I love watching Sport...but I like other programmes as well...why does it absolutely take over 😡...what percentage of viewers watch it soooooo much?

It's weeks since we've had anything on tv except football and politics. There's also been horse racing on ITV and all sorts of other sports too and now we have Wimbledon, and the Olympics to follow shortly. I used to enjoy Wimbledon, certain parts of the olympics and the occasional game of football or rugby but now it seems that we have nothing else but sport on the main channels.

I am glad I don't pay for a tv licence nowadays, if I had to pay I would be complaining to the BBC.

The options to watch something other than sport have very limited recently it’s been football, horse racing or tennis. Next week it’ll be golf closely followed by the olympics. I feel really sorry for anyone who doesn’t have access to streaming services as the terrestrial channels don’t cater for people who don’t want to watch sport. If I’m ever left to live alone the first thing I’d get rid of is the TV and just stick to my books and my music

I don’t watch daytime television, never have, but football on both channels is too much. I think it’s thoughtless of the TV companies.
It’s easy for some to say it’s only for a couple of weeks, but some people live alone, some are housebound. There’s no thought given to these people at all.

why does sport - any sport - interfere with everyday TV programmes?

you say Wimbledon, wimbledon, wimbledon and I say Hell, Hell and yet another hell

there should be TV channels just dedicated to sport , I personally would pay just to not even hear the word!

There has been very limited options on channels this last month or so. All we have had is politics and voting, football on at least three channels then Wimbledon. Is that what I pay my T.V. licence for? I often look forward to watching T.V. and have been bored silly with all this. Oh well it will be the golf next and the Olympics Great I just might as well not turn the T.V. on at all for at least a month.

I have just had knee replacement surgery so housebound for 6 weeks and I am going stir crazy with nothing but sport on TV, on every channel, and I do not subscribe to streaming channels eg netflicks etc, and olympics starting soon, I am climbing the walls with boredom!

If you have a smart TV (or a Firestick, quite cheap!) to connect to your router you can stream a huge amount of free TV from the normal channels, including box sets of series and some films. We hardly ever watch live TV now, except for news programmes, as there is so much choice.
You can also watch YouTube.

Yes, there are hundreds of options.

How can you say this?
Even without paying for Netflix or whatever there is a whole range of complete series, films, documentaries and dramas on BBCiPlayer not to mention ITVX, More 4 etc.
You could watch TV 24 hours a day without ever coming near a Sports programme.

Why can’t IT be on other channels then keepingquiet I m fed up with football Wimbledon taking over everything for the last few weeks why not bung it all on a sports channel can’t stand any of it

Totally agree!

4allweknow Tue 09-Jul-24 16:34:23

The European Football is covered for 4 weeks and standard football seems to be on tv almost daily. Wimbledon is a two week event and can't recall many European or other tennis tournaments being shown. I'll take tennis anyday and if I had my way I'd ban football.

JamesandJon33 Tue 09-Jul-24 16:44:25

Wimbledon and the football will end soon……to be replaced by the Olympics. Hey ho !

Madge10 Tue 09-Jul-24 17:27:33

I don't mind watching sport occasionally, however the amount of blanket coverage of certain events seems completely unreasonable to me. At times there is sport on all 4 main terrestrial channels, with repeats and old films on most of the remainder, with popular non sport programmes postponed/ cancelled.
As per previous comments

Madge10 Tue 09-Jul-24 17:31:43

Oops: first time commenting 🤣.
...,. surely we could have dedicated sport channels (although I'm fully aware that a lot is down to money!).

Grammaretto Tue 09-Jul-24 17:33:24

I used to enjoy watching Wimbledon but I connect it with warm Summer days, eating strawberries and cream and today is so dreich it has lost its charm.

jocork Tue 09-Jul-24 17:33:38

Thank goodness for BBC i Player and other services. With wimbledon and all the European football I'd be going crazy. It has given me the chance to catch up on some favourites. Although I have missed a few of my usual choices there is plenty more choice out there!

Foxyferret Tue 09-Jul-24 17:53:58

Love the football and tennis. Yes it’s unfortunate for those that don’t like sport that the Euros, Wimbledon and Olympics have all come in the same months. Next year it will be Wimbledon alone I think. However for 50 weeks of the year there are soaps, quizzes etc almost on a nightly basis in which I have no interest whatsoever but I don’t complain as I know people enjoy them. Not all of us can afford Sky sports and the BBC have got rid of a lot of sport they used to cover.

Fleur20 Tue 09-Jul-24 18:10:46

Love love LOVE Wimbledon!!
Can't wait for the Olympics!!

You and me both! I had a hip replacement 3 weeks ago and I was looking forward some easy afternoon TV watching. A bit of Money for Nothing and that daft quiz programme where they mess about on posh versions of disabled scooters and of course Countdown. I actually don't watch films that much and I don't like watching football or tennis. We are not adverse to streaming, we have been bingewatching Traitors US, The Bear and House of Dragons.

It just seems counterproductive of the terrestial channels to tell their usual viewers that they have no choice but football or tennis for a month, but if they don't like it they can go to streaming services. They might not come back!

Mojack26 Tue 09-Jul-24 19:33:23

Me!!! Love it and the Euros and looking forward to Olympics. We all love sport but I get it... If you don't it's total overkill! Always said BBC should have a Sport Channel for that very reason...but I'm loving it!😃😃😃

Mojack26 Tue 09-Jul-24 19:35:46

Me too.Loving all the sport! I don't watch game or reality shows...not my thing

lizzypopbottle Tue 09-Jul-24 20:55:41

Same deal with the Euro match, France v Spain. The Great British Sewing Bee postponed until tomorrow. It's absolutely the only TV I watch. It was the same last week because of Wimbledon.

Pantglas2 Tue 09-Jul-24 21:37:49

Not forgetting Tour de France are we? I’m back and forth through the channels like a dervish!

Missiseff Tue 09-Jul-24 21:43:37

I do

RosiesMaw Tue 09-Jul-24 21:46:12

Can I put I a request for a Soaps channel then please (never watch them) and snother one for brainless game shows like Tipping Point, The Chase, (ditto) and one for equally brainless reality TV shows- Love Island, Big Brother, I'm a Celebrity etc as I don't watch them either.

Callistemon213 Tue 09-Jul-24 21:47:41

I like Tipping Point 😁

None of the others, though.

RosiesMaw Tue 09-Jul-24 21:48:05

Why the bloody hell can’t they just stick to my the damn sports channels and leave those of us who hate ALL sports to have some worth watching on the main terrestrial channels. Disrupting the news is UTTERLY unacceptable

Channel 4 News?
