A little prick in bed!

Was bitten twice by a False Widow Spider a few years ago. Didnt know what it was at first just had big red sore patch on my ankle. Left a couple of days then went to Docs as much worse. She had a piece of kitchen roll on her desk. A man had limped by me as I went into her room. She said she knew what my sore patch was & opened the kitchen roll. Inside a dead spider! Doc said that was what had bitten me. The man who left before I went in to see her had been bitten & had slapped his leg where he felt the bite. He was diabetic so went straight to the doctors before it got worse taking the dead spider with him! Hate spiders anyway, especially the huge ones that seem to chase you until they catch you! Always check my bed before getting in & check the floor & walls of the room as I walk in! Living alone have to deal with the monsters myself so have many gadgets to catch them in to evict them! My Nan always said ‘if you wish to live & thrive, let a spider run alive’! So try to evict them but the huge ones it is a case of them or me!

Get well soon. Horrible experience, but do keep an eye on it as I have read a spider bite ( of a certain type …false widow?) can lead to real problems. If it’s not clearing up, go straight back to your Doc …or A&E..

Just back from the New Forest with 3 red itchy horse fly bites on my leg . 😳 Lathering them with Anthisan which helps and have wrapped my leg in a wet sports scarf that remains wet if you flick it.

We have red ants on our allotment, which are absolutely vicious, and I react badly to their bites, they last for several days.

I'm always wary of strange looking spiders as you don't know if they have hitched a ride from abroad.
There are many species of British spiders though. Many of them seem to like my flat.

I have started one but I've started talking to myself on it

Well, I've a morbid fascination, so it's fine by me, but I'm not in charge.

as this is a spider thread, I found one in my garden and it looked a bit dangerous (I cupped it up and put it in the front garden away from the back as I was worried about the dog) Can I post the photo of it?

I think ants can bite you and deposit formic acid which will be unpleasant but not dangerous but I live in Scotland where you can be mugged by midgies!

This reminder me, I bought a tick removal gadget from a National Trust shop back in the spring as I had read just how nasty these ticks can be, especially if we don’t manage to remove them completely intact.

Talking of spiders, I always take a glass of water up to bed with me, and then a few years ago read ( it may possibly have been on GN) how someone had a swig of water in the night without putting the light on, felt something in her mouth which was a spider 😮

Ever since then, my water is in a container with a lid!

Here in Tennessee, we have brown recluse spiders and you are never more than 12 feet away from one (they say). My father was bitten and developed blood poisoning but recovered. My friend's husband put clean underwear on from a drawer and spent a week in hospital. Guess where he was bitten! Pest control companies put small very, very sticky patches in places (inaccessible to pets and children) around your home. They come back to monitor and identify your crawling pests. You can also purchase these squares even in food stores. Good to know what is in your home!

My dh was bitten by an ant today. It really stang him.

I think I have some of those flying ants that we are being warned about, as I have had about 20 in my upstairs bathroom.. Does anyone know if they sting?

The problem is if you don’t get the bullseye mark which can happen. When I was bitten I had my leggings tucked into my socks but my sock slipped down leaving a small gap. And I hadn’t put insect repellent on as I hadn’t been planning to walk that way. My dog wasn’t with me and hadn’t walked through any grass: just walked down a path to the beach. I thought fleas were bad but find ticks to be on a different level!

Re ticks - when walking in long grass with the dog, I always wear ankle length trousers and tuck them into long socks. Also keep arms covered.
I was bitten by tick when lying on beach in Scotland! The bullseye mark appeared and I was on antibiotics for 3 weeks.
No lasting problems. Never been bitten by spider though!!

Spiders take their lives into their own hands if they’re seen in our house. I don’t see them as an endangered species, rather it’s them or us! The message must have got out as rarely see one, mind you it is mid-winter atm.
