Separate beds

One thing that has made our marriage more comfortable in recent years is the fact that we sleep in separate bedrooms. Of course we are lucky enough to have enough bedrooms to do this. Thing is I get too hot in the night, he is too cold, I snore and get restless on my sleep, he has trouble with his prostate which means he can be up and down and he suffers from insomnia.
About 10 years ago we finally decided enough was enough and we started sleeping apart. We agree has been he best decision. He can now sit up in bed reading or listening to the radio when he can’t sleep, and I can stretch out with just a sheet over me when overheated. Have spoken to several of our friends about this and some already do it, others are so uncomfortable at night they are seriously considering it and another couple say they couldn’t ever imagine sleeping apart.
Anyone else in the separate bedroom camp?

We share a king sized bed but always book twin beds on holiday as it gives you a bigger room usually

I occasionally disappear into a spare room to put a fan on if we're having a hot spell and I'm tossing and turning so as not to wake my other half. I'm generally back in our bed before he wakes. These days I have quite a bit of broken sleep, it's a matter of not wishing to inflict my restlessness on him. I have no desire to take up permanent residence in another room.

We have had separate rooms for years now-Hubbie a very very loud snorer- and I could not cope with the sleep deprivation - it was making me ill- felt a bit embarrassed about separate rooms to begin with but used to it now- more expensive to go away tho we have to book apartments with two rooms!!!

There is nothing wrong with separate beds/rooms if that suits you better, what is is important is to maintain the intimacy of the relationship, a kiss and cuddle morning and night makes all the difference

No atm we sleep together but I am considering it. OH goes to bed at 10pm or 11. He's a big guy and takes up most of the bed even though it's king-size. He loves a cool room and leaves window open.
I go to bed about 1am or later. I like to read and the lamp disturbs him. I close the window as its freezing most nights, then have to partly wake him to move over so I can get in bed. Total nightmare.

We’ve had separate rooms for years, and we’re both very happy with the arrangement. Fortunately the house is big enough that we both have large rooms and decent sized beds, but I bagged an en-suite shower room. 😁 We actually sleep at opposite ends of the house, but after the summer influx of visitors have left he’s moving to the room next door. 😘

We share a bed but not a duvet. We have separate coverings which is wonderful because I get far too hot, but he does not. So I may have a sheet and a very light other layer over me, while he has a duvet. It works brilliantly for us!

My parents had separate single beds in the same bedroom for several years before my Dad died in 2018. Mum likes a soft mattress and Dad liked a firmer one and this halfway house arrangement suited them brilliantly. Mum has a top sheet under the duvets so that she doesn't have to change the duvet covers every time (as do l). When she changes her duvet cover, she always changes Dad's cover to match.
We moved house last year and the main spare bedroom is a double bedroom. We decided that buying two single beds rather than a double bed was more flexible. If we have a married couple staying there, we are all of an age where we don't mind sleeping in single beds for a few days.

yes seperate rooms, hubby is always cold, always restless. and wraps the duvet round him. I only have a light bedspread over me...

pooohbear2811 Wed 07-Aug-24 15:31:04

hubby refused to consider separate rooms on a permanent basis , though a few nights a week if my snoring is bad or I am talking in my sleep or being particularly restless, he does move through to the back bedroom.
We do have separate single beds in the same room brought about 4 yrs ago by my asthma playing up and struggling to breath so I bought an electric bed that I can sit up to help my breathing, and now my regurgitation as well.
Like others I hate using a quilt or being warm, he uses a 10.5 tog even in the Summer, I use a 4.5 in the winter.

Definitely separate rooms for us! I’m a very light sleeper and even heavy breathing disturbs me. I have to say it suits me better than DH who could sleep through a nuclear attack.

silverlining48 Wed 07-Aug-24 16:51:27

Sounds like us bazaa. I am a light sleeper dh not. When he woke his side of the bed looked like a tornado had hit and even the mattress always askew from the base.
While I sleep very tidily….hardly move at all, and since moving into the other room I sleep soooo much better. Even if I still manage to wake at an unearthly hour.

Yes separate rooms here. After years of insomnia in the peri menopause , DH snoring and both making trips to the bathroom at different times I finally moved into the spare room when I was ill with covid. And never moved back! But honestly I sleep so much better and am so much happier and not grumpy any more.We are very close, still kiss ,cuddle and laugh a lot.We do share if we're in a hotel but book twin beds .If self catering we book 2 bedrooms. But if we have family staying eg at Xmas we're back together. But tbh it's always a relief to stretch out on my own in a silent ,cool room.

I'm single but my wee dog sleeps at the bottom of my king size. I love having my own space

Susieq62 Wed 07-Aug-24 18:59:28

I snore! He tosses and turns, separate beds apart from holidays ! Love it !

SunnySusie Wed 07-Aug-24 19:16:58

Love our separate bedrooms. I am constantly hot, often restless and anything and everything disturbs me. DH is cold, shouts in his sleep and flings his arms around. Visiting each others rooms always seems a bit exciting. We usually go self catering on holiday with two bedrooms.

Tilly8 Wed 07-Aug-24 19:23:01

Separate rooms for us for the last couple of years mainly due to snoring, heavy breathing and my insomnia. Funnily enough we now find sleeping together exciting - we look forward to going away and always book a KS bed plus I do have unexpected visits in the night!! Silly I know but it works very well for us. Both in our 70s.

Greciangirl Wed 07-Aug-24 19:24:46

Yes, absolutely.
My bed - my space.
We are both comfortable with the arrangement.
The usual reasons are: snoring, bad dreams, thrashing around.
Not me. Other half, so he’s relegated to the spare room.

Childofthe60s Wed 07-Aug-24 19:46:47

I dream of winning the lottery, just so I can have a bedroom and bed of my own.

When my husband retired I carried on working for another 5 years. He would watch tv until 2 or 3am and I had to be up at 6am so he started staying downstairs all night so we didn't disturb each other. Just after I retired 10 yrs ago he went into hospital with a heart problem and once he came home he couldn't manage the steep narrow stairs so bought himself a recliner chair and I don't think he ever went upstairs again. We moved 18 months ago and despite installing a stair lift and a profiling bed he only went upstairs to sleep 2 or 3 times before he died 9 months ago.

MiniMoon Wed 07-Aug-24 22:06:29

Separate rooms for us too. We've slept apart for years. We kept very different hours while working. DH still rises three times a week at 03:30 and always woke me when he got up.
If I wake in the middle of the night I have difficulty going back to sleep. I also still suffer from hot sweats and need a cooler bed than he likes. It works well for us.

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 07-Aug-24 22:23:39

We’ve had separate rooms for years. He likes a warm room, goes to the loo endless times and snores like a train. I prefer a totally unheated room. We also have two separate rooms on holiday. But, if we have visitors, I have to give up my room and sleep in a single room.

gentleshores Thu 08-Aug-24 02:02:53

Sometimes. I had a painful knee recently so he slept in the other room. That has had to happen a few times over the last year. I don't want it to be permanent - but we've sort of got used to it.

Huia Thu 08-Aug-24 06:09:37

We have separate rooms too- just like Royalty! Much the same reasons- prostate, insomnia, snoring etc. We do get into bed together initially and have a cuddle.
Thing is I don’t usually tell people because it seems to have some stigma attached. So it was good to hear all your stories.

Katyj Thu 08-Aug-24 06:28:10

Funny I should see this thread this morning. I’ve been awake half the night re figuring our bedrooms half the night in my head.
Same problems as a lot of you, DH bladder probs plus I suspect he has reflux as he’s started coughing through the night too.
We have two small en-suite bedrooms I can just about get two single beds in our room, our king size could move next door.

Have any of you bought extra long singles my DH is tall ? Looks like I’m going to be busy.
