Anyone had a road closure for several days?

There's bound to be someone who leaves their car and the council will just work around it.

So they will just leave a hole in the surface of the road where the car is? Isnt there a chance the car might get damaged?

Yes, we’ve had it done, cars were moved, it took three days and was much improved.

I hope they do it when they say they will. We've had signs up saying the road past us and through the village would be closed from last Monday for two weeks. So far there is no sign of any work starting. They will give access for residents but I hope we get a bit of warning. I don't want to wake up one morning and find a trench across the drive.

Yes, a road near us 2 days from July 11th. It won’t affect us too badly as we can go a different way, but I’m not sure where the residents will park while it’s happening.

Any rural, that is, road closures around here, tend to say, closed for 1 week.
They are normally all finished in 4 working days.

The estate I live on has only one way in/out and is a crescent. It looks like they are doing only part of the road and have given fairly precise details. However I just spoke to a relative who had this happen. He said its very noisy when they have to break up the existing surface with jackhammers.

Oh joy. I will have to work in the back of the house on that day. There is a school nearby and I wonder if any of the entitled mums will be inconvenienced. Oh deah. Poor kiddies having to walk a few yards.

Nephew says they will tow away any cars that are in the way and its about £150 to get it back.

Round here the Council tow the car to a nearby street, no fine.

You can't win. We complain about pot holes and then we complain about the inconveience of road re-surfacing!

Our road was closed a few weeks ago though the re-surfacing was at the other end. It said it would take them a week but when I asked it was clear it was a week at a time and they'll be coming back until it's all done- at this rate it's be three years before they do my end!

We had this happen. The resurfacing consisted of spreading grit and tar and relying cars and lorries driving on it to compact it. Nothing as grand as removing the top surface and relaying it.

It affected the main road through the village rather than ours and when on 24/7 and some people complained about the noise at night, but cannot have been too noisy asnwe heard nothing.

Although they said a 4 day closure, it actually cnsisted of closing the road during work, so most of the time the road continued in use.

We then had 2 weeks with no road markings of any kind. A bit disconcerting to have a zebra crossing with beacons but no road markings.

If you feel the need to work at the back of your house you could spare a thought for the children walking to school along the pavement a lot closer to this noise than you are likely to be or the notsleeping younger sibling in its buggy or pram.

A close relative of mine - who I visited often, had a massive road closure that lasted 2 years!
It was a major safety issue, so nothing to be done, and in such an extreme situation, the local authority swings into action - assessing vulnerable people's needs etc.
Deliveries had to be left at a collection point - a local post office. Car parking areas were arranged.
A point was identified for ambulances, so paramedics would only have to carry a patient 300 hundred yards - which didn't actually happen.
Everyone was told that any major building works would have to be postponed - and again an area identified in case of emergencies (which also didn't happen)
The slippage that caused the issue was no-one's fault. Everyone got council tax reductions - and how the counsil coped with that, I don't know.
One of those odd situations in which a big problem is coped with by all concerned with goodwill.

Has anyone had a week road closure? Yes, we had an 8 day road closure.

Four days, a few years ago.Massively inconvenient and noisy but it had to be done.

Our road was closed for resurfacing a few years ago. The signs said it would be for a week but the work was completed in three days and the teams are so used to carrying out the work it was done very efficiently. It was very noisy with strong vibrations. Sadly it scared away a family of sparrows that were nested in our eaves, we were waiting until the autumn to block up their access.

The road just outside my house is often used as a turning circle so no wonder its worn away into pot holes. The notice I got was very specific about "removing the existing surface, adjusting the carriageway ironwork (whatever that is) and the laying of a new surface." So I assume they are not just going to fill in the pot holes and then leave it.

Just googled and road ironwork such as manhole covers, road gullies and duct covers need to be bedded with a resilient mortar to prevent the unit rocking or breaking up under traffic loading.

If I was into watching workmen they will be right under two of my cctv cameras for part of the time. What fun.

So yesterday a near (but not nextdoor) neighbour knocks on my door twice. Once was after the 9pm watershed. Needless to say I ignored her. I was brought up not to disturb people on a sunday unless it was a dire emergency.

This morning I found a note pushed through my door with a phone number asking if I will get back to her. Apparently she does not have room on her property for ALL her vehicles and wants to "store" one of them on my drive during the above cited road closure. She does not want to leave it just anywhere on the estate as it may not be safe.

Some of you may recall a thread from last year when this same woman wanted to use my drive for one of her vehicles. When I pointed out that "renting" my drive would not be a cheap option she backed off. It was clear that she expected me to allow her to park on my drive for free as I have no car.

What a cheek coming around on a sunday to ask again! I was going to ring her but I dont want her to have my number. My nephew is coming around tomorrow with his large and fearsome looking biker mate to do a job. They are going to go over and "have a word". Biker mate looks very intimidating in his black leathers with studs and skulls although he is actually avery nice chap.

Why can’t you just give her a call today? you can hide your number, rather than being so intimidating.

Its not my problem that she has more vehicles than will fit on her property. At the last count it was 4 vehicles so not exactly concerned about the environment. If you want a favour then you dont knock on someone's door after 9 pm!

If you take the trouble to read my previous thread you will see that she has already been refused once. She is disrespecting my boundaries by pestering. A sharper lesson is now required.

I did read your previous thread, in fact I recall it from when it was first posted, it doesn’t change my view.

My nephew will probably be a lot less threatening than I would. He will simply instruct her not to contact his aunt again without "going through" him. And he will give her a mobile number (if she asks) for an old phone which he never answers.
