Takeaways are rip offs

I thought I'd treat myself to a takeaway. It was so disappointing. Bland, warm and I'm not convinced it was chicken. Then the stress of the delivery and using the app. I feel ive been ripped off. I've no idea why there are so many takeaways in business.

I've learned my lesson and never again.

Would love to order a take away occasionally but no companies deliver where I live, if they did it would be stone cold by the time it got here.

I am 83 years of age and never had a takeaway in my life. and I can't see myself doing so either. If I want something to eat there is always plenty of food in the house, fridge or freezer

The only takeaway I have ever had was a chinese meal many years ago. The shop closed down so I have never bothered since.

I'm sure there are things many of us have never done, that others choose to do.

That's how things work, as a rule.

I find the worst Chinese or Indian ready meals are those from supermarkets! Very poor standards, hardly ever any meat/chicken & always very watery.
I’d rather get a takeaway from a reputable local restaurant - standards are never as good as ‘eating in’!
Just my opinion

We have a couple of very good Indians near us, DH won't order a Chinese because he thinks it best for a large group

petra Tue 02-Jul-24 13:51:18

The first Chinese takeaway I had was in the late 50s.
I say takeaway because as we know there was no such thing but my mother and father frequently ate at a local ( Woolwich) Chinese restaurant.
Sometimes they wanted to have the meal at home. As my parents were such good customers my father would go with me on the back of his vesper scooter with a large saucepan which the restaurant would fill with a Chow Mien and off we’d go home.

A very sweeping statement to make David49. (Unfair, largely untrue and quite rude in my opinion, towards those who enjoy an occasional takeaway).
There may be people out there who prefer not to cook, for whatever reason - that’s up to them. Other people, myself included, enjoy an occasional takeaway, and I most definitely am not too lazy to cook, I cook most days. However, do you know what, occasionally, I don’t feel like cooking, or have run out of steam about what to cook, so, on those few occasions we enjoy a takeaway or a meal out, and it’s wonderful not having to do the preparation, the thinking about what to cook, cooking it and clearing away of all the cooking paraphernalia afterwards when we do decide treat ourselves.

It sounds very much as though David49 lives alone…
How very surprising!!! NOT!!!

Oh dear, David49. I think all you can take away from these comments is that you might need to eat your words!

MissAdventure Tue 02-Jul-24 14:09:09

Well they’re pretty good here or they would go out of business. Within 10 minutes we have Thai x 2, Chinese x 2, Indianx2 , Vietnamese, Japanese, Maccas, Guzman, Pizza, fish and chips x 3, Korean x 2. If they were no good you would have plenty of others to choose from. They are all, except maccas and Guzman, small businesses. Wouldn’t vouch for maccas and I think Guzman is foul but that’s my choice !

David49 A ready meal cooked at home is far less effort than a take away, so that is the really lazy option - Is that what you do?

With a takeaway. you have first to find the right menu on a noticboard somewhere, or is it in the sitting room with the tv remotes, but of course, I recycled it last week, so we had better look it up on our/pc/tablet/mobile phone. Then you have to decide: Chinese? Indian? Pizza? Fish and chips? Mexican. Then have an argument while you decide what to have then you have to order it, pay for it and then stand around twiddling your thumbs for 45 minutes until it appears.

Compare that with having a ready meal. Go to fridge, take out ready meal, take lid off and place in oven/micro wave and then eat. Thats a doddle

- unless of course you are talking about a home made ready meal where you make, for example a batch of bolognaise sauce, and spaghetti and ate one portion of sauce and spaghetti and froze three ready assembled spag bols, to eat later - that is called excellent planning.

I’m very fortunate to live near a fabulous Indian restaurant/deli , it’s not the cheapest but is most certainly the best around here. My family all use it both to dine in or takeaway which is always really hot when it arrives. Our local Chinese takeaway used to be great, but it’s gone down hill.

lizzypopbottle Tue 02-Jul-24 14:26:11

Cateq probably a change of chef...

i rarely have a take out, the reasons? expensive, i like to make my own, and a good friend used to work in one, check the hygeine!,but i wouldn't tell anyone what to do or not to do.

David49, Everyone chooses how to spend any money excess to their budget. And all people spend their excess(es) differently.

I'm not a fan of takeaways or ready meals or restaurant meals - anything I don't cook, however others are, so be it. I spend on cleaners, window cleaners, gardeners, and people to mow the fields - are those equally wasteful?

No, not wasteful, just choices.

That daft expression - "you do you" comes to mind.

I live alone and so occasionally have a takeaway of something that I like but dont want to keep in my freezer for a long time. So love prawns and know that my very good chinese is very busy so it is all fresh and safe. My own version of take away is, I have a wok and I buy chicken thighs without bones. So my usual is a small amount of oil then cook onions and chicken,, cut into strips then add thin strips of carrots, celery, and sometimes green pepper.. and radish Toss around, add soy sauce and some sweet chilli sauce and either have rice that I have already cooked or sometimes buy the packet kind that take 2 minutes in the microwave and that is my "take away" I know what is in it, takes very little time to cook and is delicious, made even better by knowing how much less it has cost!

Only takeaway we ever has is fish and chips. KFC is really near us and never ordered. Recently a video taken after closing and posted online showed a rat frolicking on the overhead display! Always called it kentucky fried rat 🐀

keepcalmandcavachon Tue 02-Jul-24 14:56:41

David 49 ,criticizing other folk's food choices nearly always leaves a bad taste in the mouth wink

NotSpaghetti Tue 02-Jul-24 14:58:02

Surely, a ready meal cooked at home is lazy then david?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 02-Jul-24 15:06:54

Funnily enough, I am surprised at the amount of people who have never had a takeaway.

That isn’t being judgemental at all, it is just I thought everyone did occasionally, I don’t know of anyone who hasn’t ever.

Just shows

Aveline Tue 02-Jul-24 15:35:20

Nobody in our flats has takeaways.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 02-Jul-24 15:38:01

I’m talking about never ever had a takeaway. Surely most people have eaten fish and chips?
