The US president said that a ā€œhorrible invasionā€ was taking place, adding it had to ā€œstopā€, shortly after touching down on Air Force One at Glasgow Airport.

ā€œAsked about illegal migration to Britain, Mr Trump said: ā€œOn immigration you better get your act together or you’re not going to have Europe anymore.ā€
He continued: ā€œYou’ve got to stop this horrible invasion that is happening to Europe, many countries in Europe.ā€
ā€œSome leaders have not let it happen, and they’re not getting the proper credit... I could name them to you right now, but I’m not going to embarrass the other ones. But stop, this immigration is killing Europe.ā€
Mr Trump, who has made border control a key priority of his presidency, said: ā€œLast month we had nobody entering our country.ā€

Well done Trump. He’s not wrong! šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§

Until such time they claim asylum, they are illegal/irregular entrants, not my words, but the legal definition.

Correct, but most claim asylum and are given an initial screening very soon after they arrive, at which point they become legal asylum seekers.

People who claim that those housed in hotels (or anywhere else) are illegal are wrong.

Those houses by the Government are being processed.

I doubt very much that the growing number of young men, living in tents under bypasses or woods have presented to HO officials, happy to be corrected.

There is an underbelly industry exploiting those here illegally, this needs to be a priority for the powers that bit.

The occasional raid on a takeaway, are really shop, nail parlour or car wash is ok at the time, but a few weeks later they are open again with new workers

I have no idea. I've no experience of people living under bypasses or in woods, so have never asked them.

If restaurants/car washes/nail bars are the main problem, maybe the protesters are directing their anger at the wrong people.

There is little, if any comparison with the Ugandan Asians and undocumented men arriving on small boats. Many of the Asians thrown out of Uganda had British passports. One of the reasons Idi Amin loathed that group was because they were successful professionals and business people. One of my closest friends, of Goan Indian heritage, arrived here aged four from Uganda, with both her parents and four siblings. Father quickly in suitable employment, all five children went to university, two pharmacists, a teacher, a doctor, a probation officer.
That’s a familiar story, can be repeated by many asylum seekers. It takes initiative and resilience to uproot and build a new life in a foreign country.
I’m sympathetic but I’m persuaded something has to be done to stop the numbers arriving and being given basic needs. All the solutions I know of involve international cooperation and long term plans. I understand the govt announced today the use of hotels will end by 2029

Trump is with Starmer right now.
The USA has a leader, the UK has a lawyer.
Sorry to be blunt but it’s my opinion.

Allira Mon 28-Jul-25 14:06:18

Yes, we have to try not to get everything out of proportion, for example citing the Ugandan Asians as if they were illegal immigrants arriving on small boats without documentation!

The ones we know (and I include one of our best friends in that) arrived with documents and many had British passports too. They've all integrated and made a success of life here.

Maremia Mon 28-Jul-25 14:11:59

The USA has a leader who in his own country has been convicted of breaking the law.
Not my opinion. It's a fact.

Iam64 Mon 28-Jul-25 14:13:24

Allira, my experience is that our cultures were similar. My close friends family were of Goan Indian heritage. Goa was a Portuguese protectorate and remains very Catholic region. I spent time there four years ago. Most schools were faith based, the majority Catholic.
My friends family settled in Leicester happily. Education for their daughters seen as important as for sons.

Iam64 Mon 28-Jul-25 14:15:04

Starmer is an excellent lawyer that’s for sure. He’s managed to lead the Labour Party without the usual revolts until recently. I wish he’d show more dynamic approach

Allira Mon 28-Jul-25 14:16:53

Under canal bridges too.

If restaurants/car washes/nail bars are the main problem, maybe the protesters are directing their anger at the wrong people.
So who would be the right people? Those who run these outfits? Yes, if they can catch them. They are immigrants in some cases too.

The illegal immigrants are often treated by slaves but firms unwittingly employ them because they have forged documents. Sainsburys was one such firm, employing cleaners controlled by an OCG.

I'm sure you cannot be unaware, growstuff, you are very astute and clued up!

One of my colleagues very many years ago was Indian, as he was Catholic perhaps he was from Goa too. I hadn't realised that was because it had been Portuguese, although, of course, Portugal had a huge Empire and that's why Portuguese is the most widely spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere.

I digress!

Iam64 Mon 28-Jul-25 14:53:15

Maybe digressing helps us think about immigration in a less polarised way

Iam64 Mon 28-Jul-25 14:54:21

FGT listening to Trump and Starmer now. Starmer doing well on our behalf. Diplomacy plus

eazybee Mon 28-Jul-25 14:55:28

I am beginning to doubt whether Starmer was ever an excellent lawyer; he certainly shows no sign of now. No instant grasp of a situation, no clever repartee, no ability to confound his opponents, or even an intelligent reporter. As for a Leader; the Labour Party is in disarray, internal dissensions after thirteen months.
Watching him toadying up to Trump this afternoon is sickening; no wonder his wife looked so miserable when she arrived.

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 28-Jul-25 15:35:19

The USA's leader is a convicted felon, who thinks that he can reduce prices by 1200%, and recently posted on his social media thread two video clips- one of a woman wrestling with a snake, one of a man doing roly- polys down a flight of steps.
Spare us such a leader, please.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 28-Jul-25 15:41:31

Hmm. I wonder if Trump and Vance are on a mission to save us by holidaying here.

Trump lies all the time- of course people entered his country last month- what's he talking about?

Of course if they're not going there's a good reasons- the USA is finished with this ridiculous person in charge... and people believe what he says?

Casdon Mon 28-Jul-25 16:02:58

If ever a President talked out of his ass. The more I hear of his burbling (with the actual knowledge of a gnat), the more I think how glad I am not to be a US citizen. Just imagine his reaction if any other world leader went to his country and tried to tell him what to do. Starmer, just grit your teeth and thank goodness he’s off to face the music back home tomorrow.

We’ve got to toady up to Trump. We need all the new trade deals that Brexit promised. As for the Labour Party being in disarray: we’ve always been like that because the party isn’t full of yes people terrified of the whip the way the Conservatives party is.

I seriously have never seen people living under bypasses or in woods, so I don't know. Not all homeless people are immigrants.

Whether we agree or not he could be right in some instances.

Starmer looked out of his depth and his wife ill at ease.
They don't do politics like Trump who works with a series of soundbites to match the Instagram age.
But his policies have cut USA Illegal immigration - down to 0 last week, we are told by independent watchers. Some things are going right for him.

woodenspoon Mon 28-Jul-25 17:36:55

The Americans voted for Trump. They like him. Sure some didn’t they’d prefer Biden. But plenty voted for Trump. Americans do things differently than here where it’s all wishywashy and fear of offending minorities. Trump May be offensive to some on Gransnet but not to all in the wider scheme of things.

I think many on these forums won’t be happy until the UK becomes an Islamic Middle Eastern enclave. Be careful what you wish for.

No other country puts migrants up in hotels, all expenses paid, allows them bank cards, lets them commit crimes without fear of deportation, allows Taliban into the country amongst the Afghan airlift ( Daily Telegraph), our own soldiers living on the street while the Afghans are housed. Also just read 85 Sharia courts in the UK. Still, according to some gransnetters those who think this is disgusting, of which I am one, is a racist. Well so be it.

Casdon Mon 28-Jul-25 17:37:07

I think p….d off describes it more accurately. It must be very trying indeed to have to be positive whilst dealing with an egotistical fool telling you how to run your country. The nearest analogy was Macron, whose patience looked equally tested.

Allira Mon 28-Jul-25 17:38:05

Perhaps Starmer had trouble extrapolating exactly what Trump meant from the drivel that emanates from his mouth?
