Hello. I am new here.
I had a bit of a shock re HMRC today. I was up until much too late researching into whether I had made a horrible error. Or rather they had.... last time this happened it was their fault and I owed them £700 even though they had all the info they needed to avoid that.
I found a very useful charity online (does anyone else know of it? Called Tax Help for Older People taxvol.org.uk) who did not allay my fears when I rang them.
It seems that I have fallen into the trap of not paying money to HMRC when my savings interest went a bit over the limit of what we are allowed for free. Everywhere I read it said that the banks will report it, and HMRC will just change your tax code to pay it off. As if by magic, I thought, given that none of my statements said anything on this subject, which should have rung alarm bells.
It seems that there is no magic, and HMRC make mistakes. I am likely 'under their radar' I was told. So I now likely owe them a couple of years of tax to pay on it and another coming up. Hey ho, a phone call to confess is coming up on Tues at 8 a.m. when I am told it's the best time to ring (not Monday for sure apparently).
I hope the tea and cake here will give me some comfort. Or is it SOOP? I presume this kitchen serves something like this up as well as kindness?
