I am just watching the Downtown Abbey series for the second time.

I was amazed to see a maid curling Lady Mary's hair with an electric curling tong which was not invented until 1959.

When I first saw the episode I thought where on earth was this curling tong when I was a teenager in the late 50's, I had to use rollers.

I know they used curling tongs which were heated on the fire like flat irons used to be but showing an electric curling tong in the Downtown Abbey series supposedly in 1919 is a gross error.

I just hope it don’t bring the wrath of GNHQ down on my head as happened once before when I called something out and I was deleted instead! 🤔🤔🤔

I am reporting this, Maw. (Not you!).
This is NOT the type of post which shows Gransnet at its best.
We can do without it.

Whilst I totally agree with you, from a personal perspective and new to GN, it is nice to feel I can post a comment without receiving a harsh response. I am all for free speech and other's opinions to learn and enlighten but not in a derogatory fashion.

Hi. I know that when you search online for electric curling irons, some sources say they were invented in the 1959, but that is very untrue. I know because I own multiple ecletric curling irons from the 1920's and 30's. There are records for advertisements for electric curling irons as early as 1915.

Some french guy has one (of many) patents for an electric curling iron, and I guess some blogger found that and assumed it was the first patent for one, but often times the invention pre-dates the patent, patents are often for "improvements" on products, rather than the complete invention.
