William & Kate Scheduled to Visit USA for....

....the 250th anniversary of America's Independence.

Should they re-think this, in view of Trump's out-of-control behaviour?

The original colonists didn't want a king but, several generations on, that is exactly what America now has in the person of Donald Trump.

If the Prince and Princess of Wales attend the anniversary celebration then Trump will interpret the visit as a ringing endorsement of his invasion of Venezuela surely?

He's unbalanced enough to make political capital out of the Royals, given the chance.

How safe would they be?

Smileless2012 Sun 04-Jan-26 08:20:56

I'm sure they'll be well protected, and is this visit any more of an endorsement of Trump's invasion of Venezuela than Starmer's mealy mouthed response?

Allsorts Sun 04-Jan-26 08:22:34

He will interpret their visit as being sympathetic with what he does.

Trump isn't a King, he is a Dictator.

Even medieval Kings, after John, had to listen to Parliament because they were responsible for raising taxes.

I think if I were Kate I'd be unwell. I think it depends how Starmer reacts. He needs to condemn acts of illegality and I think he will.

Smileless2012 Sun 04-Jan-26 08:33:58

When will he foxie?

BlueBelle Sun 04-Jan-26 08:37:25

Madness and why !!!

SillyOma Sun 04-Jan-26 08:48:39

I think they are trying to repair the relationship the US has with UK. Trump has no time for Starmer and it shows. Not sure it will make any difference. Starmer is not a leader.

Don't know, he never tells me anything I just have to wait along with everyone else.

I imagine no time for each other is mutual, but Trump has no filter, so he is unable to maintain a diplomatic front in any situation. However Starmer would be a fool to leap in until he has consulted with other NATO allies. What is needed here is international condemnation, not a UK maverick response.

William and Catherine should certainly not go to America. Trump has shown Europe that he's not interested in supporting it. He's burned his bridges. Let him live with that - but not for long.

Wyllow3 Sun 04-Jan-26 09:54:25

I agree they shouldn't go, but if it is tactically unavoidable, very very strict T's and C's about what they take part in and to dtrtuen before due time if these are not respected.

Total refusal may bring reprisals as in tariffs or other punitive measures - yes Trump is that childish he wouldn't hesitate, he'd take it totally personally.

Wyllow3 Sun 04-Jan-26 09:54:46

correct, "to return before due time"

Sarnia Sun 04-Jan-26 09:57:18

Trump loves being in the reflected spotlight of royalty. I think they will go, for diplomacy if nothing else.

I thought the plan was for the King and Queen to attend the anniversary celebrations and the Duke of Cornwall, (as we know him) to go to the World Cup.

MartavTaurus Sun 04-Jan-26 10:05:37

The World Cup is on at the same time, so William could kill two birds with one stone. ⚽️ 🏆

And even visit his brother and family!

The anniversary celebration would then pale into insignificance.

"The original colonists didn't want a king but, several generations on, that is exactly what America now has in the person of Donald Trump."

Don't be silly. Trump may be unbalanced as you say, but that doesn't make the US republic and constitution unbalanced. There's no way he'd get away with monarchistic nonsense.

M0nica Sun 04-Jan-26 11:49:52

The visit should be called off.

Domald Trump has taken Putin as his example and has occupied and taken over the land of another sovereign state.

The Royal Family as vectors for the British government should, immediately, without lame excuses pull out of the visits. If not they might as well make State Visits to Russia, North Korea and Israel.

Grantanow Sun 04-Jan-26 11:53:05

The world is as it is and the UK government has to deal with its many complexities. Simple-minded approaches won't do.

Baggs Sun 04-Jan-26 13:27:34

Well said, Grantanow.

Wyllow3 Sun 04-Jan-26 13:33:20

Yes. We might not like it, but we do have to keep diplomatic relationships with the USA and on the whole the monarchy have done a good job for us.

Behind the scenes stuff will be going on, as limits on what the US can expect of them will be necessary.

Norah Sun 04-Jan-26 14:28:48

Allsorts

He will interpret their visit as being sympathetic with what he does.

That would seem in line with his thoughts.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 04-Jan-26 14:34:32

The Royal Family are excellent when it comes to soft power

The current POTUS will not be in power for ever, the visit should go ahead.

Whether we like it or not the USA is a major trading partner and Europe/UK needs to keep the relationship going.
