The borough has the highest rates in N Ireland. hmm.

We can go across the border and back to a shopping centre but not change buses and go onward.
Thry will let us go home again!

Er, no. Before 1066 the land was held by the Saxon aristocracy. The King and Thanes and Ealdormen who served the King and were rewarded with manors.

The ownership of the land merely passed from the Saxon elite to the Norman elite. Nothing changed, or not very much.

Ok Monica but same holds. The land should not be held by such a small group in perpetuity while others struggle to survive. Diana took her boys to visit the homeless while her family lived in massive estates. Don’t suppose her education got that far.

Edward 1st invaded and took Wales in 1277/83. He was a Plantagenant King not a Norman. The first English Prince of Wales was the future Edward 11nd born at Caernarfon Castle in 1284.

It also includes lots of people with no titles at all but have owned land and lived in the same place for many generations.

We have several around where I live. owned land and a house for 500 years plus, but is just a plain Mr (and Mrs)

The monarch does not rule but is Head of State. I miss The Queen but agree about Charles

William will be a reluctant King, will do his duty though. imo

We would probably not vote to have a monarchy if it did not exist. But we DO have one and it seems popular. I like the King as he is a kind man and cares about the environment. But I think Camilla should be Queen consort. I can’t think of her as Queen. Having said that, I don’t think we will have a monarchy for much longer but can’t quite imagine how it would come to an end.

Agree with you about probably not having a monarchy. I can't forget the history, we were invaded and the invader land grabbed from the people. Charlie is probably very nice, not remote like his mother, but the money they have is the result of the 1066 invader taking vast amounts of land from the people who were trying to survive by growing crops. It is the 'hangers on' that want their life style preserved. I don't know any members of the rf and assume they are very pleasant (except the Ginger one and his keeper) but their vast wealth and entitlement does not fit with 2024. Time it was phased out.

What’s a landed gentry ?

I don’t understand why we are so fond of the monarchy and the landed gentry. Look at the history of how they became landed. Land used to be held in common. The Norman Conquest saw it divided out amongst the Norman lords. Then more of the common land was taken under the Enclosure Acts. People were driven off their land where they had been able to grow enough to feed their family and a few beasts.
The King and Prince of Wales own large tracts of land across the uk including the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall. Why are we ok with this outright theft? We don’t need them. Their jobs are unnecessary and we pay them outrageous amounts for shaking hands and conferring knighthoods. Then we go out and and cheer.Why?

I'm not a monarchist by any stretch of the imagination and think most of them are over indulged beings who have no idea of real life as it is for millions of their 'subjects'.
If we have to have a monarchy then The Netherlands style would be the one I prefer. They go about their business in a very ordinary way and don't seem to be surrounded by security. I've seen them as a group at two fairs and they have gone on rides, joined in dancing etc and there is respect for them but absolutely no fuss. They were a breath of fresh air compared to ours.

I suspect that William will be a very relaxed monarch with a good rapport with people. More like the Dutch, Danish or Swedish monarchy. Fine by me but no rush.
