If this were a light hearted thread, I’d be tempted to suggest that Gransnet is beginning to feel like Midsomer Murders. Yet another poster has disappeared in mysterious circumstances.

It’s deadly serious though. Attempts to contact Urmstongran are falling on stony ground and many of us are concerned because we know how challenging her life is at the moment.

Many of us have received messages of support from Urms when life has dealt us the cruellest of blows and yet we are unable to contact her via pms.

She always let us know when she was taking a break from GN so to go on a long awaited holiday and just disappear is out of character.

I suspect foul play and I’m not taking the p**s!

Yeah, mountains and molehills alright, and some are like dogs with a bone over the trousersuit fiasco thread.
petra you are 100% correct there, there’s a distinction and I don’t think for one moment that anyone was banned over anything to do with that thread.

Oreo Sun 01-Sept-24 09:07:26

Why on earth is this a third thread about missing posters?🤔

Galaxy Sun 01-Sept-24 09:07:41

I am not excusing any comments on AR but I started reporting classism on here I would never ever be finished. Any discussion on Brexit is riddled with it.

Doodledog Sun 01-Sept-24 09:09:16

Indeed, annsixty. My posts have responded to comments about what was said about AR and her son, not suggesting that anyone was banned as a result of them, as we just don’t know what happened.

I, too, would be delighted to find that Calli is just having login problems. Why can’t HQ sort them out, and Urms’ too? Couldn’t they cancel their accounts so they can reregister with the same names?

The message from HQ on one of the deleted threads implied that posters were only banned after a series of warnings- maybe that explains why what may seem to some to be a trivial thing has sparked a banning? Again, we don’t know.

I do feel that at times people don’t seem to see unpleasantness that is not directed at them, particularly if the victim doesn’t make a fuss. Someone clever can hide cruel comments in an otherwise neutral post, or pass them off as ‘bluntness’ or straight talking. If enough people have separately alerted HQ to that sort of thing and warnings have been issued there wouldn’t necessarily have to be a noticeably hostile post to be the final straw. But as before, we don’t know - I speak with no knowledge of this situation, but as someone who has been admin on a discussion board. It’s not always black and white.

Why on earth is this a third thread about missing posters?🤔

Maybe because two of the missing posters are having issues with logging into GN, and GNHQ are rather slow at helping them.

If there is a specific software problem it could happen to any of us?

Galaxy Sun 01-Sept-24 09:11:21

I am pretty sure that what doodledog has described is how it works, a number of warnings and then suspension, etc. So it isnt that the last remark was particularly awful it's just it was the 'final' one.

Doodledog Sun 01-Sept-24 09:11:52

How hard can it be to reinstate someone? I assume Urms and Calli have tried using slightly different names with no joy?

Marydoll Sun 01-Sept-24 09:17:44

Someone who was previously banned informed me that HQ not only quoted the post, which prompted the ban, but had also looked back at previous reports.
As Doodledog has said, it is not always black and white.

I too would like HQ to sort things out and see our missing posters back.

One reason for not being able to log in can be the cookies in your cache. I remember previously advising a GN member to delete their browsing history and it worked
The only downside is you become logged out on all devices.

The only connection as far as I can see between our banned/suspended GN friends is that they are right of centre in terms of their politics…

Banning someone for being right of centre, unless views were racist etc, why should they be banned for their political views.

I thought GG13's post was tongue in cheek!

Do you seriously think that is what happened? Of course it was a TIC comment. This is how misinformation is spread. And disinformation, come to that.

dogsmother Sun 01-Sept-24 09:55:50

I am so glad I only dip in and out commenting occasionally therefore not really able to make judgements on many of the personalities.
I have been around for several years and find this a wonderful place to come to share and ponder. I do know who can be brutal.

Doodledog Sun 01-Sept-24 09:59:48

It was a joke.

fancythat Sun 01-Sept-24 10:04:28

There are several people, myself included, who are not good with jokes.
We just dont pick them up. And never have done. Anywhere.

There was nothing to indicate with the original post[and other posts by different posters on a range of threads] to indicate a joke.

Not having a go at GG at all.
But Doodledog, with respect, "jokes" help to add to spread of misinformation.

All politicians, male and female, have their bearing and clothes criticised, Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings, Michael Foot, Jeremy Corbyn - and that's just for starters, and of course a lot of women polticians

Still more why should someone who criticises a woman politician be banned but someone who criticises a male one not? Sauce for the goose should be sauce for the gander.

If anyone can tell me a word for a male politician (or any male person) that equates to ‘tart’, I’d be interested to hear it. I don’t mean ‘stud’ or another word that suggests prowess - I mean one that suggests prostitution or promiscuous sexual activity.

And whilst Johnson has been criticised for fathering numerous children, it was his infidelity that was mentioned but the ‘legitimacy’ of his offspring.

I don’t think anyone has ever linked a politician’s clothing to their sexual behaviour until AR, who, despite being more successful than anyone on here (AFAIK, anyway) has also suffered disparaging remarks about her social class, her accent and her lack of education.

If those remarks get anyone banned, and we don’t know that they did, it was nothing to do with geese or ganders. It was sexism mixed with classism - pure and simple.

Have you forgotten former Labour MP Tracy Brabin?

www.independent.co.uk/life-style/tracy-brabin-dress-labour-handmaids-tale-shoulder-twitter-a9324701.html

I also remember Theresa May getting a lot of sniggers about her choice of footwear and big, chunky necklaces.

Rekarie Sun 01-Sept-24 10:12:17

Late to this but I'd been wondering where Callistemon was. Tried to send a DM but it failed. I cannot believe she's been banned! She was kind and thoughtful and never ruffled feathers. In my opinion of course.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 10:14:39

She hasn't been banned.
She is having technical problems, from what has been said a few posts back.

Caleo Sun 01-Sept-24 10:15:12

Well, Cossy ,I declare you may call me any name you like but don't misquote me, or dig up my sinful past.

Callistemon has been banned, but Urmstongran has had tech difficulties.
This thread is getting like Chinese whispers.I hope Callistemon will be able to return, but she may not want to in any case. There are many other forums out there.

Some of us get to know personalities on GN and usually realise when something is TIC.
However, it does mean posts can be misinterpreted.
Just like posters saying saying Calli had been banned, because they haven't read the whole bloomin' thread.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Sept-24 10:23:03

Yes,we've had the mass migration of members to another forum before, and then they all came back. smile

Fair point. They can do, if people don't pick them up. But at the same time, unless the circumstances surrounding the comment make the joke comment plausible (in this case that GN bans right wing posters) why would someone believe them?

I realise that we are all different though, and didn't mean to be insensitive to that.
