Takeaways are rip offs

I love a takeaway and treat myself when I get "paid" every month. There are dozens round here. I especially like the Pizza from Dominos, the bases are lovely and light and plenty of toppings. There's only one fish and chip shop in town and they don't deliver and only open during the day.
I don't have more pizza/curries etc because I would be the size of a house and very poor if I ordered what I wanted. I don't enjoy cooking for one.

There's a very good Chinese takeaway pretty close to me...they offer lunch time deals which I think are very good value. The food is delicious and actually the portions are so large, I tend to save half for another day
When my son is here, we'll occasionally treat ourselves e.g two meals with a couple of side dishes £12.

I rarely order delivered takeaways though my DD does it all the time. I have a fish and chip shop 5 minutes walk away and a chinese a 5 minute drive so I go and order in person. There used to be a great Indian restaurant in the village but it changed hands and I had a disappointing meal so haven't used them since. I miss that and need to try another one but haven't got around to it yet. I try to make it an occaisional treat as it can be expensive compared to cooking at home. DD has a much higher income so I guess that's why she uses them frequently after a long day at work. I don't have that excuse now as I'm retired!

I have two excellent Indian restaurants near me who also do takeaways. I also have a branch of Chicken and Blues who do the most delicious wraps with salad, fresh chicken and a beguiling choice of sauces as well as sweet potato fries etc. I don’t have takeaways often but when I do these are the ones I use. I dislike most other takeout foods such as Chinese, pizza, fish and chips, burgers etc so am lucky to have these nearby. Just wish I could find a good Mexican one!

I feel very sorry for David’s wife.

The last takeaway we had was Thai, but there are numerous choices. From traditional fish and chips, Chinese and Indian to Japanese to Italian to French to Mexican to Vietnamese street food and everything in between!

All delivered to the door and all delicious.

Spoilt for choice really.

Oooh get you - do you do the cooking at home?

What did you have and what was the cost and then how much would you charge for the same product/service? Takeaways are a business, a source of income for the owner and if not profitable they go out of business. I wonder how long you would last

Hey David49, who put you in charge of judging those posters who enjoy a takeaway. Since I now live alone, takeaways have been replaced by an occasional ready meal. I’m very cautious about where I buy them but M n S and Charlie Bingham are acceptable to me. They aren’t a patch on a takeaway from the take our fron theySais Spice restaurant near me, or our local Bangladeshi take out though .. the fun in ordering together and sharing several dishes is great

One of the problems we've found with takeaways, particularly Chinese, is the high turnover of chefs. We've stopped using one local Chinese takeaway because the dishes we liked have changed and we don't like them any more. It's just a guess that the chef has changed yet again but we can't think of any other reason. We only indulge once a month and it's very disappointing if it's not good.

The Indian takeaway we use is pretty consistent. There are chef changes from time to time but the owner/manager has remained the same and he often cooks and he oversees the kitchen.

Letting one bad experience of a takeaway put you off ever getting another one reminds me of someone I used to know who went abroad once and didn't like it so didn't leave the country after that .

There are so many different types of takeaway, and within one country there are different cuisines, and some chefs are always going to be better than others.

Of course it will be more expensive than cooking at home (although maybe less so if you have to buy in particular ingredients that aren't in the pantry) but you are paying someone to shop, prepare the food, cook it and deliver it, as well as for their fuel, rent and other overheads. the stress of using the app will lessen if you get used to it, too.

David, can we assume that you cut your own hair and make your own clothes, or are you too lazy to do that?

If I buy take-away, I fetch it myself and have never felt that it wasn't good, but then I stick to Indian food.

Obviously, eating out, whether in a restaurant or buying take-away, is dearer than making food at home.

As to how so many take-aways can make a living: it is quite simply because by and large anyone younger than we cannot cook, or can only cook two or three things, so they buy take-away.

So rarely have a take away …..getting more particular about what goes into my food these days. Would much rather prepare and eat a home cooked meal because of all the additives restaurants use to enhance the taste of their food. Even though it gets to be a bit of a chore some days, I prefer home cooked meals because I know what we’re eating!

I prefer to boil up my used dishcloth with a lovely healthy pile of lentils and potato feelings to make a tasty, nourishing soup... mnmnm... yum!

I think the biggest takeaway rip-offs are pizza. Even the best quality ones are very reasonable to buy in the supermarkets but delivered to your door about 4 times the price and lukewarm into the bargain. As for ice cream vans they are charging £5.50 for a cone, a drizzle of sauce and a flake now.

I'm surprised that no one gets really adventurous and tries an English !

We have a cafe that delivers a great english roast on Sundays, so I'm told.

We have a very good Chinese restaurant locally, who do collection. We rarely use them though, as we also have a Greek restaurant we can order and collect from, and I prefer Greek food to Chinese.
They're both used as rare treats though, as although the food is delicious, the portions are just too large and we both end up feeling stuffed after a takeaway/collect meal!
We do have a very good traditional Fish'n' Chip shop fairly close, and as we're coastal, the fish is brilliantly fresh, a 'Fish Dinner' from them is excellent, although two 'Dinners' costs £36-00 with an extra £2-50 delivery!
We have a 'Domino's' pizza place a few miles away, but we never order from them, theirs are very poor products at dreadfully inflated prices!

How judgemental.

When we had 3 children at home,a MIL in the next county who was in the last weeks of her life and both of us working full time then thank the Lord for food delivery.

If you have a wife/partner I feel for them.

Oh it does get on my wick, though.

We have a lot of fairly local home delivery places and when I get something duff from one of them I never use them again. Always a treat and not on a regular basis as by the time you add delivery fee and a tip for the driver it starts to get expensive to have too often.
