We would probably not vote to have a monarchy if it did not exist. But we DO have one and it seems popular. I like the King as he is a kind man and cares about the environment. But I think Camilla should be Queen consort. I can’t think of her as Queen. Having said that, I don’t think we will have a monarchy for much longer but can’t quite imagine how it would come to an end.

A Queen Consort is a Queen. Any woman married to a ruling monarch is a consort, and always known as Queen, just as Queen Elizabeth the Queen mother was Queen Consort to George V1 and known as Queen Elizabeth.

I don't see Camilla as being 'strong'. Her husband has cancer, as does mine and I'm sure many other people on here. She did what she had to do like the rest of us do. He had the best care in the world I would imagine.

The royal events are certainly spectacular and probably the best in the world.. which seems to attract a lot of revenue and support..
how long these events and the new slightly modernised Royal family will be relevant is questionable with all the wars and climate events.. I doubt whether it will continue beyond the next generation but I'm glad I witnessed it all in my lifetime

Charles is a caring man, and Camilla was so strong when he was receiving treatment for cancer, never has searched for cameras she certainly faced them on her own then.

Queens Alexandra, Mary, Elizabeth were Queen Consorts, married to a king, same for Camilla.

I prefer King Charles slimmed down monarchy although with recent unexpected health issues amongst the working Royals he may have to reconsider how far he trims it. When he is back to full fitness I would like to see him move entitled Andrew out of Windsor once and for all. The King and Queen are doing a good job and seem more relaxed than the late Queen did at times.

I want a cheaper monarchy.

I am a monarchist.

I fully supported the late Queen, and I fully support Charles & Camilla (who I think is doing a fabulous job stepping up whilst Charles has been ill)

Each Monarch has their own style, appropriate for the times,

Charles has moved on from how his late mother did the job. She was on the throne for 70 years, so it’s inevitable things would change. I think it’s good he has Camilla by his side, she must be a huge support.

In the fullness of time, it will change again as I’m sure William and Catherine will have a different style.

As for when George inherits….well, doubt many of us on GN will be here to see it.

The job of the monarch is to host banquets, visit worthy venues, be photographed and be seen in public and gawped at as often as possible. They don’t rule in any sense. Yes they meet the pm and sign off legislation, but they can’t influence any of it, it’s all just a bit of a pantomime - they've even got all the costumes.

I love all the pageantry, it is wonderful. I think Charles and Camilla are doing a great job and are more in touch than the Queen was. Both of their time, as someone said. Sooner or later I think Australia will secede because they are a long, long way away and their traditions are not ours but meanwhile the spectacle is something to behold!

I'm not bothered that Camilla is Queen - I just don't see the point in being exercised about it.

King Charles is of his time, the Queen was of hers. I admire them both in different ways, Charles’s life was more normal than QE’s. She never went to school or mixed much with people outside royal circles, so she was more remote.

(I also cannot think of Camilla as ‘The Queen’, lthough I accept she is Queen Consort.)

henetha Tue 18-Jun-24 23:17:12

I fully support the present monarch just like I supported the last. I'm a monarchist. I think Charles is a warmer and kinder character than Queen Elizabeth was, but she was a good, dutiful monarch and hugely popular.

I do not think you can really make coparisons. Each monarch has adjusted their style to meet the needs of the age they are part of.

I would prefer no monarchy ,its a medieval concept unfit for the 21st century

keepingquiet Tue 18-Jun-24 21:53:48

I didn't know we had a choice...

Vegansrock, I didn’t know how to phrase it. Sorry if I’ve used the wrong terminology.

vegansrock Tue 18-Jun-24 21:17:36

I hate to break it to you, but King Charles doesn’t actually “rule” .

Whethertomorrow Tue 18-Jun-24 21:04:39

I don’t know if monarchy is the right word or not but what I’d like to ask is do you prefer the way King Charles is being King or the way Queen Elizabeth ruled?

My personal view is that I prefer Charles’ way of doing things. He comes across as very caring and kind. I think Camilla has given him love and support and he has relaxed into a much more genial figure.

I think QE was very remote and guarded, which is not a criticism of her but a result of the time and manners of when she came to the throne.

What do you all think or not as the case may be.
