The point is Rayner is now a serious polititian (we hope) her actions, words and demeanor have consequences, she needs to conform to conventions because other people, especially women will judge her.
Johnson’s slovenly style did him no good at all, it contributed to him being the 2nd worst PM that I can remember, (Truss wins that accolade)

Angela Rayner ghastly trouser suit
(1001 Posts)OMG the Deputy PM looked a fright walking along Downing Street this afternoon.
Showwaddywaddy called and want their suit back!! 🤣
She looks like she either has no bra on or a badly fitting one. Her boobs are almost down to the waistband of her trousers.
Surely it is time to get out of this gutter.
. The (apparent) superiority, misogyny snd snobbery is breathtaking.
We are better than this.

What AR was wearing was truly awful. Tasteless, unflattering and unprofessional. Ghastly. She needs to learn some lessons about dressing professionally.
We must ask ourselves: Are we fashion gurus? Are we licensed to cast aspersions and be judgmental in our comments? Times change, things change, people change. Yes, we are entitled to an opinion. It is a free country, but, it is how we express that opinion that counts in my book. I, for one, wish her luck, green, red or whatever colour trouser suit she chooses to wear.
What dreadful small mindedness is shown on this thread. It reads like a throwback to 1954 not 2024. Women don’t need men to judge us by our appearance and undermine our capabilities when there are so many women willing to do it for them. AR is one of the most powerful people in this country now, surely we can be respectful and mature enough to judge her by her actions not her appearance like schoolyard bullies.
Me-Em has lovely stuff and not M&S prices but this outfit AR had on was awful.
If you think comments on GN are unkind, you haven't seen Twitter "X" comments, and that has a much wider audience.
David49 not sure where logic is leading this argument - from memory, Liz Truss wore immaculately tailored trouser suits for her brief time in office. I still have not forgiven her for the havoc she caused.
I know lots of you liked Victoria Starmer's red dress but actually I didn't like it at all for several reasons- I don't like those cut-open sleeves anyway but I thought that because the bodice and sleeves are cut as one, the strange way it pleated to points at the bust did VS no favours.
Just saying!
It would never (ordinarily) have occurred to me to comment on here about it though.

Oh goodness, you must have missed the threads about Boris, Jacob R-M etc and some others of our male politicians and their attire!
Johnson’s slovenly style did him no good at all, it contributed to him being the 2nd worst PM that I can remember, (Truss wins that accolade)
And the one thing about Truss which would be difficult to criticise is the way she dresses!

I m gobsmacked by your cattiness GSM
I have always despised AR. She is devoid of taste, class and manners. Her choice of clothing today shows her for what she
Good grief what’s wrong with you GSM !
this sheer bitchiness is totally uncalled for and says more about you than herThe usual ‘says more about me’. Perhaps it does. I worked in a professional setting for my entire career, and there was a dress code. If you are a professional person you adhere to it. It is what’s expected. I appreciate that the majority on GN didn’t have to adhere to a strict dress code but that is no excuse for not understanding the importance of it in a professional setting. I dressed stylishly and certainly not frumpishly. AR has not taken on board the importance of how you are perceived as a professional woman. It’s not a fashion parade but you can still dress fashionably, attractively, but within the bounds of what the world expects of a professional woman. Whether she will ever learn the lesson I don’t know, but I’m not optimistic.
But this isn't about you, it is about Angela Rayner's trouser suit. What relevance does your background play in this discussion? How do you know the true backgrounds, professions, and lifestyles of the Gnet posters? Let us adhere to a broad and balanced discussion and keep the comments open for everyone to be able to offer their own equally valuable contributions.

I was criticizing her performance as PM not dress style
I would rather judge someone by their ability to do the job, than what they wore. There are some truly horrible remarks on this thread.
David49the point is that Liz Truss definitely knew how to dress for the part. And I guess dressing the part is no guarantee of competence.

Same outfit, different camera angle, different time of day, hence less creased.
I'm not the least bit interested in abusive posts about AR but perhaps worth thinking about how things are presented to us.
The last two posts show this discussion should probably be under Chat or Style. I just want to discuss clothes and fashion, related to the wearer's shape and colouring.

I got it David49 🙂
I get the message on this thread from indignant posters.
Male politicians are fair game, those such as Johnson, Rees-Mogg, Starmer etc can be roundly criticised for the way they look, the way they dress.
Women politicians are never, ever to be criticised for their appearance, the way they dress because that is bitchiness and downright misogyny. Letting down "the sisterhood".
Mixed messages are coming through. Has no-one heard of misandry?
If one is called misogyny then the other must be misandry.
Surely it's not too much to expect our politicians to look tidy, efficient and as if they mean business whatever they choose to wear?
And the trivia continues…..we have a new government for the first time in 14 years and all some people can talk about is AR’s clothes. And this is a News and Politics thread? Good grief!
Why do we talk about what women wear rather than what they do? Today times has an article on what Victoria Starmer wears! It 2024, move on. The only time it matters if what they wear is a distraction from what they are saying. I hate powerful women wearing fake long hair and fiddling with it while they deliver important messages.

If there had been a thread about VS and her red dress then you are as entitled as anyone else to say what you think about it.
In fact it’s also fine to say it on a thread about AR and her trouser suit, since we’re discussing what many think was a fashion mistake yesterday, why not?
Quite why posters are so up in arms about the fact that we’re talking about clothing is a mystery.Because she’s a woman? That’s a bit sexist.
Some of the personal attacks on here towards one poster are what’s awful in my view.

Have you somehow missed the many threads about the election and the aftermath? It’s on the news and politics thread cos AR is the new Deputy PM and in the news.
I had an aunt who, whenever I had a new item of clothing, even when I was 12, would say it was tarty. It was her favourite word. My mum and I used to laugh about it.
I think what is really happening here is that some posters feel protective about ‘our Angela’ as she had a difficult life as a teenager and after waiting a long time Labour are finally in power with AR in a powerful Cabinet position.Any criticism of her clothing is therefore taken as a criticism of her and her origins and against Labour generally.
Am I right or am I right?😄
Well, this Labour voter, very happy about the result yesterday, can still distinguish between all that and having a view on the trouser suit she chose to wear.I didn’t like it.

Why was Mrs Sunak dressed as a zebra? Does any of this really matter?
At least Mrs Sunak was sensible enough to be discreetly holding an umbrella, although she didn’t use it.
Pity Rishi didn’t have the use of it 6 weeks ago.

Start a serious thread then.
And no, perhaps you've missed the other, more serious, threads.
Perhaps it should be under Style and Beauty as suggested.
But I don't think threads about Boris's style and beauty ever were.

‘Tarty’ was a favourite word of my mother too - the other was ‘skimpy’ - which she tended to apply to anything that actually fitted properly. When I was about 14 she pushed me into buying a knitted sweater dress (with my own Christmas money) that was 2 sizes too big, since the size 10 was ‘skimpy’. 😩
As a result I hardly wore it - the size 14 ended up as a staple of her own wardrobe! That grated on me for years!
