So do my granddaughters and they are in their late teens. I have no idea why GSM would call it old fashioned to use curling tongs unless she has no idea how to use them.

Having baby fine hair I use curling tongs and sometimes rollers to try and make my hair look thicker and give it a lift. These are not old fashioned methods for hair styling. Both are still used regularly by catwalk models, actors etc. A good cut will take you far but unless you are very lucky hair still needs help with styling tools and products.

I can't see anything wrong with feeling like you were "born to be a lady." It's a nice fantasy, 😉. And sadly, much of yesteryears olde world charm has been lost in the hurly burly of modern life,

I too opt to be waited on in restaurants. I loathe self service restaurants and cafes. I don't think that's old fashioned, it just seems a more pleasant and civilised experience and certainly a lot easier than queuing, and then faffing around with a tray of food and paying at a till. I much prefer to be seated, handed a menu and then waited on.

I also hate supermarket self service checkouts.. It's bad enough having to spend my precious time food shopping in the first place let alone grapple with an obstreperous scanning machine.

I also prefer to be a passenger than a driver, much nicer to sit and watch the scenery rather than battle my way through traffic.

I see nothing wrong with enjoying being served, waited on and chauffeured. If you can afford to pay a little extra for these services then why not.

Show me where I have said that everyone who uses curling tongs is old fashioned . I haven’t. I said you sounded old fashioned yesterday after your post saying you were born to be lady and always went for waitress service.

You are now stating that I sound old fashioned because I said I was born to be a lady and liked waitress service instead of self service. WOW, you are digging a deeper and deeper hole.

Why can't you just accept that I like to dress up when I go out, tong my hair and wear makeup, instead of being called old fashioned for it.

Dear Derbyshirelass.

Thank you for acknowledging that there are still people out there who love to be waited on, still love to get dressed up when they go out and still maintain a sense of dignity. If that is classed as being old fashioned then I am definitly old fashioned.

I would rather be old fashioned and look good when I go out than go out in trainers, tight leggings etc. etc. and look like a bag lady which many people of today do. Having principles is nothing to be ashamed of and no, I am never overlooked in a cafe or restaurant and long may it last.

I look good when I go out, but don’t ‘get dressed up’. I also look good when at home. You will usually find me wearing jeans and trainers, but never looking like a bag lady.

Oh don't get me started on modern dress codes (or rather the lack of them). Pjs and slippers whilst out and about......lol.

Lack of social graces, poor table manners, loud obnoxious argumentative people. You get the gist......

Unfortunately the word "lady" seems to be pejorative these days, anyone who has aspirations to be ladylike is often mocked and jeered at.

So I use the term "gentlewoman". I aim to be dignified, well spoken, well behaved, well mannered, courteous, thoughtful, kind and yes nicely turned out and suitably attired for the occasion,

Scruffs when I'm gardening, doing d.i.y or heavy duty cleaning and then scrubbing up nicely and being suited and booted when out and abouting.

It's all about standards. And you're right, if you look good you will often receive better standards of customer service, upgrades and the like.

I totally agree with you. Being called old fashioned by GSM for using tongs on my hair, dressing up when I go out and enjoying waitress /waiter service beggars belief.

In my opinion GSM has insulted every person who takes care of their appearance and enjoys the good things in life.

I started this thread as a light hearted mention of electric tongs being used in Downtown Abbey in 1918 and then get insulted by GSM.

Do me a favour GSM, please do not acknowledge any more of my posts on these forums.

Btw there’s nothing wrong with looking like a “bag lady”, so long as one is clean and well groomed, some of us just prefer to be comfy and casual when out, some like to doll themselves up.
