To lighten the gloom of impending winter and the depressing world news, I am inviting GNs to share stories and pictures of the animals who share and enrich their lives.

I was at a house party once and the host told me that their cat had learned to use the loo. I was intrigued so when the host called me upstairs to witness the cat using the loo I dashed up but I was too late as the cat had finished and I just saw her jumping down. There was, however, solid proof that the cat had indeed used to loo.

I expressed my surprise and admiration and the host shrugged it off and said "The cat never thinks to flush when she's finished."

Nothing so clever here, but dds did teach our dog to respond to, ‘May I shake the Royal Paw?’ - by offering her paw, obviously.

Otherwise she wasn’t the brightest - once went and hid behind the sofa when DD’s friend brought his house bunny to visit! A bit of a scaredy-dog she was, RIP ❤️🐶

My ginger cat Fergus is another thief. Among his haul was a packed lunch in a plastic bag where he had taken a bite out of the apple; a frozen roast lamb ready-meal from the local Co-op, socks and knickers galore. We lived close to a primary school, so he collected crayons, pencils, erasers, children's drawings and a huge fan club. He sat on the garden wall at the times when children were coming and going where he collected pats and strokes. Several times teachers knocked on the door bringing him back as he was "disruptive in class"

When my children were small we had a cat who would follow us to the end of the road when I walked them to school every day. She would sit on the wall and wait till I came back, then follow me the rest of the way home. She never once crossed the road to follow me any further.
She also turned up one Sunday afternoon with a piece of roast beef about 2 inches thick and 4 inches across. My guess is a neighbour must have left it to cool after their meal. I was too embarassed to ask any neighbour of they had misplaced one.
The same cat would cry at the back door to be let in, and if I didn't get there quick enough she would jump and hang by her claws to the edge of the glass panel, so I could see her face meowing. If that didn't work she would hang there then knock her chin on the handle and the door would slowing swing open with her still attached. She was quite a character!

I couldn’t help but be reminded of my DGD’s favourite book when she was smaller, ‘Slinky Malinki’ by Lynley Dodd.
Do check it out Lettice.

My DD has just realised that her pretty little grey tabby rescue cat Daisy is a thug. Over the past few days Daisy has seen off a large tabby, a hairy ginger and a sweet little tuxedo cat.

Daisy was so shy when DD first got her but she is making up for it now.

We have a couple of magpies living in our garden and one of our cats is absolutely terrified of them. They swoop her at any opportunity. They never bother with the other cat ( she isn’t a huntress), only with the one who tries to catch anything that moves. Clever birds, maggies.
