I love watching Sport...but I like other programmes as well...why does it absolutely take over 😡...what percentage of viewers watch it soooooo much?

I love the Olympics, so it’d be churlish of me to complain about the tennis, which leaves me cold. A dedicated BBC sports channel seems like a sensible idea, but perhaps they don’t have the wherewithal to buy the rights to enough sport to fill it?

What annoys me is that they take off the usual channels to put sport on. In this day and age of technology, surely they can make a special channel for sports and not disrupt my evening viewing. I end up watching films.

By the way, I hate sport. Our two sons and my late husband were sport mad. Football, Cricket, etc. etc. you name it they watched it. I used to go out and leave them to it when it was on TV or have a lovely quiet afternoon in when they went to matches.

What about Football.... Football.... Football, disrupting our soap schedules?

Susieq62 Tue 09-Jul-24 11:32:04

As a retired PE teacher and netball player/ umpire I love all sport but I really don’t ENJOY football 🤷‍♀️
I will watch aspects of Wimbledon but not all matches. I love it when there are very close games.
My day at the London Olympics was one of my best days ever and I so admire/ respect all of the training, hardship, heartache our athletes in all of the sports go through. I think football is overrated and top players over paid for falling about. They need to train with rugby players then they will know how to train hard!
Sport, for me , can be a great leveller but increasingly it is becoming out of the grasp of young people with limited financial means . I shall soak up the Olympics like a sponge !
I would like to see a new Wimbledon champion though and feel a lot of the charismatic players have disappeared.

It’s about time the BBC had its own dedicated sports channel with red buttons for what is available on that day.
Not everyone wants wall to wall tennis, football, athletics, snooker etc etc.

It’s same 2 weeks every year you could always record stuff previous to it starting. Personally I love Wimbledon and go when I can.

Milest0ne Tue 09-Jul-24 11:42:52

Why is sport equated with balls? There are plenty of other INTERESTING sports available, many of which would make good tv viewing.
I remember Manchester Evening News refusing to report any Judo because it didn't involve a ball hmm

I have just had knee replacement surgery so housebound for 6 weeks and I am going stir crazy with nothing but sport on TV, on every channel, and I do not subscribe to streaming channels eg netflicks etc, and olympics starting soon, I am climbing the walls with boredom!

Love the tennis and never tire of watching it. It's only two weeks a year whereas football seems to be never off the screen. A bit disappointing and a bit worrying this year with lots of injuries, court-side physios etc. I can't help wondering if the players nowadays push their bodies to limits that are too extreme. Sad to see young players such as Raducanu with injuries and undergoing surgery.

I am so fed up with football & tennis on all the time

Babamaman Tue 09-Jul-24 11:58:03

I love tennis but too much is too much when you get the same game on both BBC1 & 2? And then Clare Balding incessantly dissecting every match!
Please can we have the veterans ! That’s worth watching!
Sunday was tennis tennis, football & motor racing 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪

I think that most of the Olympic coverage will be on iPlayer.

Wimbledon Wimbledon Wimbledon ....love it ..love it ...love it. Definitely a love match for me!

When I had severe whiplash in 2002 (hit at 60mph whilst stationary by a woman on her mobile!) I spent 11 days lying on the couch with a neck brace but able to move my eye from one side of the screen to the other I watched daytime Wimbeldon coverage all day every day (other programmes then were limited!) - I really haven't watched much tennis since!

GrammarGrandma Tue 09-Jul-24 12:31:45

I hate all sport except tennis and the Grand Slams are avaiulable only on paid-for services - except Wimbledon! So I'm happy and there are many other free channels for peopel to use. I particularly loathe the way football domates all year round now.

Iwtwab12bow Tue 09-Jul-24 12:33:26

Goodness it's only 2 weeks in a year. The football seems to have been going on for weeks. It just happens that Wimbledon, the Euros, the Open and the Olympics all come at once. Its not as if there arn't dozens of channels to choose from.

Kate1949

I put the TV on the other day. It was Wimbledon BBC1 and BBC2, football on ITV and a Grand Prix on C4. Ridiculous.

I agree, I don't like watching sport on TV and I've only just recovered from DH watching the rugby.
The best thing about smart TVs is that you can watch virtually any programme after the event, so why on earth don't they limit it to one channel and give the non-sports people amongst us an alternative.
I'm really not looking forward to the Olympics, might watch a few finals but it really does go on.

If you have a smart TV (or a Firestick, quite cheap!) to connect to your router you can stream a huge amount of free TV from the normal channels, including box sets of series and some films. We hardly ever watch live TV now, except for news programmes, as there is so much choice.
You can also watch YouTube.

Davisuz Tue 09-Jul-24 13:08:56

Oh God, I hate it too! SO boring. Really annoyed on Saturday as I was stuck at home with COVID and a faulty internet connection. Both BBC1 and BBC2 were showing tennis all afternoon...

sazz1 Tue 09-Jul-24 13:14:39

It's getting me down too. Either sport or politics for weeks now. Hope they change the record soon.

Stillstanding Tue 09-Jul-24 13:16:16

I love it and live near it but too disabled to actually go just down the road but I still love it. Also looking forward to the Olympics and then soon it will be Strictly.

I read that some researchers found that just watching sports and activities is good for you. I do hope so. We should all be fitter by Christmas.

karmalady Tue 09-Jul-24 13:24:26

I am using the time to sort some stuff in my garage, no noise, no babble. It is pleasurable today as ds wants to begin wood carving and I have much to hand over, slowly, as it has to be sent, a box full at a time. So there is the zen, of packing a snug box, taping it up very securely, much better psychology than the bang bang of wimbledon ball on racquet

knspol Tue 09-Jul-24 13:27:31

I love to watch Wimbledon, it needs to be on both sides so that both men and women's matches can be seen and it's only for 2 weeks!
Have to admit I'm one who always grumbles about schedule changes for football matches but for a short while after Wimbledon I'm more tolerant.

Neilspurgeon0 Tue 09-Jul-24 13:30:57

Why the bloody hell can’t they just stick to my the damn sports channels and leave those of us who hate ALL sports to have some worth watching on the main terrestrial channels. Disrupting the news is UTTERLY unacceptable

RosiesMaw Tue 09-Jul-24 13:35:36

Thank goodness we are all different!
Watching someone one who is a master of their art, whether ballet (Carlos Acosta) , drama (Mark Rylance) music(Pavarotti or any of the Three Tenors) sport (Jude Bellingham, Rafa Nadal) or a craft such as in The Repair Shop is something I find truly inspiring.
My box packing skills would alas inspire nobody 🙁
