow back albeit curly to begin with.
I am glad your daughter got in quick with the micro blading. The loss of eyebrows must be hard. Some women on the site bought hats with a built in fringe, or some of the many beautiful head coverings and wore them with big sunglasses which look good..

Unlike the Princess, most people don't have to face the public and the press which is full of fake sympathy. She looked her usual lovely self today and I wish her well in her recovery.

HelterSkelter1 yes, hers is Hodgkins Lymphoma. She did some very creative stuff with head wraps gleaned from cultures that traditionally cover their hair and really rocked that look. She's quite similar in age and appearance to the Princess of Wales so that story unfolding has really touched my heart

You sound a caring supportive mum Calipso. I expect Carole Middleton and her husband have been through nightmare times as well. Calmer times ahead for you and them.

I think she was putting on a brave act when she knew the cameras were on her. We all do this when we're ill but are trying to look better than we feel. I did the same during my own cancer treatment so as not to worry my teenage children.

She made a huge effort to be there and I hope it hasn't been at too great a cost.

She has probably kept her hair because the chemo she is having doesn’t cause hair loss. When I was offered chemo following bowel cancer the consultant told me that.

A friend of mine who is receiving treatment for prostate cancer has not only lost all his body hair but his finger and toe nails as well. I have never heard of this.

It really was uplifting to see The Princess. She looked stunning, as usual. I hope that her sterling effort did not take too much out of her. This whole thing is a bloody tragedy.

I too lost toenails during chemotherapy and had a pulmonary embolism which curtailed my treatment.

I thought Kate looked good considering what she's going through, Charles not so much... At least the sun came out for the fly passed... Love Louis... let's hope he doesn't turn into another Harry...

More important by far is the love and support of her close family. The Middletons have been impressive with their discretion from day one.

Catherine really inspires my respect. Yesterday must have been a massive effort for her.
And that picture she took of William and the children for fathers day is just lovely.

I have just crocheted a hat for a friend who has lost her hair due to chemo.

Another friend (50) has just got the all clear. She was diagnosed just a week or so before Kate. She has had major surgery - just about everything removed inside plus many sessions of chemo but lost all her hair too.

Kate was very fortunate to keep her lovely hair because most people don’t.

I did have the thought that had Kate lost her hair because of her treatment she would have been able to have a beautiful hair piece made! However I really do believe that looks should not matter - it is healthy that matters - but we do live in a highly visual world nowadays. I wish her the very best - it would be good if one day she can share a little more.

For Bumface - and others -- pretty much every week new processes are discovered which find cancers quicker, or at least predict folk likely to have a higher risk so they can be tested, even before they've detected a problem. And the early detection is key, to most of them.

More drugs are appearing, sometimes they've been developed for other illnesses but have been found to cure or at least alleviate a cancer, pretty much by accident.

Still some people will be diagnosed too late, and treatment is difficult, or only has a low chance of success, which will always be a shame.

But in general I think there is great cause for optimism. We thought Kate looked great (what a terrific outfit!) though even thinner than usual (no great surprise, given what she's going through). Lots of fingers Xed that her treatment and recovery keeps on going well.

As a doctor I think this is much more serious than the anyone is saying.
She's having a lot of " preventive " chemo .
Feels more like treatment than preventive.
I hope it's just because she's a princess that they are going OTT.
Grateful her beautiful hair is still present.
Gives me hope as serious treatment for ovarian cancer ( most probable diagnosis in a young woman) causes serious hair loss

Mirren, I’m not a doctor but my experience of cancer in loved ones in recent years has had me reaching the same conclusion as you. It’s felt much more like treatment chemo than preventive. She’s a mother, daughter, wife first but such a positive asset to the royal family. She’s done so much imo to break down barriers and engage with members of the public. I pray she will fully recover
