Words hardly used now

I have just read that words like wazzocks and plonkers are rarely used now.

How about swinging and grotty made popular in the 1960s?

When I asked my granddad how old he was he’d say ‘Same age as my tongue and six months older than my teeth.’

If he was going somewhere it was either the man and his dog or ‘To see about a wigwam for a horse’s bridle.’

Around here we used to say guzgogs for gooseberries.

SueDonim Sun 28-Jul-24 13:28:59

Oh yes, goosegogs for gooseberries. Also

Hedge pigs for headgehogs
Cackle berries = eggs.

Witzend

Stout*, oh yes, my granny used to say that. Ditto ‘vexed’ - you never hear that any more.

*I recall a line from The Forsyte Saga - ‘My dear boy, how stout you’re getting!’
(The bloke, Swithin IIRC, was not amused!

My nan always used that.
"You remember so-and-so, stout girl. Used to work on the buses" smile

Four farthings to a penny. Two farthings to a halfpenny. Six halfpennies to a thruppence. Two thruppences to a tanner. Two tanners to a bob. Five tanners to a half-crown. Twenty one bob to a guinea. Cripes! I'd better scarper, in case the rozzers come after me in their black maria, for my tuppenny-ha'penny contribution to the discussion.

Conceited seems to be largely replaced by arrogant.

Gormless
My mother once described one of my, shall we say, less-intellectual teenage boyfriends as a gormless wonder.

Darn it! Nothing at all against the florin apart from a failing memory. I guess I could also have include half a nicker for a ten bob note ?

Anymore for anymore ?
