I went to lunch with some friends the other day , I was driving so I had a Zero alcohol drink, don't know why I bothered I would have enjoyed my usual sort drink just as much. 3 of the others were having alcohol , two shared a bottle of wine and then had large G&T's the other had 2 bottles of beer.
I have never been able to drink alcohol on a lunch time, more than a glass sends me sleep for the afternoon especially if it is warm weather.
I will have a glass of wine at home on a Saturday but always with food.

Was there a question 62Granny?

Perhaps 62Granny was concerned if her friends were driving as she was being absolutely sensible, or feeling frustrated watching them enjoying their tipples. Whichever it was she was just having a little vent on this hot day, and who can blame her, incidentally I’m sticking to a nice cup of tea 😊

I have this problem too. I have started to hold back on meeting up at lunchtime as my friends drink a lot. Luckily we do have public transport. I just feel it ruins my day if I have more than a glass of wine, whereas enjoying the one is a real treat, having more makes me feel unwell. I just don't enjoy it anymore.

I'm glad it isn't just me...

Sorry I was interrupted and pressed post to early I meant to ask do others drink in the afternoon or are you like me and would be sleeping at the table.

No not venting just curious , it honestly doesn't bother me anymore.

Only on holiday and when I’m cooking a Sunday roast.

I wouldn’t fall asleep if i had a couple of glasses of wine with lunch out. If I am driving I woukd have one medium glass of wine while eating. Half a bottle of wine Woukd be more than enough fir me and with a large g and t on top seems a lot to me.
I never fall asleep during the day ( wish I could) whether I have a glass of something or not. It’s hard enough to get to sleep at night.

Was there a question 62Granny?

😂 I was wondering.

I sometimes still enjoy on a hot afternoon a very long gin and tonic at home and I find it very refreshing. By "very long" I mean an entire bottle of tonic.
Wine in the heat 🍷🍷🍷knocks me out.

There are a lot of excellent alcohol free alternatives around now, my family tell me.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 19-Jun-25 19:59:18

I do not have any alcohol if I am driving, regardless of the time of day.

Only drink at lunchtime if it is a celebration or a couple if on holiday 🥂

Allira Thu 19-Jun-25 20:10:30

Elderflower pressé if out to lunch.

Jaxjacky Thu 19-Jun-25 21:12:58

Pint of lime and soda for me, not too much ice, driving or not,.
It has to be very special daytime event for me to have alcohol, even then, say for a toast, I’d have a mouthful, or a half of weak shandy.
I don’t mind what others do, unless I’m responsible for them.

I'm on holiday at the moment and it's very hot. At lunch I have a small glass of French rosé with ice cubes in it. Easy to drink without being very intoxicating. I don't drink otherwise except sometimes a glass of wine at weekends.

Grantanow Thu 19-Jun-25 22:07:41

One glass of wine at lunchtime is my limit.

silverlining48 Thu 19-Jun-25 22:09:08

Elderflower and sparkling water make a lovely cool long drink.

tanith Thu 19-Jun-25 22:20:49

Water or tea is my tipple on a hot day.

JenniferEccles Thu 19-Jun-25 22:34:51

Me too tanith
Alcohol is dehydrating so not a good option for this current weather!
I guess though for those who like it, one glass would be ok, especially if water is consumed too.

Shelflife Thu 19-Jun-25 22:54:45

I never drink alcohol if am going to be behind the wheel. Lunch time alcohol is a big no no for me driving of not! Especially in this very hot weather . As I type now I am sitting outside in the fading light , have candles burning and
have just finished a late meal and now coming to the end of a glass of red wine.
It is so still and quiet , perfect !
I would love my DH to enjoy this with me, sadly his Alzheimers has changed our lives. While not in an advanced stage it still has a profound effect on both of us. He is inside watching the news - again!!!!!!
However I am enjoying this evening and our lovely cat has just leapt onto my lap.
I am feeling at peace now but also a little sad. Looking forward to another sunny day tomorrow.

Taichinan Thu 19-Jun-25 23:25:51

Ooh a lovely long G&T for me with lots of ice! (But definitely not if I'm driving of course). Funnily enough that wouldn't make me sleepy, and yet I'm one of those people who falls asleep

Taichinan Thu 19-Jun-25 23:27:24

Sorry, pressed send too soon. I fall asleep in the afternoon the moment my bum feels a chair beneath it.

shelflife I can empathise with your feelings of sadness regarding your husbands inability to join you on this lovely summer evening as my partner is developing symptoms of dementia too though undiagnosed as he refuses to see a doctor.

But I recognise the symptoms having lived through my late mum and now my older sister with the disease.
I would enjoy a few drinks -(with the right company) preferably in the evening but have developed something of an aversion due to observing the immediate negative change in mood and personality that occurs when my partner drinks just a couple of cans of beer.
I never ever join in though.

And one other thing you mentioned Shelflife is the constant watching of the news. My partner does this all day and anything about Donald b!**dy Trump on YouTube and not remembering watching the same item earlier on that day. What is that all about I wonder, watching things about someone he detests over and over and ranting at the TV! Then goes to bed early. It is more exhausting than work 🫨

Just to add that a glass of wine with lunch when out with friends is not the same as drinking in the afternoon

grandMattie Fri 20-Jun-25 04:59:17

Although I’m certainly not a prude and enjoy a drink, I never drink in the afternoon, (or just have a glass of wine with lunch) whether I’m driving or not. It doesn’t spoil my lunch.
If others want to be irresponsible, there is nothing I can do about it, and it’s not my problem…
