Separate beds

One thing that has made our marriage more comfortable in recent years is the fact that we sleep in separate bedrooms. Of course we are lucky enough to have enough bedrooms to do this. Thing is I get too hot in the night, he is too cold, I snore and get restless on my sleep, he has trouble with his prostate which means he can be up and down and he suffers from insomnia.
About 10 years ago we finally decided enough was enough and we started sleeping apart. We agree has been he best decision. He can now sit up in bed reading or listening to the radio when he can’t sleep, and I can stretch out with just a sheet over me when overheated. Have spoken to several of our friends about this and some already do it, others are so uncomfortable at night they are seriously considering it and another couple say they couldn’t ever imagine sleeping apart.
Anyone else in the separate bedroom camp?

It started as a temporary thing, when we both had colds that meant keeping each other awake with coughing and nose blowing.

But since we are both up and down a lot in the night anyway (ageing bladders!) we’re still in separate rooms. The odd night in a hotel room or staying elsewhere is fine, as long as it’s at least a king size bed.
We still have an excellent relationship.

I cannot, and will not, share an ordinary double bed any more - it feels so cramped.

King size bed for us but we don’t generally snore or wake each other up. We dread double beds in hotels as that does cause problems

DH was often abroad for work purposes which meant I had the bed to myself. It was OK for a short spell and a few years back I used to have the dog to cuddle whilst DH wasn't home. But I couldn't imagine sleeping without him in a separate room. It's been cosy and comfortable for so long

Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton went a stage further-separate houses !
It still didn't work out though , which is rather sad .

We've been in separate rooms since OH moved out to single when I was isolating 4 years ago during covid
We both realised we slept better so continued, at weekends he joins me for breakfast in bed
I do sometimes feel awkward when telling other people as they seem shocked
On holiday just usually book twin room in hotels or two bed cottages if self catering. We do usually end up poking each other complaining about the snoring but as the air conditioning is on when abroad I wear earplugs anyway

Yes definitely. I sleep so much better now that we are in separate bedrooms and have done for about 10 years.

Yes, started several years ago by stealth!

Progressing from occasional move to a different bedroom halfway through the night because of snoring to full on going to sleep in a different bedroom (but only on days I needed to get up for work) to full time separate bedrooms.

On holiday we book twin beds or kingsize (although we have plenty of bedrooms none of them are big enough for a kingsize bed or we might have tried it).

I also take a single antihistamine which despite claiming to be non drowsy always sends me to sleep! If I can get to sleep first it is less likely his snoring will disturb me.

No from me, I couldn't imagine not sleeping with my husband. What do the separate bedroom sleepers when they want sex? Knock on the door and say I'm ready if you are grin

Not quite separate rooms or single beds, but we have single quilts now. Bliss, I no longer wake up cold because dh has rolled the quilt around himself
