Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub. Anyone remember these little firemen from Trumpton? For some reason I started thinking about them this morning and remember sitting to watch Trumpton, Camberwick Green and, I think the other one was Chigley, over the years with grandchildren. They were such lovely stories, personally think they were nicer than those they have these days.

Oh yes. Bizzy Lizzy! My mum made me a corduroy pinafore with a flower on the pocket like Bizzy Lizzy. Happy memories. I loved Windy Miller. The music when he walks out of the windmill is in my head now …. And I loved Tales from the Riverbank. Although putting little hamsters into jackets and sticking them in a toy plane doesn’t seem so nice now 😜

Does anyone remember Crow and Alice I know Crow was a crow but cannot for the life of me remember what Alice was.

I used to watch all the Watch with Mother programmes (I suppose it would have to be called ‘Watch with a Parent or Guardian’ nowadays!🙄). I loved them all, but I must admit that Postman Pat is one of my favourites (watched by our children in the 80s) and, more recently, Hey Duggy, watched by our grandchildren.
‘In the Night Garden’ is just weird, almost as weird as ‘The Magic Roundabout’! I’m sure the writers were on something.🤣

From my childhood, "Listen with Mother" always at quarter to two. My mum told me that my brother, when he started school, used to put his head down on his desk in the afternoon and have a nap as he was so used to listening to it at that time!
I still remember two of the stories from it - "The Snail who Went to China" and "The Rabbit who had Too Many Cabbages." My other favourite was Picture Book on Watch with Mother. I made macaroni necklaces painted with water colour paints and also Chinese Lanterns (the paper ones with slits in them, not the balloon ones), which I made many years later with my children and grandchildren.

From my children's childhood Play School and Rainbow. They loved George the Hippo!

My older GC loved Toby's Travelling Circus, and my youngest GD now love Hey Duggy and Bluey.

Oh yes TiggyW, forgot about In the Night Garden! Older and youngest GC loved that, it was/is part of their nightime ritual although it does go on a bit too long for me!

Just as an aside my DH, when doing our family history over the last 40-odd years, discovered that I am related to Oliver Postgate!

how funny. On another thread regarding D Trump buying a Tetra car , I suggested that he must be travelling to Trumpton in it and maybe he will meet Noddy in his little car too. ! Oh how I wish that DT was about the size of these puppets and then either the strings could be cut or one of the big giants could just tread on the pest\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\11

I loved the Woodentops especially Spotty Dog. My Mum said my big brother and I used to cry at the end of the programme and she had to console us. On the very odd occasion I watch TV with my toddler grand daughter I find it to loud and fast moving apart from Bluey which is rather sweet.

Strangely only today I foud myself thinking about Chrystal Tips and Alistair (not sure of spelling). This was a Watch with Mother programme and my late DD one day was so upset when I couldn't understand what she meant when saying TissueAla. It was the next time the programme was on when she got excited and shouted TissueAla that I knew what she had been meaning. Sad and happy memory.

One of my DD loved Crystal Tipps and Alistair - I'd completely forgotten them!

Does anyone remember Bod? DS liked Bod.
I did wonder if our dear Gransnetter, Auntieflo, picked her name from Bod's Aunt Flo, who was sometimes in a baking mood. 🙂

Rhubarb and Custard! Beautifully spoken by Richard Briers, I think.

Loved Bod. The music immediately sprang to mind when I read your post Allira

Sara and Hoppity always freaked me out

The biggest spotty dog you ever did see.

Janal1 Wed 12-Mar-25 22:21:17

Yes, I remember all these programmes, watched them with children and grandchildren.

NotSpaghetti Wed 12-Mar-25 22:21:42

We didn't have a TV when (most of) our children were small.
When we did get one we rarely watched it. I have no memories of watching children's TV with any of mine.

I used to pick DS up from the school nursery, then we'd have lunch and settle down to watch Mr Ben followed by The Sullivans. He usually had a quick nap, snuggled up with me, while the Sullivans was on. 🙂
Happy days.

My children loved the Herbs: Lady Rosemary, Sir Basil,, Parsley the lion, Sage the owl annd all the little chives! Any one remember any other characters? Rhubarb and Custard, loved the music we all danced to it.

My early child hood was without TV but oh I loved Children’s hour on the radio. The lovely dramas. I used to ger so excited when The Box of Delights was broadcast, at Christmas time. Not every year but always with the same music, The Jewels of the Madonna’

Thanks #Allira for reminding me of this lunchtime ritual. I did exactly the same with my son and he would always say

"Is it time for the Suvillans now?".

From then on they were always The Suvillans in our house.

Greyduster Thu 13-Mar-25 06:49:53

It always tickled me that they got Derek Jacobi to do the voiceover for In The Night Garden - I think he said he did it for his young nephews and nieces!

Ivor the engine was a favourite. Plus others people have mentioned. Anyone remember Belle and Sebastian about a girl and a large dog? There was a creepy children's programme which had a singing tree but can't remember what it was called think it was French dubbed into English. Magic roundabout came on before the news .

I liked the puppet and animation versions of things . Lot is now cartoon . Seeing some of the programmes my grandsons watch aren't as innocent as programmes where when I was young or my children. They are more violent think it's paw patrol where there is a battle against the man with the freaky cats . Also the one where the animal children are larger than the adults looking after them and the one animal child takes his shorts off in the playground and runs around in his pants . Can't remember what it's called .

What happened to Barnacle Bill and what was the Muppet one I think it had a lighthouse . Oh my memory wish I could remember name of things . 🤦🤦🤦🤦

Luckygirl3 Thu 13-Mar-25 07:11:03

What I love about these ol children's programmes is that they were not frenetic as they are now. They assumed that a child could become absorbed in a gentle tale.
I do think very that little ones being bombarded with fast-moving garish images and loud sound has an impact on their developing brains. Maybe connected with subsequent ADHD?

NanaJaaJaa Thu 13-Mar-25 11:38:33

I used to love all those and especially Andy Pandy. There was Pinky and Perky and the Flowerpot Men. They definitely don't make them like they used to. I can still remember sitting down with my nana to watch "Watch with Mother"

Athrawes Thu 13-Mar-25 11:47:18
