If this were a light hearted thread, I’d be tempted to suggest that Gransnet is beginning to feel like Midsomer Murders. Yet another poster has disappeared in mysterious circumstances.

It’s deadly serious though. Attempts to contact Urmstongran are falling on stony ground and many of us are concerned because we know how challenging her life is at the moment.

Many of us have received messages of support from Urms when life has dealt us the cruellest of blows and yet we are unable to contact her via pms.

She always let us know when she was taking a break from GN so to go on a long awaited holiday and just disappear is out of character.

I suspect foul play and I’m not taking the p**s!

I only skimmed and I thought you meant our Gransnetter, Aveline was deceased!!!

Those male insults don't pertain to a mans sexual values where I come from.
There isn't a male version, except "man whore", and doesn't that just sound wonderful?
Yet people think its acceptable to fling it around about Rayner.

That's what I was trying to say grin

Gigolo?
But that sounds rather glamorous.

There’s always “Rentboy” (don’t ask me how I know blush)

It always does. I think if Gransnet just answered the questions it wouldn’t continue but they don’t seem that bothered 🤷‍♀️

They dont much answer questions, do they?
Quite surprised about that.

This thread isnt in Site Stuff.
And it is a weekend.
Perhaps they havent read it.

I admire AR for forging ahead and getting somewhere in life, but just thought the trouser suit was awful.
I suppose that’s allowed? Am beginning to doubt it on here.
I also thought Sunak would have looked better in a not so tight suit given how thin he is, and yes it’s the fashion just as the trouser suit was, but fashion isn’t always kind to the wearer.
I further thought that Theresa May would have looked better in a longer jacket, and Boris in a well fitted suit.Nichola Sturgeon would have looked better in a lower heel and not in such eye watering neon colours.I thought I may as well go the whole hog in my thoughts on political leaders and fashion while we’re here.😄

Tarty is a (mainly working class) adjective which was often thrown about in my native Liverpol when I was younger. I dont know if this is still the case as its 40 years since I lived there. The equivalent insult for a male was to call him a "prick" which carries both sexual and social class connotations. "Oik" and "twat" were two others.

I remember that when I was young the wearing of an ankle bracelet was regarded as tarty, if not worse. times have changed. I told my niece about copper bracelets being elpful for arthritis. I have two, one for each wrist. She thought she might wear one on her ankle. She is over 40 and has no idea of the earlier meaning.

In terms of insults, an ex-neighbour called the three year old son of another ex-neighbour a guttersnipe! shock Could that be used to describe a man?

Why would that not be 'allowed'?

It is not making personal, snobbish, sexist or offensive comments, just expressing a preference for one style of fashion over another. And it's not doing the former whilst pretending you are simply doing the latter.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 14:32:47

Of course its allowed not to like something, or someone.

Vile comments, particularly uncalled for ones, however, denigrating women...

"I just wish that all of the petty reporting would stop and we, as experienced adults could be left to judge for ourselves and challenge those who are rude or downright out of order.
I’d like to see all posters return and those who have GNHQ on speed dial reprimanded." Laura Norderr

I agree, Laura.

It's Melanie Hill, ixion
She was also Aveline

And was married to the lovely Sean Bean !

Gransnet is a private limited company which is run as a business. If the business of Gransnet is efficient it will seek to keep posters posting and reading the adverts.

I guess the management assesses the mood of posters is generally more twee than liberal.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 15:01:34

I don't think its tweet to not want to run a website containing vile statements about women, by women.

There would be a furore if it was males doing it.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 15:03:33

Twee.
Not tweet. 🤡

Aveline Sun 01-Sept-24 15:04:52

Sean Bean? No thanks. I'd rather stick to Mr A.

annsixty Sun 01-Sept-24 15:09:26

I could cope with Sean Bean any day of the week.

He was beautiful as a young man, but I don't think he's aged well.

HousePlantQueen Sun 01-Sept-24 15:16:27

A few on here were beside themselves at the realisation that a working class woman had worked hard, dealt with the hand that life dealt her and managed to succeed, but expected other GN members to applaud, nay revere, them for having achieved professional status themselves when they too had got there by an unconventional and harder route. I cannot understand how hard working women who have achieved a lot will then criticise, even sneer, at other women who have done the same.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 15:19:09

Yes, I pointed out that Rayner had done better than anyone here, in terms of her career, and it was not popular.

People were saying she was thick, etc etc.

Allsorts Sun 01-Sept-24 15:20:57

I think Tarty a very easily understandable word and description of someone that is.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 15:22:37

Oh, I don't.
I think it's old fashioned and misogynystic.

kittylester Sun 01-Sept-24 15:26:02

Having skim read the thread, u have 3 random comments

I can't see there is anything wrong with commenting on being politically aware and having an opinion of a person's clothes. I am a woman, I can multitask.

It is sad that hokes go over some people's heads but that shouldn't stop us taking jokes. Maybe the person perceiving something as an insult should hold fire and try to consider whether it may have been a joke.

And, I've forgotten what my 3rd random point was.grin

Dinahmo Sun 01-Sept-24 15:27:43

HPQ Nor do I understand. There are a few who often remind us of how successful they've been and I find the constant repetition a bit boring. However, it is easy to skip over those bits.

What I do find irritating are those who venture to go on to N & P and then complain about being "showed down" by others. The N & P forum is bound to attract strong opinions and it is sometimes necessary to have a thick skin.

Those who use the remaining forums as well as N & P are usually thoughtful, kind and informative in their responses.

Finally, I would prefer if posts were not removed, unless it is at the poster's request.
